One of the recent shows in the slate of new dramas is also Maternal, a six-part medical drama that centres on three women who are not only juggling their lives as new mothers, but also the post-pandemic world of frontline medicine.

We follow Maryam, a paediatric registrar, Catherine, a general and trauma Surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, who are played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray), Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary) respectively. It's a stellar cast with an important plot line.

Maternal tells the stories of the three leading doctors as they each attempt to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic frontline medicine with their lives as new mothers. It's a series concerned with motherhood, as much as it is about the NHS and the intense demands of working in it.

According to the synopsis: "Maternal explores working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

The entire MN viewership must have been shrieking "Don't sign it!" when Lars produced the Swedish document.

KrasiTime · 01/02/2023 06:17

Signing that document will come back to bite her.

Polgara2 · 01/02/2023 06:36

Yes it will I don't trust Lars

FrenchandSaunders · 01/02/2023 17:24

I thought Lars had other children with his wife? If not then maybe she can’t have them, hence the acceptance of Ellis

mum2jakie · 01/02/2023 17:47

No they were talking about needing to go back to Sweden as they have children of their own to look after

Snugglepiggy · 01/02/2023 19:13

I wasn't going to bother with this but ended up binge watching after reading comments on here.I absolutely loved it.The three leads were all superb and hope they make another series at least so we can see how their careers and lives progress.

Is Helen ever going to get to have fun? I can’t think of one nice thing that’s happened to her so far Hmm

LavenderHillMob · 06/02/2023 21:58

Very possibly Smile

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/02/2023 06:53

About bloody time 🤣. She really was having the night shift from hell. I assume the next row between her and Guy will be her wanting her nephew to live with them.

Nice to see Maz getting her confidence back. I even warmed up to Jack in this episode, he seemed a lot kinder.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/02/2023 10:57

Awww loved last nights

Amazing sticking a finger in a heart gets it pumping again or the finger in the leg

Helen deserves a bit of fun and sex

Not frigid with jack

Max dancing was good

Still think lars might not be Ellis dad but assume done dna

And baby is jacks

Only 2 left 🥲

Had to google jack as recognises him but wasn't sure why

He played Ravi in mistress's

That was a fab series

I'm enjoying this so much! I just love it-really hope they make another series. Love that the two surgeons are married irl 😂

FrenchandSaunders · 08/02/2023 07:59

I can’t understand why Catherine is allowing them to swan off with the baby like that. And the comments they make about what she wears/does, it’s outrageous. She might not get her back.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2023 14:44

I think she's feels isn't coping and needs to work longer hours to be a consultant

Her mum isn't any help

Yes I know gp don't have to be

I feel like this is better researched than the long standing Casualty 🤣

I used to be a nurse (but also a manager with on calls and a bleep) and the pressure, the workload, the bleeps, the stress, the snide comments but also the camaraderie ... not only does it feel accurate, but I'm feeling it like I did for myself!

Xmasbaby11 · 08/02/2023 23:20

I love it! Hospital atmosphere feels realistically tense. I’m finding it hard to warm to Catherine though and find it hard to believe anyone would hand their baby over like that.

purpleme12 · 08/02/2023 23:20

I'm really disappointed that she let them take the baby

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2023 13:51

I don't think she felt she had much choice

He's had dad

He's showing can have /giver her time money and a mum figure

Ans yes much more real than casualty

Yes you have the personal life but intwinned with the work

Plus hubby and wife working together

And calling him when on call and not answering and drinking

What happened if another doctor needed him

She felt she couldn't call him as hubby and her sister

Surely she’d have a nanny - and ask Lars for maintenance? Just seems unbelievable to hand over the baby to live in another country.

SydneyCarton · 09/02/2023 19:43

I think the baby is only going to Sweden for a few days, not permanently.

purpleme12 · 09/02/2023 19:49

Yes only few days.
Although it's very ominous...

mum2jakie · 09/02/2023 19:58

It's a very long way to take a little baby for just a few days! And she's going to have a fair old logistical issue if they decide not to bring the baby back to her as planned.

Loved Maz having her moment of release in the kitchen. I used to dance around like that to Chumbawumba to burn off stress!

I think she was struggling with childcare

She has a lovely flat so huge mortgage

Over £1300 for nursery a month

Where Sweden was £180? Was that right ? R.E.M. it was sooooooooo cheap
