I'm the biggest fan of Motherland normally but I feel so let down by the Xmas special! Have been looking forward to it all day but didn't laugh once. Yes it was very sad etc but not what I wanted from a Xmas special at all.

I rewatched it today and loved it, the friendships are what make the series. It was sad obviously in places in the plot but ultimately they all looked after each other and I thought it was really great. Comparing it to the previous Xmas special I feel like some of the characters are more fully realised now, especially Amanda with her ex and mum and Julia after the the builder, and Anne now she is standing up for herself more and with her happy family life. I feel more invested in them all now as characters. I want to know more about Meg and Liz’s lives if they make more series.

I was really looking forward to it, but finished in tears, sadly my mum died on Xmas day so it was not an ideal watch for me and still feel quite teary this morning! But some bits were very funny, and Kevin is always wonderful

I really loved it kind of completely for the same reason - my brother and then my dad died just before Christmas and frankly it was quite similar. Shock, sadness but ultimately friends came together, with very black humour in the unlikeliest places.

Xxx

Without the friends needing to say anything - protect the children's innocence at Christmas was the top priority.

I've only just started watching motherland a week ago and binged it all.

I love lovsome episodes and was a bit,meH about others.

Did anyone notice how much Julia's face looks fresher now compares to the first season?
I want to know what she did, I could do with a freshen up

louise5754 · 11/01/2023 14:28

I can't understand why it was only 30 min long.

UncleQuentinsWife · 11/01/2023 14:46

I haven't heard 'pea for a brain' for years. I'm definitely going to start using it.

Winterpetal · 11/01/2023 14:48

I’d been looking forward to this Christmas special for ages ..
I spent most of it waiting for Julia’s mum to wake up ,and a …”she’s behind you” moment .
when it finally dawned on me ,she had actually died …I think she was on the stretcher …I was in disbelief…then it ended ..
bizarre indeed ..maybe different writers ,I don’t know

Winterpetal · 11/01/2023 14:50

Can anyone recommend anything similar, you know ..if you like motherland you will like …..
kind of thing ..
nothing to watch at moment

Working Moms is great!

Seconding Working Moms!

duc748 · 11/01/2023 15:22

Or, indeed, Mum (Lesley Manville)

Winterpetal · 11/01/2023 15:27

Thanks guys ,will have a look

Iliveditwizbit · 11/01/2023 16:50

Couldn’t work out at first if ‘mum’ was utter drivel or genius, or somewhere in the middle . Interesting reading the past threads about it, seems very marmite. I loved it but lots of posters felt Lesley Manville’s character was unbearably passive and out of date?

I didn't like Mum. She was just so wet.

SpangoDweller · 12/01/2023 14:01

Coming back to this thread after rewatching the whole series and then the Christmas special again: I thought it was great. Not every line of a comedy is meant to be laugh-out-loud funny, and this episode had even more darker comic moments than usual.

TotallyAverage · 12/01/2023 14:57

Mum is one of my favourite shows ever. Absolutely loved it. I agree the previous threads on it have been very marmite but a few posters absolutely nailed why I loved it and thought it was so cleverly done.

Here We Go on iplayer is a good, gentle take on modern family life. Each episode is done as a series of sort of time shifts, so is interesting to watch.

Mandy is also quite silly and funny.

the80sweregreat · 12/01/2023 15:11

Mum and him and her ( same writer ) are just wonderful
Mum had a very good ending , one that I was rooting for along !

NashvilleQueen ???

There are a number of comments on this thread about Tamara's line that her pregnancy might not stick and whether it was crass/unrealistic for a woman to say. It's not an expression I have heard before and so it was interesting to see this morning that there were at least three comments using those words directed to a MNer announcing a pregnancy at an older age. Apparently it is something women say in real life.

@NashvilleQueen

It might not stick is something that ivf people say

So assumed was ivf not natural preg

But only as I've had ivf 5 times

Watched all of motherland in the last couple of weeks. Absolutely loved it. Sobbed at the Christmas special very sad. Preferred the other Christmas episode.

Is there anything similar to fill the Motherland shaped hole? I’ve seen outnumbered and working moms, mum, him and her and two doors down.

Try The Let Down on Netflix. It’s an Australian one about a woman who’s just had a baby and didn’t expect it to be so life-changing.

Thank you!

Julia's father-in-law getting out the ambulance shouting that they'd told him the ambulance was for him cracked me up 😂
