Obvious baker to leave but quite sad for him, he seems like a nice fella!

petalpower · 03/10/2023 21:33

Poor Keith had a bit of a shocker tonight.

In order to make the same hour's worth of content as when it was on BBC they need to pad it out with all these ad breaks. Does get boring.

I think it goes down to 1hr 15 at some point once there are fewer contestants, and there are less adverts. They are milking it for every pound of advertising revenue they can get at this point.

Ceci03 · 03/10/2023 22:55

Can't get into this series at all. Wish I could but just find them all a bit boring or maybe I'm just bored with the format. Hardly any of them have any make up on. Would they not get some makeup on to be on tv. Feel like they just want a lot of them to look very homely. Or something.

Ceci03 · 03/10/2023 23:00

Why do they have to wear the same clothes for both days. Makes it even more boring!

I just want to go round som of them and pull all the bloody hair back that's hanging over eyes, brows and faces.
Yuck.

Yes I was thinking that. I wonder what Paul or Prue would think if they came across a nice long hair in the cake/biscuit they were about to put in their mouths. 🌹

Don't even remember Josh from last week

Nor do I !!

ThePlantKiller · 04/10/2023 07:09

Agree this series does have a better feel to it. I think Scottish granny is on borrowed time here. Saku is quite fun, her mannerisms at times are amusing!

LadyBird1973 · 04/10/2023 07:22

I usually record bake off and watch it the next morning and fast forward through the ads.
Am enjoying this year - I like the return to more normal bakes, like custard creams and the chocolate cake.
All the contestants are so nice - it's a shame any of them have to go.
I think what's missing is the cringe factor of watching Paul flirt with his favourite

Were you hoping for more of a Love Island vibe?

jay55 · 04/10/2023 08:46

Had to watch on catchup due to the gymnastics.
Why couldn't they say tea cakes? Are the M&S ones not called tea cakes too? Not just tunnocks...

Anyway loved that I knew what the bakes were and should look like. Was relieved the stolen dough drama was solved and no big deal.

I think a few bakers benefitted from Keith's shocker and didn't get scrutinised as much as they might have another week. I still can't put names to faces or bakes for most of them.

None of the show stoppers were proper wow to me, and most of them seemed to be more about the icing than the biscuits.

5foot5 · 04/10/2023 09:57

I have got one of those custard cream cutters. It came as part of a set of four. The other three are Bourbon, Jammy Dodger and Party Ring.

I would love a custard cream but unfortunately, like a PP, I have just started a new diet. 😣

My recipe for custard creams uses custard powder!

IGotThrillsTheyreMultiplying · 04/10/2023 10:09

Really enjoying this years so far. It feels like the right balance has been restored.

I'm especially enjoying this return to proper baking and I am sure they are giving the contestants a little bit more time so they can mostly do a decent job. None of previous years watching good bakers rush to churn out something shocking. Some of those illusion biscuit bakes were really impressive looking.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 04/10/2023 10:33

Had to hide the thread until I had a chance to watch it this morning.

Poor Keith, seemed a nice guy and good flavours, but his did look simplistic in comparison. Nicky as well, but she is saved for now.

Noel seems to be very flirty with Christine!

Dan did great, didn't get a lot of airtime this time but did well in all three rounds, and particularly the last two, but I guess they wouldn't give star baker twice in a row unless it was really warranted with no-one else in the running, like when Juergen kept getting it.

I like the choices of tasks this time too, as I could imagine myself making them in some ways - nowhere near of this quality, but I could at least start coming up with ideas for animals, or illusion cakes or whatever. I'd still have been thrown in the technical by things like 'make a biscuit dough' without any proportions, though.

Josh's showstopper was good, as was one of the cheeseboards (Christine?). The pizza looked bizarre from the beginning - was clearly going to be too deep long before the icing got to it! But the cheese dripping from the slice looked good. I loved the tomatoes with the boiled sweets (Josh I think). I thought Abbi did well, but the bright green looked a bit startling. Maybe that's what dim sum looks like though! Was less sure about the chicken katsu, or the steak - chocolate never quite has the colour/consistency of meat, so I think those were always a bit less good on the illusion front, although the painted bowls were nice.

WhatapityWapiti · 04/10/2023 10:45

I absolutely loved the VT of Saku and her family crowding round the cooker to watch the milk boiling over, with Granny in Sri Lanka joining in via Face Time.

cheshirecatssmile · 04/10/2023 11:09

Was really pleased when Dan came 2nd in the technical
Some of the cakes where wonderful
I've been asking him so many questions, but as I'm new to bake off many of you may know the answers already.
Looking forward to after bites and next week's offerings

cheshirecatssmile · 04/10/2023 11:12

It's shot over a weekend
How the hell do you go to work on a Monday and keep your gob shut!

All cakes are eaten after the show
There about 100-150 people working on it and you get to take left overs home

WhatapityWapiti · 04/10/2023 11:42

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/09/2023 21:30

I have to disagree. Strictly is perfect Saturday Night viewing. Bake Off is perfect mid-week viewing.

I’m really intrigued as to what you thought was meant by the Jesus/John the Baptist reference @MotherOfGodWeeFella ?

MapleSyrupWaffles · 04/10/2023 12:08

Someone commented earlier on Tasha's accent. It sounds perhaps like she must have learned to talk before she needed to learn sign language. I was interested to learn that she spent much of her childhood in Australia, which made me wonder if she learned sign language later, if it's BSL that she uses, rather than an Australian sign language, or if she had to learn a new language when she moved/moved back. She might still have some amount of hearing? She mostly seems to sign along with what she's saying, but not absolutely always, so perhaps she could talk and work to an extent when they are trying to talk to her. (Although I don't really see how any of them talk and work very much, as the presenters and judges are quite annoying when they get in the way and chat too much!).

Talking of which, I thought that Keith’s dismissal of Alison when she was badgering him to tell a joke was absolutely hilarious!

(I quite like Alison but you could tell he was anxious and uncomfortable so I was pleased he unintentionally came out with something really funny).

I wondered about Australian SL vs BSL too.

I think she may be wearing an cochlear implant in the right side of her head? 🌹

Strawberrywalnutcake · 04/10/2023 20:27

I’m watching for the first time in a few years, not sure why I decided to give it a go again this year but I’m really enjoying it so glad I did.

I’m not on a diet so going to try making some custard creams this weekend Smile

AnImaginaryCat · 04/10/2023 20:53

Just caught up. Does look like they have gone back to more realistic and traditional bakes. Delighted!

You can tell it's early days, there were two people on it that I have zero recollection of being there last week. Still can't tell you their names 😄

Toddlerteaplease · 05/10/2023 10:30

Great to see someone wearing a cochlear implant. I've looked after so many children having them implanted, so great to see the end result.
