Luther : The Fallen Sun

Bloody tense innit 😬
gingersnappz · 10/03/2023 22:23
Never going to stop my car in the rain to help someone from now on, that's for sure!

True story. I've watched 80% of it through my fingers.
Motnight · 10/03/2023 22:26
Just finished watching this. Did Idris sing the theme tune at the end?!
Much better than the last couple of series I thought! Though not as good as the first couple. I think that the elements of surprise are much fewer now. Loved the nod to Idris not being James Bond. Also really enjoyed London still being the main location.
Not sure how much further Luther can go to be honest though I will keep watching if there are any more films.

I still remember the bus scene which scared me for weeks!

Those 2 hours flew by!
I’ll be here for whatever future Luther they throw at us.
QueSyrahSyrah · 10/03/2023 22:35
Yes yes to the Bond thing. Continuity holes that whole cities could fall into though. I know they were trying to pass Iceland off as the European alps because of the getting there issue but it doesn't pass, frankly.
DH joyfully pointed out that nobody's breath was visible in what was supposed to be sub 0 temperatures either.
Trying not to drop specific spoilers!

It was absolutely fantastic.
Who's the chief 🧐 I have suspicions! Don't want to say too much!

Love the F U to James Bond moment, and hoping for a sequel!
FreezyWater · 10/03/2023 23:11
So good. But definitely not as jumpy/scary as the first couple of series. I am however, here for the sequel!!!!
TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 10/03/2023 23:20
@Motnight its the scene with the guy coming out from under the bed that gets me. Terrifying.
foxlover47 · 10/03/2023 23:24

Have always meant to watch Luther but never have for one reason or another. Do you think you could watch this without having seen all the series?

I think so. I have watched it all but my memory for things I watched a while ago isn't great (had to watch all Happy Valley again before the last series). I still enjoyed it.

Oh dear. I liked Luther and was looking forward to this but I must be in the minority. I thought it was a bit tosh. No character development (and we had 2 hours to do that). Idris is a great actor I think but he didn't really get to do anything justice. The extreme story line is very dated I think. And the ending was a bit too easy.
The premise that the fear of exposure is greater than the actual thing that would be exposed was brilliant- but that was about it for me!
PS I will watch the sequel!

Shouted at the tv when they didn't show who it was!

@TherapistInATabard @QueSyrahSyrah
the only thing I would say is that if you haven’t watched the previous series you could go into the film believing he was a cop that committed crimes bad enough to put him into prison.
whereas if you get to know the character throughout 5 seasons you can make up your mind
About his methods and decide whether you like him and forgive/condone his actions.

Intriguing! Thank you 😊

I agree. I would actually watch at least series 1 and 2 first.
NoShitHemlock · 11/03/2023 13:24
Was anyone else seriously distracted by Andy Serkis' hair? It properly took me out of the film!
Having said that I really enjoyed it, and yes, you could watch it without having seen any of the previous series but to get the full experience I think you are better off watching the TV series first.
I8toys · 11/03/2023 16:24
No Paul McGann and I missed Alice rocking up.
Pure escapism though and thoroughly entertaining. But I find Andy Serkis really distracting - he always seem to overact to me. When he had his hoody up I just saw gollum's face!
We were criticising how long it takes to get from Dover to where the end scenes were filmed, that there is never any traffic in London and the helicopter flying all the way there with divers in scuba gear at the ready. And marveling at the proper snow!
I did wonder if it Idris singing at the end.
superoz · 11/03/2023 16:50
It was enjoyable but some parts were ludicrous. The TV series was much more creepy and had more jump scares, maybe I’m more conditioned to it now. Also the geography of London really irked me, when police cars are supposedly rushing to Soho except they show shots of Canary Wharf which is miles away!
Some major plot holes - things I can’t discuss as too spoilery.
And really missed Ruth Wilson.
I wonder what creative decision went into choosing Andy Serkis’s hairstyle -dh and dd said it was Lego hair!
