People watch it because it’s entertaining. For all the it’s rubbish people are still tuning in and talking about it,

I don’t mind it, it’s filed under comfort TV with MiC. We don’t bother with many shows, no Strictly or Bake Off etc in fact hardly anything else - more series than TV shows

They used to do tasks where teams had to pitch for the right to sell certain products, e.g. at exhibitions, and then sell them. There was also occasionally quite a fun one where they had to set up stands selling a range of stuff chosen from wholesalers and assess things like how much stock to keep, what price to sell at etc. I don't remember anything like that in this series or indeed the last ones, though admittedly they couldn't really do direct sales in 2020 and 2021. I get it that the ability to sell direct to the public isn't so relevant to what Sugar is supposed to be looking for, but it does make for more entertaining TV.

Mind you, judging from the interview round, it sounds like they need to have a task around working out the difference between profit, loss, turnover, stock etc; and also in drafting a proposal with basic literacy.

and the same again about net/gross and profit/turnover is that not taught (anymore) at school?

I’m 34 and I don’t remember that ever being taught when I was at school. I do know the difference though and I don’t run my own business.

I didn’t think the business plans were written up in the house. Megan said the reason hers was so short is because she was so busy with work at her cafe so I assumed she must have done it before entering the process.

I think this series was missing that one stand out candidate that you know won’t win but you still root for like Elizabeth or Thomas. Cannon boy could have been it this series but he left too early.

It wasn't taught in my day, either - I'm nearly 50. 'Business studies' was learning to type (or not learning in my case) and messing about on BBC microcomputers.

But it's common sense, really - an understanding of the English language should be all you need to grasp those concepts.

HighInfidelity · 18/03/2023 18:57

Oh, I absolutely agree. It’s very much common sense and something that you would make sure you’re definitely certain of if running your own business and presenting a business plan. I’m not making excuses for the candidates, just answering the poster who asked if it was still taught in schools.

I’m late 40s and it was a subject when I was in secondary school. It covered business studies, not typing. It was a follow on course from ‘commerce’. I did both and enjoyed it. Typing was done as part of another subject called ‘computer studies’.

The cooking it yourself part of the tasks was a pain for them :(
I doubt there is a Waitrose in Dubai for the boat day out , but I'm prepared to be told I'm wrong ! It's a better idea though for the English tasks ( like the one in Shrewsbury etc)
I doubt that most business end up doing the catering themselves.

There is actually Waitrose in Dubai (also M&S btw), but the selection of nibbles is rather disappointing so your point stands.

The whole purpose of the show is to make a laughing stock of the candidates

Have you ever seen a series where Karen /claude/Margaret hasnt grimaced, eye rolled and tutted in every scene

Sugar tries to undermine them for a cheap
Laugh in all the boardroom scenes

Then suddenly in the final, they suddenly seem credible

Last year he invested in two as they were both brilliant apparently

The finalists last year were the woman with the business selling matching people and dog pajamas and a dessert shop. I'm pretty certain it was only the dessert shop that got the money.

I'll need to get a new thread opened for the final! I'll pop back and link in a mo!

I have a feeling he may go for Rochelle... Marnie does seem the obvious winner though.

I noticed on Marnies business instagram page that it's not been open for long, so wonder if that's a telling sign?

Thanks @RicciardoPerez 😊
See you there!

In the first episode, when Marnie and Emma were bickering the whole time, I thought Marnie would never make the final - now I'm cheering her on for the win 🏆
