Can't believe they just used this term of phrase:
Mylo: "Jakey, you can't just go 'round duffing people up!"

How are LO's supposed to undersatnd that sort of language (unless their parent's are pikeys and use it anyway)
My LO just looked at me like I was meant to explain it to her (yeah right, like I'm going to teach her so she can use it!!)

Anyone else heard random phrases on Beebies/similar?

Do you use the word "pikey" in front of your children?

MamaG · 25/02/2008 16:30

wiimii - good memory!

fedupandisolated · 25/02/2008 16:30

I love Tweenies sometimes. I recall an episode where Jake used a golf club to hit a golf ball which hit Fizz (who naturally protested muchly).

Milo: "Great shot mate - hole in one"

I giggled all day.

ConnorTraceptive · 25/02/2008 16:31

Would love an episode where jake treads in dog turd

fryalot · 25/02/2008 16:36

how does the OP feel about the use of "old duffer" to describe a person of increasing years, and the word "duff" to describe something that is no longer working in the manner to which it was intended?

Astrophe · 25/02/2008 16:38

whats a pikey then?

Like kiskidee I thought it meant impregnating (foreigner here too), - but if it means 'roughing' someone up then whats the problem?

Astrophe · 25/02/2008 16:40

interesting addition to exploration of the etymology of 'duff' - In Australia we use "duffer" to mean someone silly/daft.

Fimbo · 25/02/2008 16:43

My home town is where the Beano is produced and we use "duffing up".

And no I am not a "pikey" (charming term btw).

PortAndLemon · 25/02/2008 16:45

Come to think of it, that must have been standard UK English usage too -- there's a bit in one of the Swallows and Amazons books where the father telegraphs (referring to his children) "Better drowned than duffers; if not duffers won't drown."

Heifer · 25/02/2008 17:06

nothing wrong with Duffing up...goodness me.

Although I what rather shocked that I heard you Moron on Cbbc the other day - those finger puppet fighting things.....

Astrophe · 25/02/2008 19:20

WHATS A PIKEY???

kyala · 25/02/2008 20:03

What's a pikey?!! It's a type of commoner!!

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 25/02/2008 20:05

a pikey is someone who lives 'on the cheap' either by stealing or by only buying from the £ shop or similar.

Its also used as an offensive word for travellers/gypsies/carnival workers

kiskideesameanoldmother · 25/02/2008 20:06

I think 'pikey' is not so nice slang for Travellers.

morningpaper · 25/02/2008 20:07

I've no idea what's wrong with the expression 'duffing up', unless Jake was actually impregnating someone

'Pikey' on the other hand is a tad offensive

"Pikey" is sometimes used to describe them there travelling folk also known as "Gypos" by some people (never heard a Tweenie use either word though..they are far too good mannered).

colditz · 25/02/2008 20:10

Pikey is a term oft used to describe poor people.

Yes, it is often used a a racial insult too. But I do frequently hear the Pound shop being referred to as "The Pikey Shop"

TurkeyLurkey · 25/02/2008 20:15

Getting back to the point of the OP, I like the fact that the Tweenies say things like "duffing up", makes them more real (which they are, of course). Plus it gives me something to smile about when watching it .

kyala · 25/02/2008 20:17

I'm perfectly aware that it's not as bad as swearing but surely they could've thought up a more eloquent way of expressing this type of gesture?
I'm no snob but I don't want my LO's growing up thinking this is the right way to talk.

Exactly Portandlemon I'd much prefer that sort of language (In fact that's quite cute, I might just teach her to say it!!)

Kiskideesameanoldmother (have I spelt that right?!!): Exactly, I used to use it as such when I was younger!

Wow Connortraceptive You're a very useful person to have on these threads, I'll be coming straight to you before posting in the future (you'll see me a lot then!! )
Whe did a Tweenie say turd?!!

mumofmonsters: I don't say the word pikey I merely type it, I never use words that could be offensive to anyone, I don't categorise people in words (I stick to doing it anonymously online instead, obv!) I am just very aware of the types of people that use certain language (this is obviously just happening in my local area then, as you all seem to use the term "duffing up") I guess I can put it down to my upbringing (although that was done on a council estate so still not quite sure why I seem to have a more upturned view on language?!)
I certainly would never use that word in connection with travellers/gypsies/hippies etc as I myself am a true hippy!

Squonk: Umm I've never actually heard that term of phrase so would have to ask my grandmother how she would feel to being referred to as being an "old duffer"!

Sorry Fimbo, it was not aimed at anyone on MN (the pikey's here don't have computers, they merely steal to sell, from personal exp!)

kyala · 25/02/2008 20:19

Thank you WiiMii, I meant Chav then, sorry for misuse of the word "Pikey", I obviously don't use it often enough!

OP posts:
kyala · 25/02/2008 20:21

"Someone's pikeyed my bike". I love that! Thanks Wiimii, that link has got me giggling now (in the best of tastes of course!)
