Thread 2 :)

Looking forward to catching up on tonight's ep! What was it again? A children's cartoon?

I reckon I could win over Lord Shuggie in my hi-viz, steely boots and my craggy coupon.

I’d be a refreshing change.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2023 11:30

Especially in the more trendy sectors. You wouldn’t catch anyone working in a creative industry even thinking about dressing like that. They look like hookers. And no, that’s not internalised misogyny, they do.

Oh full lips and tight clothing are most definitely for the male gaze 😊

I'm sure men like tight clothes in general but I really don't think that aesthetic is for men. Can't imagine the lips being for men either. Poster paint coloured business suits and inflated lips are some women's idea of modern power dressing.

Whoever styles Karen does a great job.

You bloody would 👍
It vexes me that I look around classrooms and see teenage girls going for this look.

Do they? I don't see it on youngsters here.

Maireas · 13/03/2023 11:45

Right.
It's copied from the Kardashian/Love Island look.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 13/03/2023 12:07

I think photo filters are part of the problem - they create an image that's not possible in real life, but some young people seem to feel they should look like a filtered photo.

I agree.

Maireas · 13/03/2023 12:11

They do, @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss , when I go round the classroom the girls have a huge amount of shiny contour on, and lipgloss. Huge eyelashes are the thing.

ArcaneWireless · 13/03/2023 12:14

I love contouring in daylight.

It is like Commando is the desired look.

I have worn less camouflage. It was more subtle. And I’m not even kidding.

ArcaneWireless · 13/03/2023 12:15

The eyelashes round here are like a Labrador retriever’s back legs.

ArcaneWireless · 13/03/2023 12:18

I do look at the lashes wistfully though.

The menopause moths have been at my brows and lashes.

Im not keen on the werewolf brows though.

Done well, contouring looks incredible...in still photos. Even in properly lit, maybe filtered videos. Fucking witchcraft.

In real life, it doesn't work because the shadows don't move the way they would do if all those highs and hollows were real. It only really works on people who don't need it.

It's like an extreme version of bronzing, which still works in real life as long as you don't overdo it.

Of course, to some people makeup is art with their face as the canvas, and some people are unbelievably talented at it. And that's great, as long as it's what you want.

ArcaneWireless · 13/03/2023 12:26

Someone did my face once for their portfolio way back when.

I looked glorious. And my own mam didn’t recognise me. If I had that photo now, I would have a wallpaper made of it. My face was rearranged not long after.

It is a skill and, yes, art. There is a wee lassie in Tesco who does magic eye make up. She has promised if I ever have a special night out she can do me a snazzy eye.

Maireas · 13/03/2023 12:32

That sounds fabulous, @ArcaneWireless - what a shame you don't have the picture. The lass in Tesco sounds great, it genuinely is a creative art. You should go for it!

ArcaneWireless · 13/03/2023 12:36

She does different colours depending on her mood. The first day I saw her it was shades of purple.

Done less skilfully, (by me probably) it would look like a black eye. She looked amazing. And I said so.

If she set up an on line make up class she would coin it. ☺️

There ye are. A lovely candidate for next year. Shug would be transfixed.

Maireas · 13/03/2023 12:51

She should do that, great business idea!
I've never worn more than mascara and lipstick, so I think for me it's habit. In my formative years many of us were engaged with feminist campaigns, and we tended to reject that kind of imagery.
Anyway, she sounds amazing!

I can watch the video @ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe put up, here in Ireland, great fun to watch!
I'm still watching, but two things struck me that I want to say before I forgot: 1 ) Tim asking football fans "have you got a mobile phone?" 😆 2) in the preview/ last week on... when Suralan fires the candidate it didn't look like it was full of the drama we're used to now.

I remember someone on MN saying they bought the wolf jacket and still have it 😁

DH got as far as screen testing for that first series. He didn’t have a mobile phone at the time so maybe not such a daft question.

James Max (of the wolf jacket) had a higher paying job in corporate property at the time (seem to remember he mentioned his Aston Martin at some point).

Agree. It makes me laugh when they have to pitch to buyers - those women working in actual businesses look VERY different and much better.

Very few of the candidates now seem to work "in business" so they have no idea,of the corporate world which the show still seems biased towards.
Cake shops, sweet shops, hair salon - none that have actually scaled their business yet

TitsInAbsentia · 14/03/2023 12:12

Can you imagine this lot going on to dragons den? Be the quickest pitches ever!

Rowthe · 14/03/2023 12:46

Wish they had had a task selling on a shopping channel this year

Yes. That would have been great, especially as we have several similar tasks.

Thr shopping channel one is usually a real challenge for them. With this lot it would have been a complete disaster. Imagine whatsherface (Wallace and Gromit lady) arguing talking over everyone trying to sell things

JemimaTab · 16/03/2023 20:37

I was wondering how well the previous winners have done with their businesses. I know Mark Wright (the Australian guy with some kind of recruitment business) did really well and sold it for £10m or something.
I work near one of Dr Leah’s premises and it’s a bit gritty and really doesn’t look like there’s much going on there at all.
But I’ve not heard about any of the others.
