Can't believe they just used this term of phrase:
Mylo: "Jakey, you can't just go 'round duffing people up!"

How are LO's supposed to undersatnd that sort of language (unless their parent's are pikeys and use it anyway)
My LO just looked at me like I was meant to explain it to her (yeah right, like I'm going to teach her so she can use it!!)

Anyone else heard random phrases on Beebies/similar?

I am always using this phrase to DD

e.g

"Did you fall over in the playground?"
"Yes Archie pushed me"
"Archie pushed you?!" "Where does he live? Tell me where he lives? I'm going to go around there and duff him up!"

Hulababy · 25/02/2008 20:26

Not sure the term "chav" is a great deal better than "pikey" TBH

Nothing wrong with "duffing" in this context. Just another term.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/02/2008 20:28

OK, so you use the terms 'chav' and 'pikey' (interchangeably and ignorant of their provenance), but you look down on people who say "duffing up".

I can sense the sharks circling!

kyala · 25/02/2008 20:31

I don't say the words, and I am an adult I don't particularly need my 2 yo coming out with it and causing others to think that that is how I teach my children to speak!
Crikey!

I am just very aware of how the English language is rapidly changing and it would be nice to have a little more filtering on the influences that come in at the early stages of development.

Wiimii: I've still got a bit of baby brain but I know to speak properly.

whether you physically say a word or just type it, you are still using it

kyala · 25/02/2008 20:36

I do, you're right, I should've been a little more selective in the word that I used

Your child will pick up on all sorts of phrases and terms as s/he gets older. Treat it as extending their vocab, giving them the meanings and alternatives.

If you don't want your child to hear different terms and phrases to what you use then I am afraid you will have to stop turning the Tv on, and probably the radio, and avoid playgroups and nurseries too.
