One of the recent shows in the slate of new dramas is also Maternal, a six-part medical drama that centres on three women who are not only juggling their lives as new mothers, but also the post-pandemic world of frontline medicine.

We follow Maryam, a paediatric registrar, Catherine, a general and trauma Surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, who are played by Parminder Nagra (DI Ray), Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (King Gary) respectively. It's a stellar cast with an important plot line.

Maternal tells the stories of the three leading doctors as they each attempt to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in post-pandemic frontline medicine with their lives as new mothers. It's a series concerned with motherhood, as much as it is about the NHS and the intense demands of working in it.

According to the synopsis: "Maternal explores working motherhood with wit, warmth and humour and offers a unique perspective on our beloved, overstretched NHS, and the people who hold it together. Sometimes."

And as overworked she didn't reliese her email didn't send to book day off

Guessing a temp nanny is out of the question

Wouid be easier if Elis is jacks so can share the care in same country

Yes-it's just obvious!

With his new job he could afford to pay for childcare couldn't he?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/02/2023 21:01

I dislike Catherine so much I was glad she didn't get the job😊

The bit at the start that switched back and forward between Catherine desperately begging for a few minutes of the professor's time and Jack playing a round of golf with the professor was utterly relatable. Catherine and I wouldn't have got on in real life, she's have considered me somewhere beneath the dirt on the soles of her shoes (if I relate to any of the docs in the show, it's Tessa) but I really felt for her at that point.

XanaduKira · 15/02/2023 23:16

I felt for her too @KohlaParasaurus

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 16/02/2023 07:03

I felt for Catherine too, it did show how much harder it is for women to get a look in at times. However, regarding the job itself, based on what evidence we had, Catherine had not shown herself to be good with people and didn't have that evidence that she could be a good manager and I think that's important. I think it illustrated the trap that still exists that as women there is that perception that we need to act like men to get to the top but in doing so e are than perceived as difficult, abrupt etc.

Crumpetdisappointment · 16/02/2023 07:29

i like catherine but hated her professor,
i think regarding her hobby, she should have lied and said she played golf!

daffodilandtulip · 16/02/2023 07:40

Definitely feeling the pain of being a single parent with sick children and no childcare! So sad, and so realistic, that women are still forced out of the picture because they are women. I agree with the clip in the adverts - one makes you better at the other.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2023 08:33

Yes the difference between men playing golf and chatting /bonding

And a single mum with not many hobbies due to being a parent with no father support

And more I think about it

Guy will have to be ok

Or else Helen will take the strain of guy taking his life due to losing his job /her sleeping with jack

Where it was his choice to drink - have an affair - lose his job and take tablets

Losing him to suicide will make her feel it was her fault

Where it was his choices which led him to do that

Tho weird about the letter

I would have opened it and assumed he had left the house due to what she said

She assumed the worst and ran upstairs

Unless she was going to see if clothes had gone before reading the letter

I felt for the young doctor that Guy had an affair with too. I'm imagining him chasing and flattering her for weeks to get her into bed with him and promising her a glorious future together, then afterwards when she became inconvenient he was all, "You? You're nothing."

purpleme12 · 16/02/2023 08:58

Mmmm

SydneyCarton · 16/02/2023 09:25

Guy really is a selfish prick, isn’t he? I’m struggling to see any redeeming qualities in him. The only reason I hope he doesn’t die is because it would make Helen’s life even worse.

I assume the premature baby Maz delivered is the one they’re talking about adopting. Did the mum recognise her when she shouted “You took him away from me!”, referring to her other son?

I think my DS has the same blue dinosaur pyjamas as Maz’s son 🤣

purpleme12 · 16/02/2023 10:27

I don't think she recognised her. I think she's lashing out cos they're taking her away from her in general

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2023 11:10

I thought Layla recognised her /knew who she was

Went back to the house & found Guy in bed unresponsive after taking an overdose.

Thanks ! oh wow is he dead?

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2023 15:23

I'm hoping not as they will push Helen over the edge

I thought Layla recognised her /knew who she was

No I thought she was just lashing out generally and it just happened to be a coincidence that Maz was the woman who adopted her first child.

I'm hopeful that Guy will pull through. Got to be a turning point for him. I also jumped to the same conclusion that Helen did when she saw the letter with her name on it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2023 20:07

How word. Cos I would have said it was a I've left you letter

Just goes to prove they we all have different views on what we watch the same

SapatSea · 18/02/2023 19:06

I assumed "I've left" letter too.

I think they're trying to show why he is being a prick though. Helen clearly knows he's not a bad person or she'd have kicked him out by now.

Is tonight the last one?

purpleme12 · 20/02/2023 19:20

Yes

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/02/2023 19:21
