One of the recent shows in the slate of new dramas is also Maternal, a six-part medical drama that centres on three women who are not only juggling their lives as new mothers, but also the post-pandemic world of frontline medicine.

We follow Maryam, a paediatric registrar, Catherine, a general and trauma Surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, who are played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray), Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary) respectively. It's a stellar cast with an important plot line.

Maternal tells the stories of the three leading doctors as they each attempt to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic frontline medicine with their lives as new mothers. It's a series concerned with motherhood, as much as it is about the NHS and the intense demands of working in it.

According to the synopsis: "Maternal explores working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

Imagine it's strictly against uniform and h&s policy

Joram86 · 19/01/2023 12:31

I watched this tonight. Loved it. Particularly the comment about how easy it is for men to advance when they have a wife.

I feel sorry for the actor that plays Mr Cavendish (Kelly from Mum husband) as he always plays a selfish twat husband who 9/10 can’t keep it zipped 😂. He’s the twat husband in motherland, the twat husband in this and the year husband in Trying on Apple TV. Literally the same character each time 🤣

Do you think he might be typecast now ? 😀

SydneyCarton · 19/01/2023 13:24

I read the Guardian review of this and thought I'd give it a go, really liked the first episode despite being constantly interrupted by a wide-awake four-year-old (life imitating art!). Oliver Chris (TH, twat husband) looked very different, I wouldn't have known it was him if I hadn't seen his name in the review. I really hope there's a showdown between Helen and Louise at some point. Are she and TH still sleeping together? She looked very smug and flirty with him, but I assumed he had finished things if he's trying to get back with his wife (naïve!)

LadyEloise1 · 19/01/2023 14:17

No ITV here. No doubt Virgin 1 will show it in a few months time. Will watch it then.
Thanks for the heads up @Blondeshavemorefun

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/01/2023 15:20

Sorry @LadyEloise1 hopefully soon

yes hopefully twat husband TH 😂 isn’t still sleeping with young junior

I'm another who watched this all in one go yesterday until 1.30 am. Absolutely loved it. The prof. reminded me of one i had dealings with years ago.

Joram86 · 23/01/2023 13:27

Oh well I’ll survive 🤣🤣

3 month old baby who will only contact nap forced me into it 🙈🙈🙈

daffodilandtulip · 23/01/2023 13:40

Loving it! Great mix of life and medical. Looking forward to tonight.

mum2jakie · 23/01/2023 17:16

Caught up with the first episode today. What a fantastic cast! Looking forward to the next episode. First time I've seen 'Kelly' from Mum playing a serious role.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2023 17:21

Yes good to see Kelly not a blonde dizzhead

Oh nice one Lars 🙄

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2023 21:17

Plus why is the baby in the baby hold car seat the wrong way

Meant to be backwards facing at her age and in that type of car seat

SydneyCarton · 23/01/2023 21:21

Catherine really does need to work on those communication skills, doesn’t she?

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2023 22:27

Wow. Thought e2 was really good

I recognised Brigitte. Not sure from where. I don't watch emerdale

I felt for maz having that that case sent to a tribunal

You all said she did ask her student doc to do what she is accused of not doing

Also I didn't know her kids were adopted . So she just back after adoption leave of 2yrs as guess had one adoption after another

Or the youngest is only adopted ?

She doesn't want a 3 imo - she wants her life and career back but then it's a girl

And I get she wants a girl

Maybe her husband should take 6mths off adoption leave

Catherine took mars ans Brigette taking her daughter to Sweden very calmly

And assume also she didn't know kats was married so should have said that to her when wife blamed her

Lara was at fault

He knew he was married and cheating

Plus paternity - will it be other doctor baby (suppliers cupboard and who sent her patient home)

Baby looks too pale to be Lars

And Helen. Worn out. Didn't reliese they had 3 kids / where was the 3in the car ?

I'm loving this

Really hope for a s2&3&4 😂
