I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

i do not like the main actress there is simply nothing endearing about her

Passportpondery · 23/12/2022 22:15

Same! Thought it was terribly done.

Glassofwhatever · 23/12/2022 22:16

I loved it

Izadrennan · 23/12/2022 22:16

I know, it was very depressing for Christmas Special, i love motherland but think they got this wrong

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 23/12/2022 22:16

It was different but I still enjoyed it. Lucy Punch was fantastic. Comedy with sad moments is very very hard to get right. Off the top of my head, only The Royle Family & Only Fools ever got it right.

Cocolapew · 23/12/2022 22:17

I loved it

Fenty1 · 23/12/2022 22:17

It has got some really good reviews but it just wasn't good old Motherland to me!

Has anyone noticed Julia has the same body language as the grinch? Especially in her onesie!
Super disappointing, really sad but not really funny.
And Meg almost seemed a different person? It was like the actress had forgotten how to play the character but I wondered whether it was intentional, after the cancer storyline?

biddyboo · 23/12/2022 22:19

I really enjoyed it too. To the pp, Julia isn't supposed to be likeable!

zzzexhaustedzzz · 23/12/2022 22:20

Loved it!! But er.. I also love Afterlife etc

BlueDuckBlue · 23/12/2022 22:21

I too was looking forward to it but it was so sad 😞

Iliveditwizbit · 23/12/2022 22:23

Lucy Punch is brilliant , and hilarious.

ArticSaviour · 23/12/2022 22:23

I really liked it

interstatelovesong · 23/12/2022 22:24

I was a bit disappointed too! Especially after how great the last Xmas special was 😞

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 22:26

It was brilliant & I laughed out loud more than once.
Oliver Chris yet again an understated joy, and Lucy Punch stole the show.

Fenty1 · 23/12/2022 22:26

Maybe they realised they couldn't outdo last year's Xmas special so went down a new route. And they are all brilliant actors- was just really hoping for a few laughs 😃

I actually really liked it! And I laughed loads.

It’s a shame there wasn’t more of Anne though. And disappointing not to see Sam Shepherd.

Fenty1 · 23/12/2022 22:28

I sense this is gonna be a 50 50 split. Those who loved it and those who didn't!

I loved it. I think it’s hard do funny and sad at the same time. And Motherland has always done that well. Can understand why it was too much for some. But I loved it all the same. Especially Lucy Punch - the writers have gone from making us hate her to feel desperately sorry for her.

I love the friendship the main 3 characters have.

Not the laugh a minute we were all expecting but I thought it was brilliant all the same.

Delatron · 23/12/2022 22:29

My only complaint is that I wanted more. 30 minutes not enough when we’ve had nothing for a year.

Blendandmix · 23/12/2022 22:30

I kept waiting for Marion to wake. Didn't get the Lee/Liz story. Where's Sam!? Was all just abit sad.

This with (christmas) bells on.

It was very very sad but still laugh out loud in parts. Not many comedies can do this well.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/12/2022 22:34

I thought it was good. I certainly wasn't expecting that.

Mammajay · 23/12/2022 22:35

I was really disappointed. The only thing that made me laugh was the joke about zorbing and Marion being an old lady not a hamster in a ball. Three sad strands.. Amanda Liz and Julia. Too much misery.

BIWI · 23/12/2022 22:35

I thought it was brilliant. Didn't submit to the usual Christmas saccharine stuff but reflected what life can really be about. Full of love and poignancy as well as sharp humour. AMM was amazing. I hate it when actors cry but still look beautiful. She looked genuinely like she was sobbing.
