Looking for real Sci Fi series!
IwantToRetire · 18/03/2023 19:49
I have got access to Sky's SciFi channel but most of the time they dont seem to show any Sci Fi its all witches and warlocks or supernatural.
I am not even sure what I want, but something a bit more about future worlds, other planets, how will our world be in the future. More sort of Space Odessy, Star Trek.
Anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks
(I did just watch Trickster on SciFi which turned out not be science fiction but about traditions and myths of Canada's Indigenous people, focused on a young teenage boy with a dysfunctional family. And found it quite interesting not knowing of course how much was real in terms of traditions and how much not. Quite a lot of strong female characters. Some violence and gore.)

Expanse on Amazon Prime is excellent. I also enjoyed Upload, that’s Amazon Prime too. Altered Carbon is a pretty good version of the book, I think it might be on Netflix, I can’t remember.

What about that ‘project blue book’ about roswell -mit was on sky/NOW recently and have you never watched ‘taken’ from about 20 years ago? It was Steven Spielberg I think, I’ve got it on DVD im not even a SciFi fan but it was absolutely brilliant, maybe available on some streaming. Had Dakota fanning as a Little girl she was so cute , i can recommend that

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar altered carbon has been recommended to me but I don’t have Amazon atm. (the joy of streaming services )

Second expanse , also if you like Star Wars , Mandolorian and Andor on Disney plus.
TwoMonthsOff · 18/03/2023 20:13

Foundation (on Apple TV) is brilliant.
I’ve a few free months of Apple and totally forgot I did so thanks for the reminder and reccommendation

Outside of The Expanse, I guess For All Mankind even if it technically isn't future based, it's a hard sci-fi alternate history show. Very good production values and essentially diverges from the '69 moon landing being made by the USSR kicking the USA into trying to do better.
And of course for the science fantasy elements there is Mando and Andor. I can't recommend anything Trek since the Abrams films, and definitely not the shows these days. Just rewatch TOS or TNG or DS9 again.

I've just double checked and Altered Carbon is definitely Netflix, although if you don't have that either then that info is no use to you.

Thank you ! I’ve got a lot to catch up on ….this is what I meant about streaming (and im quite active on no tv licence threads) there’s so much choice and can pick and choose, I do remember a colleague at work said Altered Carbon is good

Stargate SG1 is old but great if you like aliens and space/other planets.
Fringe is also great. Not about other planets but is still sci fi.
IwantToRetire · 18/03/2023 20:40
Oh dear, looks like I am going to have to subscribe to additional channels than my package with VM offers.
Yes have seen Taken, but might watch it again, as it was some time ago.
And I think I started the Project Blue Book, or it might have been another about Roswell series, so could look that up.
But very grateful for all other suggestions. I need to make a list and see if some are on a service that offer first month free or something.
I also like, or find intersting, the ones that I suppose are post disaster series. ie how would we cope if we had no electricity. What would we do if the ice caps melted. Not sure if that counts as sci fi.
Thank you.

i want to say the other series about Roswell…..was it Warehouse 51? Had Donny from Frasier in it ?
Soscrewed · 18/03/2023 20:47
The orville on Disney plus. Light and cheerful- episodic not thr huge story arcs that seem popular right now. Starts off a little goofy but quickly settles in drama with occasional moments of humour.

Amzon Prime still has Fringe which starts of as "strange incident of the week" kind of show, but goes on to alternative futures.
There's always the remake of Lost in Space on Netflix for a bit of mindless fun.

Warehouse 13, laughs included

For All Mankind is a great alternate reality for what things might be like if the USSR had been 1st to the moon and competed with the USA through the rest of the 21st century. It's on Apple TV.
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/03/2023 20:53
Fringe was excellent (although the second last series felt like it had run out ideas, but they ramped it up again for the final series). I don't think it's available anywhere though, it's so old that I have the whole thing on DVD.
