One of the recent shows in the slate of new dramas is also Maternal, a six-part medical drama that centres on three women who are not only juggling their lives as new mothers, but also the post-pandemic world of frontline medicine.

We follow Maryam, a paediatric registrar, Catherine, a general and trauma Surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, who are played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray), Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary) respectively. It's a stellar cast with an important plot line.

Maternal tells the stories of the three leading doctors as they each attempt to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic frontline medicine with their lives as new mothers. It's a series concerned with motherhood, as much as it is about the NHS and the intense demands of working in it.

According to the synopsis: "Maternal explores working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

by the end of ep 1 I’d forgotten whether or not maryam did ask the junior dr to call microbiology or if she said she would? Or was it unclear?

I don't think she did

She meant to but didn't

I could have sworn she did?
I loved the witty script. Not do much the title because it implies it's a maternity drama rather than a medical soap. It's more Grey's than Call the Midwife.

Coffeecreme · 18/01/2023 04:57

i thought she did say it

Coffeecreme · 18/01/2023 04:58

also feel sorry for the husband,
his acting work seems to be the husband, although so far he gets more of a say in this one

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/01/2023 05:09

Oh. Did she

Polgara2 · 18/01/2023 05:23

I thought she asked him as well 🤔

Joram86 · 18/01/2023 06:20

I think she did too

it literally says TV pace in the title, when would you consider it acceptable to discuss what happened in the already aired episode? once you’ve had a chance to watch it I presume? 😆

@Blondeshavemorefun has kindly explained this.

I saw No Spoilers in the title and didn't know what TV paced was, not having been on this before, but loved the programme.

I thought it was really good but the sex in the cupboard scene was really stupid. Anyone can get in with a pass and if someone caught them they would lose their jobs surely??? I don't know maybe not but seemed really silly. Also when the surgeon lady told that guy he was a father his reaction seemed pretty muted considering the massive news she just dumped on him. It was kind of odd.

I think you'd be surprised what goes on !

I've binged it all and loved it so will refrain from posting much so I don't accidentally spill anything.

Episode 1 though I thought the same about Simon from the inbetweeners :D

goyuwer · 18/01/2023 09:16

I couldn't warm to Lara Pulver in the split and haven't warmed to her so far in this. Interested to see if she ends up with her real life husband in this or not.

caramac04 · 18/01/2023 09:41

Loved the first episode, never got to have sex in the linen cupboard when I worked on the wards unfortunately.
I thought she said ‘…and we’ll call microbiology’ as she glanced at junior dr which implied to me that he should call and relay results to her. I think he either missed the nuance or is still so inexperienced it needed spelling out to him.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a similar series please?

Rosecoffeecup · 18/01/2023 14:22

She definitley did say about the antibiotics, but I think it was a general "we will do X" said to the parents and the male junior, rather than actually telling him to do it

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/01/2023 14:33

Just discovered this. I'm on episode 2. Really enjoyed number 1, I love touches like expressing breast milk and the trust induction stuff was alarmingly accurate.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 18/01/2023 14:39

Agree that Maz is at fault over the antibiotics, she said "we" and then although the specifically told him to do the bloodsand mark as urgent she didn't delegate or clarify who was responsible for calling micro. You'd like to think that someone would take some initiative but human factors and stuff like that is a huge issue in medicine.

Supertillypops · 18/01/2023 22:21

Just finished episode 6. Brilliant.

Fiddlersgreen · 18/01/2023 23:13

Where are you seeing the extra episodes please?

NotEnoughTime · 18/01/2023 23:47

ITVX Fiddlersgreen

I'm on the last episode now-have really enjoyed it.

The spoiler thread is here for those who watch ahead.

opencheese · 19/01/2023 08:11

She definitely did tell him to call
Microbiology.

The ages seem realistic. They're doctors. The surgeon is older. Early 40s? Makes sense the pregnancy was her last chance

Why was she wearing stilettos in am early scene? Nobody wheres those anymore. Least of all to a hospital. Even clerical staff

As a single parent/surgeon, she would have hired a nanny before returning to work. Not winging it week by week

The cupboard scene was rubbish.

opencheese · 19/01/2023 08:11

Otherwise, great program

Izzy24 · 19/01/2023 09:06

It’s good.

But too close to the mark for me to watch any more.

And the sex in the stores 🙄🙄

opencheese · 19/01/2023 09:25

I wonder if real life doctors have nurseries or hire a nanny? Especially if they have 3 kiddies
