@AddictedToBooks, that is awful. As a just retired teacher, I can’t imagine deliberately hitting a child at school or inflicting painful punishments like that.

They really were vile - it mainly seemed to be 3 female teachers who were close friends with each other and all had classrooms next to each other, who were like that. Sadly they were also the ones who taught the youngest primary school children. There was a 4th teacher (who was close to Mrs Cameron) who worked out in a portakabin classroom who also believed in smacking children.
The strangest thing is, the headteacher himself, was absolutely lovely with children and I'm not sure why he never confronted these teachers as parents were often complaining and apparently Mrs Cameron and Mrs Martin were still physically abusing children after I left that school in 1988.
The day when I got dragged across the classroom by my hair, my mum found out what had happened because my hair was a mess (she used to always tie it in a neat ponytail for school) and my mum was livid (especially as I'd just been in hospital for an operation on my eyes and had actually asked that I could be sat closer to the board) but in those days, parents often complained to the teacher concerned directly, who would spin their own version of the story and often stare down at the pupil with a "look" - I saw a thread today about bullying nurses and someone said that she believed that some nurses who are deliberately nasty chose a profession where they could bully the vulnerable and I honestly think that the 3 worst teachers were definitely in that category.
The teacher in the portakabin didn't often smack - she would give warnings before hand and a chance to sit down, be quiet, complete work or whatever she was irritated about.
It was a horrible culture and you're right - I could never even contemplate deliberately inflicting anxiety, fear or pain on any child (or anyone or anything if I'm honest).
At school when I was in those teacher's classes, I would be so nervous that I'd actually shake and feel sick. I would love to face these "ladies" now,

I was caned twice at secondary school just prior to the ban. First time was for sticking my tongue out at the head teacher. Second time was for internal truancy, where due to a desperately unhappy home life (was removed by social services a few weeks later), I couldn’t face going to my lesson so stayed in the toilets while I tried to sort myself out.

When you received a caning, your name was wrote in the punishment book. I was such a swot that my form tutor nearly passed out with shock when he saw my name in there!

I’m glad corporal punishment was banned as I don’t think it achieved anything other than making children unhappy!

I remember it being discussed on John craven, s newsround I can see the picture now a girls hand being held out getting the cane
We were always threatened with the ruler at primary school ,not sure what they thought it achieved.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Caroline to be asking Sheila to have Jessica as she’s the same age as Claire?!

theblackradiator · 25/08/2025 18:13

I must have missed a couple of episodes, how has it come about that the Rodgers have moved into the Grants old house and where have the new family just appeared from that are living in the Rodgers old house? I thought the Rodgers had only just got a mortgage for there house?

Frank went to a house auction, ( not sure if he intended to buy the grants house) and got into a bit of a bidding with Dr choi ,and must of put in the highest bid ,he then got Dr choi ti buy his house ,not sure of the legalities it wss all brushed over .

bigTillyMint · 25/08/2025 18:25

I’m not even up to there yet!
Just watching Rod and Tommy in the gym - the equipment looks so ancient and squeaky 🤣

theblackradiator · 25/08/2025 18:31

@x2boys Thank you. That must've been one of the episodes I missed because I had fallen asleep!

I think it's likely due to Caroline 'knowing' Chrissy due to them buying the house off them. She hadn't met or gotten to know the other neighbours yet due to just moving in.

x2boys · 25/08/2025 22:03

I know the episodes are quite mundane but I like seeing that I think sammie Rogers would have been about a year older than me bevsuse I took my GCSE,s in 1990 but seeing her navigate her first relationship and exams brings it all back.

Oh the memories
The Choi’s curtains - we had the same in our first flat .
Loving Kirsty’s fashion choice for the ill fated Blackpool trip .Floral two piece & boots !
Caroline Choi in vintage Laura Ashley I think .
Sue’s maternity wear coupled with the standard court shoes
It’s like a portal into the 1980s just love it !
I was an avid fan and religiously watched it as a teen and later at uni (Liverpool of course ) . It’s about this point I started work and met my now husband so didnt watch it for a few years .
Returned to it in the baby years around 92 then dropped off again in about 1996 work & life got busier . Really enjoyed these episodes before it starts to get a bit silly if I remember correctly .

Latesummersunset · 26/08/2025 13:05

Has everyone heard that Brookside is coming back as a one off crossover episode with Hollyoaks?

They’ll be filming on the street and inside two of the houses.

Hope that Sheila and Billy are still together.

If anyone is on Facebook, there’s a Brookside close page that shows clips from the filming.
