Performances of the night for me go to:

Amanda and Giovanni- Everything was just beautiful. Love her dress too.

Nigel and Katya- I wasn't expecting him to be that good, and was worried for him getting a Paso in week 1. Beautiful lines and shaping with the arms. Did I say the arms?

Ellie and Vito - Energetic, quick,snappy and clean movements. I didn't expect that at all.

Layton and Nikita - I was fully expecting him to be annoying and diva-ish, but he does come across well. The performance itself was very good as would be expected. I have a feeling however, that if he did make a mistake or missed something, he would be able to hide it and style it out without us knowing, because he is a trained dancer. Still, I loved watching Nikita really let loose, and hope for his sake, make it to the final.

I also like Angela R, KGM, Eddie and Annabel.

I thought Zara was going to be good, but her performance was lifeless. Probably nerves. Ditto Nikita and Gorka. She barely moved in the first 10 seconds.

Les or Nikita for first elimination.

There's a Monkseal photoshopped photo of (I think) Kristina looking up adoringly at (I think) Jason Donovan with his head replaced by the glitterball, and that's very much the energy I'm getting from Katya and I am absolutely here for it.

What Nigel has that Will didn't, is Katya.
But it's very early days yet. Ellie might catch the public imagination. Bobby has probably already won the hearts of a million nans, little girls and women of a certain age who are feeling motherly and resisting Nigel's more obvious appeal (I will never vote for him because I think that sort of choreography should be dissuaded as strongly as possible). Even Layton might conceiveably overcome the ringer factor and get the votes - not being obviously better than everyone else from day 1 will have helped him here. Angela S is still well worth a tenner each way.

I can't see Amanda or Angela R making it to the final though.

Yes Katya has had the middle aged wooden sports personalities for a while.

I was hoping Karen got someone good this year. Didn't see her dance but she was middle board? Should have gone with Bobby, but i think they paired him with Dianne as she has a more youthful energy about her, so looks a more balanced pairing maybe. I could see they struggled with the height difference though.

Not her fault that Adam's gf at the time/mother of his child and the tabloids all made a fuss of the staged pause in their AT or that Nicola caught Covid.

My DS (who objects strongly to the re-writing of Strictly history) was outraged by the “first same sex couple” journey story around John and Johannes, and kept shouting “What about Katya and Nicola?!” at the Telly that year.

He was the same the year that Anton was with the actress who did that Charleston and claimed he’d never had a good partner before. Son kept shouting “what about X?” at the telly. Can’t remember her name but she was slightly posh and had some sort of classical music job….Katie Denham maybe?

As Sequins correctly surmised, I found the cutesy nature of Dianne's foxtrot choreography completely repellent. A bit of sugar in ballroom is occasionally acceptable but this was like one of those 3,000 calorie freak shakes. In the immortal words of Sophie Ellis Bextor, she's 34. And Bobby is 20 IIRC, not 12.
