Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

I was a student in Liverpool between 1980 and 1983. We actually went up to the set of Brookside and had a nosy round, lots of security. The brook in the name is the river alt I seem to recall, we sampled it (biologists) and it was virtually dead at that point.

I got my first proper job in 1983, as a police officer, I was paid around £6000 per year.

I feel old. Loving the nostalgia!

According to one calculator it’s about 82k in modern terms. According to another site, an average salary was about 10k but bear in mind that Liverpool was badly impacted by recession at that time so the salaries were probably lower there and the housing market depressed. The interest rate was also 14%.

82k now? Bargain!
I'm amazed you could get that for 20k then, though I do remember is moving in 1980 and getting a ' 'naice' 4 bed detached for 42k so sounds about right.

I had forgotten the Sheila being pregnant storyline, so am enjoying reliving that.

VanillaImpulse · 27/09/2023 22:52

Sheila and Bobby talking about the statistics of women over 40 having a "handicapped" (their words) child was 26%!

NCTDN · 28/09/2023 09:43

Two women early in their pregnancy but wearing huge smock dresses!

CaptainBatEars · 06/10/2023 20:04

I'm still watching but work & life generally means I'm still quite a way behind. We've reached the point where I was watching back in the 80s now which is why I don't remember Alan being in the bungalow. My mum was a similar vintage to Sheila and pregnant at the same time so started watching it out of interest. I am roughly the same age as Damon so it was great to see our family dynamic reflected on screen. There weren't many older mothers being shown on TV at the time.

Pauline Fowler having Martin in her 40s the following year was the reason we started watching 'Enders too!

VQ1970 · 11/10/2023 15:27

I watched Brookside from the very beginning and saw it through to the end. There are lots of events I remember but a few details I can't remember. It's interesting to see Barry on the fringes of his dodgy deals and starting to get involved with Tommy McCardle and knowing how big of a villain Barry becomes.

I'm also enjoying the family dynamics of the Grants and how Bobby tries to exert his authority as head of the family but Sheila pushing back occasionally.

It's great seeing the fashions, especially Karen as I'd have been wearing similar!

bigTillyMint · 11/10/2023 18:54

Was anyone else shocked that Marie is only 35 and by Damon’s shorts in the episode where Ducksie comes over to get him on a double date? 🤣

ComeOnThenFanny · 11/10/2023 20:48

Marie is only 35?? Sweet baby jesus.

I was horrified at the episode where Sheila had to go to hospital after the accident to check the baby - and the doctor took Bobby outside to talk about the amniocentesis as if Sheila didn't have bodily autonomy Hmm
I thought when I was growing up in the 80s that things were pretty forward thinking, but they weren't really.

bigTillyMint · 11/10/2023 20:57

@ComeOnThenFanny, I’m sure that’s what Michelle said when they were talking about her moving out with Terry - she looks so much older!

I thought she was about 45! I wonder how old George is, I thought he was about that age as well. I'm just catching up with a couple of this week's episodes before bed, I wish they would put more on than five episodes a week.

Snozzlemaid · 12/10/2023 10:25

Michelle's new hairdo! 😂

Snozzlemaid · 12/10/2023 12:50

It's one I sincerely hope never becomes fashionable again

NCTDN · 12/10/2023 13:25

I didn't even recognise her!

NCTDN · 12/10/2023 13:26

I thought that the twins were going to boarding school, but George didn't pick them up after their first day?

Snozzlemaid · 12/10/2023 18:54

I think they changed their mind as they need the money now for George's solicitor fees

I have just watched episode 186 and can confirm that this is what Michelle said! I was truly shocked!!

Sinbad!

Is he in it permanently from now on?

I don't know. But he is looking very young! Almost baby faced.

NCTDN · 20/10/2023 21:25

Can't imagine him ever looking that young!

Leeds2 · 20/10/2023 22:40

He was a lot slimmer than I remember him too.

ComeOnThenFanny · 21/10/2023 08:31

I don't even remember him having hair!

Bingowingo · 21/10/2023 13:11

Did you spot the boy in the benefit office queue with Damon. Happy Valley, Sarah Lancashire characters BIL?

Gordon’s female friend - I recognise from Grange Hill. Who was she? Done an internet search but can’t find!
