Charity is an amazing woman. All the bad blood between them two in the past and when the whole family turned against chas, she was the only one to stand by her. Misplaced loyalty, yes. But that's the kind of friend we should all have.

My favourite Emmerdale moment for weeks was Bear shouting at Chas tonight. He was the voice of that nation in that scene. And looks like he's the one that has got through to Chas and made her realise how awful she's been.

He should have mentioned her shit cardigans though. No wonder Paddy has gone AWOL faced with them every day.

Out if boredom, I was looking through the dingle family tree, I was curious how many fitted. Anyway there is already a caleb. Mandys father and brother to Zak and shadrach. So is new caleb Caleb Dingles son? Has faith cheated with two of shadrachs brothers? It also says shadrach is Daniels godfather. I can't remember him, I was young and only remember bits from when my parents watched it but surely the vicor and his wife would not be close with the kind of man chas and cain described?

It also says mandy was married to butch. Who is her cousin...

Mandy and Butch's wedding was an " arranged " marriage.
She was with Paddy at the time but Paddy's mum paid Mandy to marry Butch so she couldn't marry Paddy.
The Dingle Family has a big money issue at the time.

I think they needed the money to buy the house from Tate Estates or something.

Poor Butch was crazy about Mandy and found it really hard to accept it was never going to be a proper marriage.

He then went on and married Emily ( who then went on to marry Paddy !)
on his death bed.

So to date, Paddy has married the widow of his ex-wife’s ex-husband/cousin, before cheating on her with his best friend’s mother-in-law - his best friend also being a cousin to both his first wife and, by marriage, his second. Paddy then went on to marry said best friend’s ex, while she was pregnant with friend’s child. After divorcing his third wife, he married another cousin of his first wife, while his third wife reunited with and married his best friend, who is of course also the cousin of his fourth wife.

Just the average love life of a rural vet really.

@bizzey yes, I read further after I posted. Also read paddy cheated on Emily with viv, I know he cheated on Rhona as it was mentioned. Not good Padster. Also read how he and Emily originally fostered Debbie. I vaguely remember Sarah being born.

The scriptwriters have performed something of a reversion of Shadrach in recent years. When he was in it he was portrayed as a bit of an old rogue - drank too much and always on the fiddle, but largely harmless. The backstory at the time was that he’d been violent to Cain when he was young (possibly having suspected he wasn’t really his) but doted on Chas, which added to Cain’s resentment. He hadn’t been particularly close to Laurel and Ashley until Daniel/Arthur was born, but he got trapped in the church with Laurel when she went into labour and they bonded.

When he died he was very much mourned by the Dingles (it may have been when Cain was out of the show for a couple of years). However, the scripts have reverted to the vile drunken bully version of Shadrach, with Chas seemingly agreeing with this - probably to make Faith a more sympathetic character.

Laurel and Shadrach were close as they had a bond with both being alcoholics. And they had their shared experience of being trapped together. Shadrach has only been rewritten as an abuser in recent years. When Shadrach was in Emmerdale he was a bit of a drunken loveable rogue, definitely not the nasty wife and child beater he has now become.

I can't recall shadrach at all, it may have been a period when my parents stopped watching or after I got a PlayStation but I knew from posts on these threads that his portrayal has been rewritten. Which I can't agree with. The thought that faith never mentioned caleb at all when she knew she was dying isn't normal. She seemed determined to right all her wrongs, and with shadrach gone, there was no need to keep caleb secret. She could have mentioned him before her illness even. The name likely was chosen by faith, it's biblical and also starts with a C like her two others, so have the writers forgotten mandys dad?

Having read the above several posts explaining the most complicated family tree ever it makes me realize that despite being an Emmer fan for decades I know very little re who is related to who but surely there is a hint of incest lurking there? No wonder the whole bliddy lot of them are warped!

Characters I have swapped my affinity for over the years:

Bob (naughty nylons) couldn't stand him then liked him then he bored me now he's quite annoying but can't help it still like him, he's a fab actor

Charity disliked her for years but now she's up there at the top of my list of excellent characters and she has real charisma which makes her name rather fitting.

Paddy sorry never liked him and despite his current anguish he leaves me cold

Marlon very much the same but his stroke period was extremely emotional and he played it brilliantly.

Laurel started as the loopy woman in silly outfits but they've turned her into a totally different character which unfortunately I don't find appealing.

Lydia similar to Laurel with her bird themed everything but that's been shelved and she's turned sensible and a solid support for Sam. I like her.

Sam (why does a farming community have to have a token dopey man?) all I will say is his real life voice and accent are the posher end of posh and he's very good at playing the dodo.

I was looking at Malone's murder again in anticipation of Caleb being an undercover cop and can't remember what happened to the gun. I was sure Cain told Harriet he buried it somewhere on the farm. Does anyone remember for definite?

There was a whole other palaver about Will's gun which Cain ended up shooting Nate with and hid in a car in the scrapyard that was sent to be crushed. The bullet had gang markings (sure Jan) so the cops knew it had been used in three other murders. Malone was mad to get his hands on it and stitch Cain up.

Oh @JaneJeffer YES! Harriet asked Cain to dispose of the gun that killed Malone. Maybe that's why Malone is popping up on the Cadburys advert as the whole Malone death is about to be revisited.

How the police would know about any of this stuff is a mystery. I think they found Harriet's 5-year diary when they were packing up her belongings from her desk. Here's some extracts (dates are approximate only):
