Yah no 5 of the strike series starts on Sunday

BBC
Based on the 2020 novel, the second most recent in the Strike series, Troubled Blood sees Strike tackling his first ever cold case.

The official synopsis the season says: "Private detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he’s approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough, who went missing under mysterious circumstances in 1974.

"Strike’s never tackled a cold case before let alone one 40 years old, but despite the slim chance of success, he’s intrigued and takes it on, adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency Robin Ellacott are currently working on. Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention as well as battling her own feelings about Strike.

"As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. They learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly

The first book of this series is the best one!
They are long and complex , but once you get into them , they are enjoyable

No, THIS one is the best one!

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2022 14:56

In my head, I had Margot down as a bit ' posher' then they are portraying her here.
I can't explain it, although I know she was from the wrong side of the tracks to be a doctor etc

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2022 14:57

I do love Cuckoo.
I did enjoy TB, but the first book I tend to reread !

MakingNBaking · 12/12/2022 15:16

I noticed on the credits on this one Robert Galbraith has been dropped and it is 'written by J K Rowling'.
And DH and I both cheered when we saw 'directed by Sue Tully'.

I really do think that the company ought to lease Robin a little Nissan Note or Honda Jazz for her surveillance exercises - if I saw that Defender parked on my street I'd be walking round it before reporting it as unroadworthy.

Karatema · 12/12/2022 15:32

At the beginning it credits Robert Galbraith as the author.

LadyEloise1 · 12/12/2022 15:33

@MakingNBaking
I agree re the Landy. 😂

the80sweregreat · 12/12/2022 15:35

The ' landy' has had its day

Bogglebrain · 12/12/2022 15:58

I watched it and thought it was ok. I loved the book, I think it’s my favourite. It’s very weighty so interesting to see what they’ve included/missed.

I like Pat. Good casting there.

Izzy24 · 12/12/2022 16:02

Off work poorly sick and binge watching this - HOW have I never seen this before?

IwantToRetire · 12/12/2022 16:09

Is it worth having a thread for those of us who haven't read the book ie to just be able to discuss it as a tv programme and does it work, is the plot plausible.

Anyone else interested?

Or I might just give in and binge watch and start of binge watch thread.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/12/2022 16:18

This is meant to a a non spoiler and tv paced thread

The other dramas are on I player think?
The books are very good : I can recommend but they are long

daffodilandtulip · 12/12/2022 16:34

Went to catch up on this from last night, thinking it was a new thing, to find it's series 5. Even more confused by the fact that iplayer tells me I've watched 1 and half of 2. Rewatched and finished 2 today so it'll be a while before I comment on 5 🤣

upinaballoon · 12/12/2022 18:03

I've just rewatched Ep. 1 and got my head straight about the first 'one' person she was talking to. I had thought she was at work but she was at home, where she lodges, talking to her landlord, who's an actor.

There’s also this for people who are watching and have read the book, if that helps.

Why is Robin's hair dark, not ginger, when interviewing Irene?

She's supposed to be a redhead. 😡

upinaballoon · 12/12/2022 22:09

Anna Calder-Marshall is Tom Burke's mother. She is playing Janice. I enjoyed seeing them sitting opposite one another during the interview.
I really enjoyed tonight's episode.

Clawdy · 12/12/2022 22:40

Enjoying it but so many characters! I'm needing subtitles too.

heartbroken22 · 12/12/2022 22:43

I've binge watched it and omg it was worth watching! Love seeing Tom and his mum together. They had a great cast.

AutisticLegoLover · 12/12/2022 23:00

The speed of things is throwing me but we are now halfway through.

EspeciallyD · 12/12/2022 23:07

It is moving fast and there are a lot of characters but I am really enjoying it. Think I might be struggling to keep up if I hadn't read the book though.

Hollyhead · 13/12/2022 06:32

I’ve watched the whole thing (how on earth are some of you resisting the lure of iPlayer?!) and read the book twice before.

However in the sprit of no spoilers my comments are based on up to end of episode 2.
I think so far it’s a good adaption considering how much there is to fit in. I’m not happy with the change to Robin’s hair colour though, she looks overall quite different but I wonder if it’s symbolic of her divorce.
The casting of Pat is perfect! And I think they’ve done a really good job of weaving the Cornwall storyline in.

Also, and hope this doesn’t count as a spoiler (it’s certainly not for the storyline of series 5) but apologies if it does: compared to the books Strike is too thin. I wonder if they adapt book 6 whether they’ll force Tom B to gain weight as being a few stone overweight quite key to his storyline in that one.

Willmafrockfit · 13/12/2022 06:56

why didnt they ask the receptionist about why the patient was at the party? steve douthwaite, or even gloria?

upinaballoon · 13/12/2022 07:44

@Hollyhead , I will definitely re-watch Ep. 2 on I Player. Maybe I'll give in to the lure of the other episodes! Thank goodness for dark nights and short days.

I know they must press on with the Margot story but I am pleased they have time every now and again just to pan on to Strike's face when he is thinking, I think!, about his personal life.

thesnow · 13/12/2022 08:23

I agree Strike is far too thin. And the redhead thing is important- I thought JK "got it" with the sexualisation of red hair in Career of Evil. It's always been obvious Holliday's hair is dyed not natural, but to just give up with her being a redhead full stop misses that aspect of Robin. Unless you live with natural red/strawberry blonde hair, and the pervy comments about it, I expect this sounds daft, but men are weird around blonde/red hair.
