One of the recent shows in the slate of new dramas is also Maternal, a six-part medical drama that centres on three women who are not only juggling their lives as new mothers, but also the post-pandemic world of frontline medicine.

We follow Maryam, a paediatric registrar, Catherine, a general and trauma Surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, who are played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray), Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary) respectively. It's a stellar cast with an important plot line.

Maternal tells the stories of the three leading doctors as they each attempt to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic frontline medicine with their lives as new mothers. It's a series concerned with motherhood, as much as it is about the NHS and the intense demands of working in it.

According to the synopsis: "Maternal explores working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

That is a shame .
I really enjoyed it .Maybe the actors didn't want to do another series ?

It had so much potential .

@Blondeshavemorefun to be fair if you hadn't have started a thread about it I would have missed it .
Maybe it wasn't well publicised or pushed .

So many programs are started without giving them time to gain interest.

Yes I meant ITVx (which I know was just ITV hub rebranded, but not everyone has that and hence the new channel campaign, I’m assuming?) which is where people would go for catch up or to binge a series a la Netflix so it would get more recommendations from there. It was really binge-worthy, I couldn’t have watched it at weekly pace. There’s now no point anyone watching the box set on ITVx if it’s there’s not going to be another series 🤷‍♀️

I thought this was one of the best series I've seen in ages so really disappointed that they aren't doing another series. There was so much potential for more stories with a fantastic cast.

I lived it too. Well scripted when you think of all the ludicrous dramas and police procedurals that get renewed, makes no sense. I know the viewing figures were low but was it marketed well? i think it would do well on a streamer like Netflix.

Such a disappointment. It was brilliant. On the other hand it was a great ending and another series risks trying too hard and trying to "fix" things for everyone.

Well I think they needed some things fixing!
I know it had some light moments but it was very heavy on the whole. So think it would have benefited from some fixing

It was a shame but I avoided it at first because of the title. Made me think it was going to be some fluffy, empty, mumfest and I only ended up watching the first episode on catch-up because I couldn't find anything else. Recomended it to my work coleeaugues non of who ad watched it also really enjoyed it. Should have let it go for another series as I think it was a 'grower'.

I think the title would have also put off half the population.

Be nice if they could just do a Christmas special or something.

Alison could get pregnant,have baby and lose her ghost seeing powers.

Baby could whack themselves with a rattle/toy and develop ghost seeing powers !

Would finish with baby seemingly laughing and gurgling to nothing ....but the ghosts are there making baby 😂.

Just found out that another series of a program that I enjoyed is not going for another series as well!
