Good theory @Wisterical (also horrible theory) but I could see that happening

LadyEloise1 · 08/01/2023 18:11

I agree, good theory @Wisterical

Wisterical · 08/01/2023 18:13

Thanks @JaneJeffer, I've been puzzling it over way too much! Also, the ex-husband refused to have anything at all to do with Ryan for years didn't he? Such an extreme reaction makes me suspect huge guilt or simply trying to deny to himself that he did what he did. Whatever, I don't like him.

Foxyy · 08/01/2023 18:16

I think it's odd how Catherine has mentioned a few times that she worries Ryan may be a wrong un like his Dad, but Becky was off the rails and a drug user and Clare is an recovering addict so the Cawood genes don't seem overly great either. Granted none of them have abducted or murdered police officers but even so.

Wisterical · 08/01/2023 18:34

@Foxyy but the whole premise of 'Happy' Valley is that it's an area completely fucked over by drugs so aren't Becky and Clare simply victims of growing up in that place? (tho' possibly abuse too re Becky). I know TLR had an appalling childhood with an addict mother but he's a total psychopath, rather than an addict.

I think the nature/nurture issue is brilliantly woven into Happy Valley.

The excessive use of "fuck/fucking" by Catherine strikes me as unusual. And the forgetfulness - both symptoms of early onset Alzheimer's/Dementia.

I hope I'm wrong.

Having worked in a police station I'd say the use of fuck/fucking is far more excessive with real police officers. Maybe I was just unlucky.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/01/2023 19:21

there is NO WAY Catherine would have let the injunction lapse

To me, this was the least credible part of the episode. Catherine would NEVER have let it lapse - not in 1,000,000 years.

I have a theory...
Catherine's ex-husband is actually Ryan's father. He was abusing their daughter, hence her going 'off-the-rails' and her distress at being pregnant and suicide after Ryan's birth.

That's interesting @Wisterical . . especially, as you say, coupled with the heartbreaking incest line in the second series.

<smell of burning rubber as the Viper thinks really, really hard>

I know a few police officers, too, and I would agree with this, plus one is overly fond of the "kh^nt" word.

(Pardon me - it's the most horrible word and I hate to use it.)

I think in a stressful environment like that, it is a way of dissipating tension and then you just get into the way of it.

The only people I have known who swear worse/more were the privately educated lasses I met at uni.

TottersBlankly · 08/01/2023 19:38

Interesting possibility, @Wisterical - though the official ‘little man’ role is taken by the pharmacist this time. It’s not a conclusion I’d like, as it would call Catherine’s judgement into serious question. She likes her ex husband - we wouldn’t want to see her so badly fooled. Or for her to spend the rest of her life wondering why she didn’t notice such a terrible thing going on in her own home.

Have to laugh about the Cawood genes. (I can, as it’s fiction.)

Wisterical · 08/01/2023 20:15

@TottersBlankly good point re pharmacist. Damn. Back to the drawing board for the next 45 minutes (but not ready to give up my theory just yet ...)

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2023 20:23

I def think there is a chance Tommy isn’t Ryan’s dad

tho wouid hate Ryan’s dad to be his grandad as well 🙀🥲

just listened to Shrine e1

jaicobain · 08/01/2023 20:29

Omg, the ‘little man’ role! Brilliant. Each series has consisted of a pathetic, snivering little weasle of a man that ends up in a world of shit due to his own actions. I’d never made that connection.

jaicobain · 08/01/2023 20:32

I don’t think it will happen but I would quite like it to turn out that Ryan isn’t TLR’s for the pure relief and closure it would give Catherine. Providing of course that Ryan’s real father slept with Becky consensually.

dapsnotplimsolls · 08/01/2023 20:50

I really hope it's not Claire :(

benfoldsfivefan · 08/01/2023 20:59

In a way, it's too obvious it will be Clare. But I think it will be.

HRTQueen · 08/01/2023 21:00

How Do all

I think it’s Clair she is a busy body we have seen this throughout the series

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2023 21:02

OMFG

Although we did guess!

colouringindoors · 08/01/2023 21:02

AutisticLegoLover · 08/01/2023 21:04

Wait for me, I'm about to tune in on iplayer! It's got off to an explosive start I gather!

colouringindoors · 08/01/2023 21:04

Why TF Would her sister do this, knowing everything....?

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2023 21:05

Although I'd not realised that Clare & Neil don't like with Catherine anymore, which makes it easier...
