TV that's comforting but not utter rubbish

I have Covid. I'm finishing off some work and then am going to take to the sofa with a duvet. I need cheering, comforting but diverting things to watch.
I've just binged Last Tango in Halifax (well, I have two more to watch, but am going to need more!). I'm looking for things along those lines; TV that pulls you along and makes you feel a bit cosseted without insulting your intelligence.
TIA!

Macdonald and Dodds - cost crime set in Bath - Jason Watkins is really good in it.

Poldark

7eleven · 30/08/2023 13:48

How about working your way through the Harry Potter films?!

KaarijasBowlCut · 30/08/2023 13:52

Alpha Males on Netflix is great and fits your criteria.

It's a Spanish comedy drama series (you can watch dubbed if you prefer) and it's about a group of male friends and their relationships after they attend a seminar on letting go of toxic masculinity.

It may not sound promising but it's surprisingly good fun, easy watching but not complete trash (though that has its place too!).

Hope you feel better soon.

I loved This Country – the comic mockumentary. One of the things I dislike about modern comedies is the lack of warmth or charm. In This Country, the characters are essentially sweet and good.

The Detectorists is also great. I add my vote for that.

Or maybe delve back and re-watch The Office? Fawlty Towers has never been bettered. And Hancock's Half Hour is still surprisingly funny. I've got a soft spot for Dad's Army. OK, so it's not hilarious, but the characters are so believable and likeable.

I've also been re-watching Dear John, a comedy show from the 1980s. The guy who wrote Only Fools and Horses wrote it – not bad at all. I vaguely remember it being on when I was a child.

I've loved watching Dead to Me on Netflix.

I've just read that Christina Applegate was diagnosed with MS whilst filming S3, she has been absolutely amazing to finish filming the series.

Lleys · 30/08/2023 14:24

Another for Schitts Creek. The Good Place? Motherland?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/08/2023 14:24

The Crown is my go-to comfort TV.

Criminal Minds (on Disney+) is good, if a bit dark - and with 16 series, you are basically a fully qualified criminal profiler by the end! 😉😁

My go to is The West Wing - sick day? In goes the DVD (it's also on All4 to stream).

I also binge-watched Cheer on Netflix when I was sick in early 2020 with what I suspect was "Original" Covid (work colleague had come back from a half-term skiing trip to Italy with a horrible cold and cough and everyone in the office caught it). There is a second season to watch as well. A documentary about American college cheerleaders is not as mind-numbing as it first sounds, but definitely doesn't require too many brain cells to enjoy 😜

Sounds interesting, thank you (and for the good wishes).
I’ve watched all of Poldark, sadly.
Not bothered about Harry Potter, but it has got me pondering other films I might catch up on.
Dead to Me is wonderful but I’ve watched it all. Don’t really want to rewatch things when there’s so much I haven’t seen.

Motherland doesn’t really appeal. Comedy in general I find it hard to find things I like. For me comedy’s peak was with Black Books and Spaced, and nothing more recent really comes up to the mark.

love The Crown but, again, I’m up to date.
So many good suggestions; thank you all so much!

Loved Cheer season one, but the second, with all the focus on the other team, I didn’t think worked. I rather love Monica the coach though 😄

Colin from accounts. It’s just fab. The whole family enjoyed it so much

LillianOrGillian · 30/08/2023 14:39

Afterlife, I laughed my head off and cried my eyes out in equal measure. I loved it.

When I had Covid I binge watched Call The Midwife, quite calm and easy for the fuzzy Covid brain.

Get well soon x

Virgin River on Netflix!

Shodan · 30/08/2023 14:51

I really enjoyed Grace and Frankie, for lighthearted-yet-moving entertainment.

And Outlander, for Sam Heughan in a kilt being all manly and stuff 😁

MissInterpretation · 30/08/2023 15:01

Pride & Prejudice 1996 BBC series. It's on iplayer now ( I think it's still on, it was up to a couple of week ago.) I'm not a telly watcher at all, but I love love love it and spent a brilliant day in hospital a few years ago watching the whole series in one go. I've been watching it again recently when I've had time, also on holiday with my kids in a country cottage, and it's just a lovely wrap you up warm kind of show. Love it! Get well soon Flowers

You've reminded me - the original Gossip Girl Grin

cathyandclare · 30/08/2023 15:11

If you haven't seen Call my Agent ( the French version) we all absolutely loved that.

IamSallyBowles · 30/08/2023 15:12

Heartstopper on Netflix .... so heartwarming

ihavespoken · 30/08/2023 15:15

Only Murders in the Building on Disney+ is brilliant. Only about 35 min per episode too and, despite the name, really lovely and funny

MrsMitford3 · 30/08/2023 15:15

Downton Abbey
The Durrells
All Creatures Great and Small
Call the Midwife
Daisy Jones and the Six
Schitts Creek
Also recently watched a film called Pride-based on true events with the unlikely combination of striking coal miners and a group of lesbian and gay activists in the 1980's. Very funny and heartwarming with a bit of sadness

ilovemydogmore · 30/08/2023 15:16

Ted Lasso!

DresdenDoll · 30/08/2023 15:17

I've recently been very sick and worked my way through all 7 series' of Grace and Frankie on Netflix.
