So excited for this!! They need to make another series!

I thought it was clever and well observed. My own mum died recently and I found the Marion situation poignant rather than insensitive.

desperatehousewife21 · 28/12/2022 10:38

I liked it. Was Liz meant to be spending the day with Lee or just dropping the kids to him?

I laughed so much at Kevin asking for all the random kitchen items and Julia saying ‘this isn’t the 1840s Kevin!’

Theres got to be more to Megs relationship, there’s definitely cracks there that need explaining. Is it a relationship built on sex and nothing much else? The shit hat present and him admitting he doesn’t like the jacket kind of says they don’t really know each other on a deep level.

Liz is my favourite character.

VillageFete · 28/12/2022 10:49

I’m the biggest fan of this show. I think it’s genius.

This special, however, was nothing like I imagined it would be. I hated it and i’m gutted. The previous Christmas special was far superior.

I don’t want or expect all that depth and character exploration when watching Motherland. I don’t expect gut wrenching sadness. I wanted laugh out loud, feel good fun and i’m left very disappointed.

I do hope for another Christmas special next year, one that makes me laugh!

lollipoprainbow · 28/12/2022 11:17

@VillageFete same ! Me and my dd are obsessed and watch it all the time. We'd looked forward to this all week and even ordered takeaway pizza to watch it with. It stayed off great and we were giggling away then it took a different turn and left a rather nasty taste in the mouth.

countdowntonap · 28/12/2022 11:24

And why did Amanda’s ex and new wife have Xmas dinner with her and her Mother? Just too contrived …
Things like this do happen. Except I know it happening with a current husband and ex-husband this year. Wasn’t as awkward as it sounds Confused

ageingdisgracefully · 28/12/2022 12:58

I liked it. Well-observed and poignant.

I love the programme generally but, for me, Meg and Tony Head add nothing. Is it just me? No chemistry between them and I find Meg's pissed-ness completely unfunny.

VillageFete · 28/12/2022 14:23

I agree re Meg. She’s the weak link for me. I don’t find her funny or particularly likeable.

She seems a bit pointless as a character.

SirChenjins · 28/12/2022 14:33

No, not just you! Meg’s a very one-dimensional character and there’s zero chemistry between her and Anthony Head.

I also find her a bit try hard. I liked her initially because she was hilarious and a great contrast to both Amanda and Julia, but I like her less now. She’s hard to warm to.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 28/12/2022 14:49

Meg had an excellent introduction episode but her story should have ended there - a massive PITA pisshead who pops up now and again like Lee does. I’d much, much rather have more Anne than Meg

SirChenjins · 28/12/2022 15:03

Definitely - there’s so much more they could do with Anne

A ‘blended family Christmas’ is exactly the kind of thing Amanda would suggest or agree to to show everyone that she is TOTALLY FIIIIINE with Johnny remarrying. I found that very believable.

VillageFete · 28/12/2022 15:11

Yes, would far rather see more of Ann than Meg. Ann is bloody brilliant, and we saw nowhere near enough of her in this special.

walkinthewoodstoday · 28/12/2022 15:36

I watched it again and I liked it on the whole, I just still am finding the death too hard. I think others who have lost parents will also find it just too sad.

LlynTegid · 28/12/2022 17:56

Liked it, probably the best programme I have seen over Christmas.

DillDanding · 28/12/2022 18:20

I agree, it was the best thing I’ve watched over Christmas so far. I’ve lost both my parents recently and thought it struck the right note.

MrsKeats · 28/12/2022 19:34

Best thing I've seen for ages.
Touching, funny and sad.

Chillyweather · 31/12/2022 23:49

Major parallels between the motherland and Mallory towers characters

stickybear · 01/01/2023 23:50

I've just rewatched and made it to the end this time without bursting into tears Smile I did enjoy it second time around, there were some good lines and lovely character moments, just wish there hadn't been the shock of the death first time around. And I do think some of the aftermath (other characters screaming in fright etc) was a bit distasteful. I also feel like the Joanna Lumley character is a bit overplayed - surely nobody is that horrendous in real life?! It just felt a bit too much. Lucy Punch is brilliant though.

stickybear · 01/01/2023 23:54

Oh and re Liz and Lee, I think there have been hints throughout that she still has feelings for him despite everything. I read the Cardiff scenario as showing that she would still drop everything for him if he asked, and I loved Kevin's reminder at the end that he's not her family, her friends are. I love Kevin and Liz's friendship.
