So excited for this!! They need to make another series!

I also loved it - quite a brave decision for a Christmas Special.

Suedomin · 23/12/2022 22:26

I thought it was very good and in a strange way uplifting. Julia's mum went very happily while she was enjoying herself, Julia had the right idea for a gift for her and Amanda stood up to her very terrible mother.
And the friendships became even stronger

TheHauntedPencilCase · 23/12/2022 22:27

Well that made me cry. I never cry and hate things that make me cry, but I strangely loved that

Reindear · 23/12/2022 22:29

Julia’s husband really is a dick. As if he asked her if he could eat the food in the fridge while she was crying over her mum

thefiddlerselbow · 23/12/2022 22:29

As someone who lost a parent this year it was pretty upsetting. I absolutely love Motherland and had set a reminder to watch as I love it so much.

There were some really tender moments but not as many hilarious bits. Generally disappointed but for me I had to go and have a cry because I was sad about the storyline as it was too close to home.

Maybe they'll do some more funny episodes. I hope so.

If I hadn't lost someone recently then it might have been more enjoyable for me. I wish I'd known before.

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 22:31

Come on, guys, it was hilarious. Totally punctured the usual saccharine crap we get fed at Xmas, & lots of laugh out loud moments. Completely reflected the fact that Xmas is pretty sh*t for most people, & top level sarcasm. Oliver Chris and Lucy Punch were the stars of the show. Just needed to be longer!

thefiddlerselbow · 23/12/2022 22:31

Also not enough Anne!

jinglebells22 · 23/12/2022 22:31

Yeah I hate Julia's husband even more now. Imagine asking about cheese when she's sat there mourning her mum. I know he's meant to be a useless, insensitive, selfish dick but that felt a bit too far. It would have been a good opportunity to give him some redeeming features.

lollipoprainbow · 23/12/2022 22:33

Oh dear wasn't expecting that at all!!

Me and my dd were so looking forward to watching it after a tough day and it wasn't exactly uplifting, having lost my mum two months ago it felt a little bit too close to home.

Amanda's mum was a lot nastier this time too.

All in all not the same vibe at all.

DoubleGauze · 23/12/2022 22:33

It seemed disjointed to me. No mention of the shepherd. Liz was planning to spend the day with Lee. Nowhere near enough of Anne. Some weird scripting decisions I felt.

I agree and I found the asking about cheese but totally relatable as someone who was bereaved at Christmas, spot on in fact.

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 22:38

How can people not like Paul? He is a brilliant character, & so well played by Oliver Chris - I loved his line about the "wheel of Stilton".
But I do agree, not enough Anne!

yaflouloci · 23/12/2022 22:39

30 bloody minutes. So disappointed!

TotallyScouting · 23/12/2022 22:40

The previous Motherland Xmas special is possibly the most enjoyed and rewatched Xmas special of any sitcom ever in our household, so we all gathered round excitedly to watch this. Really disappointed. Too much sadness and awkwardness to give us the ‘feels’…

SpongepantsSquareBob · 23/12/2022 22:41

I do love Oliver Chris! He was great in Green Wing. He's great as the useless Paul!
Fingers crossed another season is on its way.
Definitely more Anne and her mum!

I thought it was dreadful. Three sad themes..too much misery. I just rewatched series one and two and loved them.

thesnow · 23/12/2022 22:42

There were some cracker lines early on- all the Pats in Anne's list, "there's a queue Philip Schofield", the Abyss/Ibis...

I loved Amanda standing up to her vile mother. I liked that Tamara comes across nicely, and the sadness that Amanda would probably be Tamara if her mum wasn't so horrible.

ConfusedmumUC · 23/12/2022 22:42

Way way way too serious and miserable, especially after the year we have all had I was so hoping for hilarity and the show we love to come and lift us out of it for half an hour. But no. Disappointing doesn’t even cover it for me.

CaveMum · 23/12/2022 22:43

I liked it, I thought there was a lot of realism in it - the hating each other’s Christmas presents, Amanda’s reaction to her ex’s partner being pregnant, Amanda finally telling her mother to fuck the fuck off!

Marion’s death was sad, and I also expected the paramedics to say she was still alive.

SirChenjins · 23/12/2022 22:45

Was quite disappointed - a Christmas special is supposed to be funny and warm, but given the shit year many of us had this was a mistake imo. Julia’s death would have been better done at another time - Amanda’s storyline was brilliant though.

Same for us! It was so uplifting and moving but this one was just bloody sad and depressing.

Will download tomorrow.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 23/12/2022 22:47

Depressing 😣

thesnow · 23/12/2022 22:47

I also loved that Meg was drinking Lidl own brand Bailey's. Despite all their money.
