Can't believe they just used this term of phrase:
Mylo: "Jakey, you can't just go 'round duffing people up!"

How are LO's supposed to undersatnd that sort of language (unless their parent's are pikeys and use it anyway)
My LO just looked at me like I was meant to explain it to her (yeah right, like I'm going to teach her so she can use it!!)

Anyone else heard random phrases on Beebies/similar?

OP posts:
Twinkie1 · 25/02/2008 15:37

Far better if they had said beating the living shit of out people?

TheFallenMadonna · 25/02/2008 15:38

I say 'duffing up'.

Not sure I'm a "pikey"

Is it particularly objectionable?

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 15:38

Oh come on it's not like he said "beating the shit out of people"

Once more mn never ceases to amaze!

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 15:39

great minds twinkie

muppetgirl · 25/02/2008 15:40

It's a colloquialism and we have many of those in the English language. Just look at homophones, they are enough to confuse anyone?
Why not just say ?It?s a different way of saying?.? And then you are broadening your lo?s vocabulary. No harm done.

PortAndLemon · 25/02/2008 15:41

Clearly should have been "Egad, Jakey old bean, you simply can't go around resorting to fisticuffs at the least provocation!"

nailpolish · 25/02/2008 15:42

pmsl Port

TheFallenMadonna · 25/02/2008 15:42
Grin
tissy · 25/02/2008 15:43

I bet the writer used to read the Beano as a boy (or girl)

muppetgirl · 25/02/2008 15:47

...didn't mean homophones were colloquialisms, just that they are many confusing things in the English language, homophones being one of them!

kiskideesameanoldmother · 25/02/2008 15:51

and here i was thinking that 'duffing up' meant 'impregnating'. Will get me foriegn hat and coat now.

Wolfgirl · 25/02/2008 15:53

I hate the Tweenies, cant stand the blighters. But the kids do, so when in Rome...

and agree with other posters about the word duffing. whats the deal? I used to use it all the time. Picked it up in the playground years on back.... I guess you got a load of Pikies on yer hands then kyala

Wolfgirl · 25/02/2008 15:55

..anyway, what is a Pikey? LOL

theyoungvisiter · 25/02/2008 15:57

duffing up is a totally normal phrase - I can't say I use it every day but I definitely know what it means and I am NOT "pikey" in any respect. Can't see it's any different to "beating up", eg "stop duffing up your sister".

Surely learning new words - even - shock, horror - slang, is all part of the point of letting them watch tv ?

("pikey" however is an objectionable term)

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 15:57

LOL Kiskidee
up the duff = pregnant
Duffing up = beating seven shades of shite out of someone.

UnquietDad · 25/02/2008 15:57

Jake is so going to get bullied when he finally gets to school.

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 15:58

I hope so UD I hope so

PortAndLemon · 25/02/2008 16:04

"get someone up the duff" = impregnate them

"duff someone up" = beat, as Twinkie1 so eloquently put it, the living shit out of them

I wonder what the origins of "duff" are? It's clearly a very useful multipurpose term.

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 16:15

In terms of being pregant it stems from the term "in the pudding club" dough being another term for pudding and duff being a different pronounciation of the word dough.

Duff also used to be a euphanism for penis too.

No idea about the duffing up in sense of beating someone up though
