Looking for real Sci Fi series!

IwantToRetire · 18/03/2023 19:49

I have got access to Sky's SciFi channel but most of the time they dont seem to show any Sci Fi its all witches and warlocks or supernatural.

I am not even sure what I want, but something a bit more about future worlds, other planets, how will our world be in the future. More sort of Space Odessy, Star Trek.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks

(I did just watch Trickster on SciFi which turned out not be science fiction but about traditions and myths of Canada's Indigenous people, focused on a young teenage boy with a dysfunctional family. And found it quite interesting not knowing of course how much was real in terms of traditions and how much not. Quite a lot of strong female characters. Some violence and gore.)

That's why I suggested it.

Another one recommending a rewatch of deep space nine. The definite Star Trek for me.

if you don’t mind a cartoon I really like the Star Trek cartoon Lower Decks - it’s hilarious and has some lovely moments.

Farscape. I think it’s on Amazon Prime

Stargate SG1 (and the follow up series, Atlantis)

Babylon 5 - the special effects might look dated now (90s CGI), but the storylines are great.

Battlestar Galactica (the remake).

Firefly (followed by the film Serenity).

‘The last of us’ on Now tv is excellent in my opinion. Extremely well made and cast. Post apocalyptic but with a proper storyline. Worth the 9,99 for a month of Now for that alone. I also really enjoyed Away on Now which is (imo) science fiction/ fantasy ( not wizards tho!!)

You just beat me to it with Firefly. Surprised the thread got to page 2 without it being mentioned.

It's not new, but there are great characters, action and humour. Gina Torres who was in Suits was in it.

Battlestar Galactica, the remake. Fantastic show.

Agree with this, pretty old in itself now, but well worth a watch if you haven't seen already.

If you have Netflix 'Dark' is great!! It's German but English dubbed or you can choose subtitles. I've never really watched any dubbed series as I worried it would bug me but it's done well and you don't notice once you get into it! It's brilliant, like nothing I've watched before. I can't say much as I don't want to ruin it, seriously worth a watch though. You gotta concentrate when watching it's a proper head spinner 🤣

Hope you enjoy it. I still have the DVD boxset!
When it came out it was so fresh and intelligent. Like a grown up x files.

@Whatsnewpussyhat
I do remember ‘snippets’ and liked them and I’m always up for a new series even if it’s an old series (not. A bad thing - I’ve watched the sopranos and wire about four times) I’d like to watch prison break again as well
thank you

phew - well I've made my list from suggestions so far, and sometime on Sunday I will check to see which I can get with my package.

And then work out if it is worth signing up to another service. Some give you a free month, and some a month or two at a reduced rate.

I know I caught up on Outlander (not Sci Fi or is it?!) through an offer.

And if I get that sorted with the Easter weekend coming up, maybe time to do some binge watching.

Once again many thanks

Does anyone remember the series on one of the main channels I think that was post disaster and was and Anglo Swiss production. Parts of that were good, but others just silly.

Had some quite big name actors.

Here’s a list of post-apocalyptic tv shows from IMDB - is it one of these?

You can get three months Disney plus (Mandolorian and Andor) with tescos vouchers and cancel afterward if you want.

EllieQ - none of them seem to be it, but interesting link - thanks!

Disney Plus with tescos vouchers and cancel afterward if you want. - that sounds really good and far better than spending vouchers on cake!

Looks like I can get all 5 series of Fringe which should keep me going for a while. I think I ignored it as I assumed it was supernatural spooky stuff. But maybe more like the X Files?

I also ignored the Last of Us as it sounded like a series I had watched a while ago, about (and this was pre Covid) people being told to stay indoors for a month (or something) and then when some tried to leave their homes they found chaos and many dead. And a young girl paired up with what seemed a dodgy man and they planned to leave the cityr and find somewhere safe.

Many of the series mentioned are available via the WM store but at £2.99 an episode so it would make more sense to sign up even on a temporary basis to a service that has a good selection.

Thanks again.

I have just watched a series called The Swarm, set in the now/near future, when the Oceans start fighting back.
Multiple countries were involved in the production, so there are some subtitles.

Sounds like it might be War of the Worlds: www.imdb.com/title/tt9686194/
