LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

Re Cathie walking away, I think that's fair enough. She seems to have most of the responsibility for looking after her friend. I'm surprised there aren't more blow ups between all the pairs. Map reading is notorious for being a flashpoint for a row.

Re Kevin and taxis and winning: that's really what the winners did in the first series. They weren't particularly liked either but they focussed on winning. Maybe that's his strategy even though he gets it wrong. And Niagara Falls was for Claudia; he'd have given it a miss. The thing about being envious he didn't catch the first fish was, I wonder, unkind editing of a clumsily worded comment.

Ladi's constant wisdom and observations about life would get on my tits if he's like that all the time 😁.

purpleme12 · 29/04/2023 13:03

I think the friends just know what each other need.
Cathie (?) Just needed a minute to regroup. She was a bit snappy but I think Tricia understood she needed a minute and gave her one

I don't think Cathie is "bossy" that's often a term used against assertive girls and women. I think they were a bit stressed when the work placement delayed them. Cathie had to redraft their plan. All seemed well later on.

I think it's understandable for them to get snappy with eachother at this stage, Zainib us also been a bit mean to Mobeen at times, they must get on each others nerves spending all that time together in a stressful situation and getting increasingly tired as the days go by.

Kevin "speaking" French was proper Partridge.

TokyoSushi · 29/04/2023 17:15

You didn't think Kevin's French was serious?! It was very Del Trotter!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/04/2023 17:21

Being stuck with the same person no variety or breaks for over 40 days would get on anyone's nerves

Samcro · 29/04/2023 18:13

I got confused when taxi man and daughter took a boat to niagra no mention of how much it cost and when they got a cheap hotel cost wasn’t mentioned, or did I miss it?

KrasiTime · 29/04/2023 22:18

PuppyMonkey · 27/04/2023 07:10

Ladi and Monique decided to hang around at a bus station and take a later bus which went overnight specifically so they wouldn’t get to the city early (I’ve forgotten which city they would be arriving at) and have to find overnight accommodation. They don’t HAVE to stay in a 500 dollar hotel.

When I backpacked we often got overnight buses when we could to avoid having to pay for a hotel. It’s a sensible way to do it.

For the person who said Niagara on bucket list go to Iguazu Falls if you can, instead of Niagara, if budget allows. Niagara is nothing compared to Iguazu.

I would love for the two friends to win. They are my favourites.

I'm intrigued by the invisible mums. Was Claudia's mum really happy to let her spend so much time with grandparents rather than father or mother after the split? How's Claudia's relationship with her mother?
Were Monique's parents together growing up? Does her mum also view St Ladi as a man without flaws? Is mum present? Is she OK? (Would defo like to believe that Ladi is as great as he looks, but the cynical side of me says that Monique's mum might see it differently).

I'm more interested in the travel aspect rather than their personal lives.
To which they miss a huge chunk out to focus on their personal lives. 🤷‍♀️

Leftbutcameback · 29/04/2023 22:52

I was reading an interview this week with the guys who won the last series. They said food was a huge issue - one lost a stone and a half and they had to ask the producers for food. I think I’d be really irritable with lack of sleep, food, and being stuck with the same person for that long! In fact I know I couldn’t do it even for a week.

Stressybetty · 30/04/2023 00:56

Actually pretty impressed at Monique's lack of sweat patches on her pale grey leggings. I'd have crotch and bum sweat patches along with camel toe in them.

Did you see one of them ran the London marathon? I wonder if he did give the winnings to charity as he was running for a charity last weekend.

I was also wondering this.. I suspect taxi man is most definitely not liked by the mother - no mention at all of her! Ladi is no doubt without faults but from what I can gather has tried hard in life to redeem himself. But again, no mother mentioned 🤷🏼‍♀️

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/04/2023 09:29

I also want to see more nitty gritty of the travel and less cod psychology.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2023 09:38

Genuinely, though, that would be a different programme. That would just be another travel programme, showing us Canada. The concept of this show is more than just a travel challenge : it's meant to be about challenging oneself personally, bonding , learning about yourself, healing, stepping out of the comfort zone : it's a bit like MAFS if they were all as ordinary as Ollie and Tahnee it'd not be as intriguing.. It's actually always been like that. I'd be really bored otherwise, myself. Could just watch Great Train Journeys of the world, or Jane McDonald for that... this gets us talking, which is surely the point?

Pebble21uk · 30/04/2023 11:11

At the risk of outing myself - I was cast on an episode of The Repair Shop. And although it's about repairing items, as far as casting is concerned it's ALL about the story! I know a lot of people complain that that show is too much sob story and not enough about the thing being repaired - but that is what the producers want. In fact I would say they actively manipulate emotions to try and get as much emotion out of you as possible. I swore blind I wouldn't cry... just not that kind of person - but they managed it! 😂

Crumpetdisappointment · 30/04/2023 11:40

and that is why i can't stand The Repair Shop
too many tears

purpleme12 · 30/04/2023 11:42

I don't mind the back stories in RATW.
I don't see them as sob stories (whereas in many other programmes I would see them that way)

I agree. My DM has something I would love to get repaired but she isn't dying or dead, the person who gave it to her isn't dying or dead, no one escaped the Nazis or.came across in the Windrush so there is no point applying.

QuietlyConfident · 30/04/2023 12:12

We have a battered old item from the 19th century on display - I think my father bought it from a junk shop in the 1950s.

I've seriously considered getting the family on board with a heartfelt story of how it was passed down to my late lamented grandfather from his grandfather who grew up in terrible poverty and saved it as a sole family heirloom so I can get on The Repair Shop to get it fixed. I can actually cry on command at a moment's notice, which would help.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2023 12:38

Oh, I like a good sob story. Catharsis and all that. People are otherwise very boring , myself included obviously. I'd be problematical as if I went on anything like The Repair Shop or Strictly and they asked about my family, I'd have to say 'well, I don't really see them much and we don't like each other.' Grin

I guess I get vicarious pleasure form other people's memories and bonds! That's why I quite like the Kevin and Claudia stuff because it , for a change, has a depiction of a fraught relationship and a fucked up family!

the80sweregreat · 30/04/2023 12:44

I suppose you could make up a story for your item you want repaired. I wonder if they check though ? ..although that wouldn't be that easy to check out for many really old things !!
They do sometimes go to a persons home to film , but not that often.

Cathie (?) Just needed a minute to regroup. She was a bit snappy but I think Tricia understood she needed a minute and gave her one

i thought the taller lady actually said - lets skip this work and head to next location earlier.

then shorter lady said she needed to think and regroup - and then they did the work anyway.

when skipping the work would have been a better plan i think? (if allowed) rather than making them later than what was in the original plan due to poor planning by the work organisor.

purpleme12 · 30/04/2023 13:19

That's what they said yes

RaraRachael · 30/04/2023 15:00

I watched Series 1 and can't remember there being so much emphasis on personal stories and relationships - maybe there was and I didn't remember it.
I think nowadays there is a lot more talk about this sort of stuff so that's probably why there's so much of it in this series. Maybe the producers think that's what people want to watch - I don't - or maybe it's to pad out the limited travel options available to the contestants.
I hope it isn't going to end up in a sudden dash to the finish line by all 4 couples.

Stressybetty · 30/04/2023 15:18

I think the shorter one said to the work organiser, that they were relying on that money to get to the next location. Don't know why as they had budget left. Assuming she's really worried about running out of cash and the risk of arriving last was worth waiting for the work.
