TV that's comforting but not utter rubbish

I have Covid. I'm finishing off some work and then am going to take to the sofa with a duvet. I need cheering, comforting but diverting things to watch.
I've just binged Last Tango in Halifax (well, I have two more to watch, but am going to need more!). I'm looking for things along those lines; TV that pulls you along and makes you feel a bit cosseted without insulting your intelligence.
TIA!

Really enjoying Series 2 of American Ghosts on Iplayer at the moment.

UK version and US Series 1 also lovely.

Gently funny and occasionally very moving.

FFSWhatToDoNow · 30/08/2023 13:07

Upright. Series 1 is better than 2 in my opinion but both excellent.

Greensleeves · 30/08/2023 13:07

I binged the whole of Downton Abbey when I was ill. It was fabulous.

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 30/08/2023 13:08

Schitts Creek is great

If you like K drama I have enjoyed King the Land recently

I've just looked that up on IMDB and I think I'd like it. What can you watch it on?

Katrinawaves · 30/08/2023 13:10

If you like Sally Wainwright, Scott and Bailey was also very good and a good sickbed watch

Think it’s on Sky. I have it downloaded (to watch in the bath).

dollyknocker · 30/08/2023 13:14

Having had covid then long covid I watched a lot of this kind of TV! Second Schitt's Creek, it's slow to get into but then just the most beautiful thing ever. Also Ted Lasso. I totally fell in love with The Great Pottery Throwdown too.

HerculesMulligan · 30/08/2023 13:15

Five Bedrooms. There are 3 seasons on iPlayer and the 4th is due at the weekend. Basically an Aussie Cold Feet, but really warm and engaging to watch.

imfae · 30/08/2023 13:20

If you haven’t already watched the Detectorists I would really recommend it . I put off watching it as thought I wouldn't really be interested in metal detecting . But although that is the backdrop it is really about the characters and very gentle , moving with fantastic actors .

Also loved “Mum “ . Could try bbc iPlayer for both .

Time40 · 30/08/2023 13:20

If you're interested in art, Fake or Fortune. There are about 9 series on iPlayer. It's fascinating.

I'm watching the latest series of Great British Sewing Bee at the moment.

cathyandclare · 30/08/2023 13:22

Another for Schitt's Creek and Ted Lasso- also Colin from Accounts is warm, funny and well done.

I was going to say Ghosts as well - very much comfort TV for me

I'll fire in my one size fits all recommendation of Godless on Netflix. It has heartwarming moments but plenty of shocking ones too, I loved it and I'm convinced you will too.

It's got Lady Mary in it, how brutal can it be? 😊

Comedycook · 30/08/2023 13:26

Ten pound poms

Call the midwife

BippityBobbityBoo · 30/08/2023 13:28

Another vote for detectorists, it’s lovely

PerkingFaintly · 30/08/2023 13:30

I've got hooked on Shakespeare & Hathaway.

It looks like it's going to be complete rubbish – and TBF the storylines are pretty weak – but the characters are a lot of fun and I'm a little bit in love with Lou and Sebastian.

imfae · 30/08/2023 13:32

I spend far too much time watching tv ….As others have mentioned Ghosts , five bedrooms and Colin from Accounts are very watchable . Ted Lasso and Shrinking if you have Apple TV .

I would also rate if you can get hold of it - Offspring . It was on netflix but then may have gone to pay per episode .

if you don’t mind watching programmes about parenting - Motherland , The letdown and Workin Mums ( although last few series were a bit rubbish ) are very funny .

off to explore how to become a tv critic 😁

7eleven · 30/08/2023 13:37

There’s three series of Sanditon on ITVX

PagingMrTomMorrow · 30/08/2023 13:38

It’s Dinnerladies and Golden Girls for me.

I also really like Gavin and Stacey and Mom.

DupontsYellowDressingGown · 30/08/2023 13:39

Fisk on Netflix, finished it yesterday and I loved it

Summerhillsquare · 30/08/2023 13:40

Lovestruck, Bump, the Change.

Boopear · 30/08/2023 13:43

And the next series of Fisk on ITVX😀

All of these! So lovely

Also to add Parks and Recreation

Young Offenders on Iplayer. Quite a bit of swearing but excellent

Another gem that not many people know of - not heart warming as such but funny - is Here We go also on Iplayer.

MarkWithaC · 30/08/2023 13:44

Wow, look at you all! Thanks everyone.
I tried Detectorists but it didn't hit the mark for me, despite Mackenzie Crook being adorable in it.

If I hadn't already seen all of Downton Abbey I totally would!

I'd forgotten about Scott and Bailey. I started it ages ago but for some reason didn't continue, even though I liked it – very good shout.

Ten Pound Poms and Fake or Fortune are in the category of 'probably never going to get round to them in normal circumstances', so seem perfect for the next few days.

Thanks again all Thanks
