I didn't realise Annabel's husband passed recently. I normally hate crying contestants, but will have to forgive her. I expect everything will remind her of him.

SoIinvictus · 19/09/2023 10:53

I think Annabel will be very reluctant to bring her husband into things.

I get the impression she's going to be very dignified and classy. Unlike others who always strike me as going into it with a "what dead relly can I wheel out today".

I can't see what was written in the Layton response but if he's already snarking at his detractors it's going to go very Jade (last year) very quickly.

Lentilweaver · 19/09/2023 10:58

Yes, Annabel strikes me as very classy, in the brief glimpse we had. Johannes in his element is a wonderful dancer; I hope they partner well.

BaconAndAvocado · 19/09/2023 11:19

Yes, I second the idea that Layton will be a fragile soul.

What happened with JADE last year?!?!

CaveMum · 19/09/2023 11:31

I worry that Layton will go one of two ways - cocksure and annoy the hell out of everyone with over the top "look at me" routines/costumes, or take any criticism/lack of popularity with the voting public to heart and end up in a Will Young-type situation.

Hopefully he has a good team behind him, but if he's already replying to comments on social media something tells me he's more at risk of the latter.

TheShellBeach · 19/09/2023 11:58

I can actually see Layton flouncing off the set if he gets any negative feedback.
The BBC will regret having him on.

twilightcafe · 19/09/2023 13:05

Layton is an incredibly talented dancer/performer - and he will overshadow Nikita completely.
We saw Layton in Hairspray a few years ago. He was in a supporting role, but every time he was onstage, your eye went to Layton rather than the lead actress.

Twonewcats · 19/09/2023 13:17

Layton twitter feed is all this kind of thing - "I'm not everyone's cup of tea", followed by lots of people reassuring him.
This is where the camp performing becomes irritating for me. Being camp and gay and out is completely up to them, but it often becomes their defining characteristic. As a pp said, it's 2023 - it's not the big deal LW is trying to make it.

Was he seaweed?

He will be good but I don't think the public will take to him

belgiumchocolates · 19/09/2023 14:22

There is a lot of talk about Layton's 'previous' dance experience but it is actually current dance experience and his full time job😂. I wouldn't mind so much as I like to see a mixture of contestants, but Layton is being very defensive in his SM posts and he does not come across as likeable. Is he going to keep biting back on SM for the whole series ? It will be the end of him for sure

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 19/09/2023 14:42

Agree about Annabel Croft, she’s about as dignified and classy as it gets; the way she managed her Wimbledon appearances last summer, only weeks after her husband died, was awe inspiring. I hope she does well. She’ll have to be a pretty terrible dancer for me not to throw her a few votes anyway.

CaveMum · 19/09/2023 14:58

Right now 2 of my three votes belong to Annabell and Amanda and I'll reserve judgement on the 3rd until after they've all danced.

EsmaCannonball · 19/09/2023 15:21

Yes, the problem is Layton is a current professional dancer, not someone who was professional decades ago, such as Debbie McGee, or someone who is dance-trained but hasn't been using it regularly in their day-job in the years prior to Strictly, e.g. Caroline, Danny or Jay. I sometimes like the ringers (aforesaid Danny, Jay and Debbie are some of my all-time favourites), I may warm to Layton (I'm often surprised by whom I end up liking, and vice versa), but it does feel as if the producers wanted to sign him up at all costs, to hell with the fairness of it. I just hate it when someone who is never going to lose a dance-off is also unpopular with the viewers and boringly knocks people with more of a story in them out of the competition.

ilovebrie8 · 19/09/2023 15:33

Time will tell re Layton there’s no getting away from it he’s a fully fledged dancer already. He may even outshine Nikita ! Looking forward to seeing the dances

belgiumchocolates · 19/09/2023 16:34

Layton might grow on me a well @EsmaCannonball lets see what happens. I am curious to see what his dances with Nikita will be like. Nikita seems to be a very popular pro so that might have some bearing on the votes. Layton could help himself by being less diva but early indications are are he won't be to control himself 😂

I have 5 I want to back, the 2 best dancers wont get my vote as I'll rely on the public vote.

I'm starting with a clean slate re Layton, never heard of him until I watched the launch show, so have no opinion (bar utter astonishment that they've put an actual, working dancer in as a celeb).

I think how he works/gets on with Nikita will have a lot to do with whether the public warm to him or not. Nikita's proving to be a very popular pro, deservedly so after how he worked with Ellie last series. If Layton's seen to be giving Nikita a hard time and being a general pain in the arse, it won't go down well... but then I guess, as others have said, he'll be saved by the judges anyway. It's going to be interesting.

bizzey · 19/09/2023 17:51

I just remember Layton from Benidorm !

Might need to re watch a few episodes!!

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/09/2023 18:09

I'm assume his "I don't" means he doesn't have ballroom or Latin experience specifically - which he may do.
Nikita would have been better to say he was going to have slap his flourishes out of him rather than adding Laytonisms. I am rooting for Annabelle and Krishnan but I find Layton dazzling so am looking forward to see what he can turn out.

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/09/2023 18:10

may not do

Agreed. This was what I loved about John and Johannes - John didn’t make his sexuality his defining feature but was much more chameleon-like in the dances - femininity, masculinity, and everything in between. Layton just seems to have fallen for the old ‘heels and lipstick’ cliche which makes him much less interesting to me as a result.

This reminds me of Jayde last year. Everything became about her weight and her brave fight for body positivity, with very little actual dancing. I am not keen on the dancer's personality outshining the dancing.

I enjoyed John and Johannes. No talk about John being a gay man on a journey blah blah, just good dancing.

Lottapianos · 20/09/2023 08:38

'I enjoyed John and Johannes. No talk about John being a gay man on a journey blah blah, just good dancing.'

Absolutely. Gorgeous man, fabulous pairing, lovely dancer although I did feel that he peaked after a few weeks and didn't really progress after that. Their Blue Monday tango is one of my favourite Strictly dances ever

Couldn't agree more about Jayde. I was rooting for her at the start because I loved her in 'Alma's Not Normal', but it turned out she had a less than winning personality (especially on Twitter) and was a fairly rubbish dancer

SoIinvictus · 20/09/2023 08:44

Agree with @Lottapianos and @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross

That's perfectly put.

I still watch John and Johannes" Paso to Pirates of the Caribbean. Brilliant.

Ooh, forgot about that one! And their baking themed Charleston. Off I go down the YouTube rabbit hole 😁
