From the same people who made Dark.

The dialogue includes several languages but you can select audio / subtitle preference; I've gone for the actors' original voices with English subtitles.

Just starting it now. It reminds me of The Terror, which I loved.

Oblomov22 · 19/11/2022 21:31

Seen 2 episodes. Then just read a review that said it was incredibly poor. And slow. Can't decide.

stilldumdedumming · 19/11/2022 21:32

Oh I fancied this but dp can't read. Will it be impossible for him?

NadjaCravensworth · 20/11/2022 00:02

Watching it now, not sure what's happening

On ep 2

You can put the settings to 'dubbed in English' then no reading needed.

I watched it all this weekend. In the English dubbed version and it was fine. I love anything set in the past. It reminded me of the terror at first too but then it starts getting more like Westworld - I did say I have no idea what's going on quite a few times! The storyline was a really good idea and kept me guessing (I guessed mostly correct eventually) however I don't think the finale really explained it fully so was a bit disappointed at the ending. It was something to different to watch but it's not the type of show I'd go back and watch again.

Cheesecake53 · 20/11/2022 11:24

I binged it and watched it in the original languages. It started slow, but after the fourth episode, I was properly hooked. After Dark, I trust the creators that they don't make things up as they go along, but that all will be explained in the end. I hope they can do all series they have planned to tell the whole story. There are great theories on Reddit.

burnoutbabe · 20/11/2022 20:41

I binged it all,

I only realised they weren't all speaking English on episode 3! My Netflix defaulted to dubbing. I did wonder why the Spanish gay man sounded so American!

Overall it passed a weekend. And had an end. Happy if there is a season 2, don't mind if not.

Seaoftroubles · 21/11/2022 18:16

I started this as thought it looked good but have but found it incredibly slow. The pauses in their conversations seemed endless! Does it stay in that vein or does it liven up a bit?

AnyFucker · 21/11/2022 19:56

Started quite well, then turned just silly

vitahelp · 22/11/2022 10:38

Enjoying so far but only just started Episode 2. Sad to hear it might go a bit daft but will stick with it.

I went for original voices with English subtitles, I can't stand any kind of dubbing.

cushioncovers · 23/11/2022 13:15

I tried as I was really looking forward to this but gave up after 3 episodes.

That’s what I thought of Dark. It started quite well, but turned into utter drivel..
Nit sure I’ll bother with this one.

queenofarles · 23/11/2022 17:37

so glad it isn’t just me , it started really good ,
the idea all these passengers with different backstories going to America sounded very promising , I really wanted to know more ,
but there were so many gaps and things that just didn’t add up,

they really ruined it with all the crawling down shafts And pyramids .

machanicalmovement · 23/11/2022 17:47

I also made it to episode 3 and gave up, I jut couldn't get into it.

KimberleyClark · 23/11/2022 18:11

I’ve got a bit of a crush on Andreas Piestchmann!

RampantIvy · 23/11/2022 21:12

I thought the start was promising, then it just got sillier and sillier. I really wanted to know why all the passengers with dodgy backgrounds wanted to go to New York.

I didn't like that it was nearly all shot in the dark. I had to watch it with the lights off to see what was happening on screen. And why did Maura whisper all the time?

I didn't realise it was in different languages either as my Netflix defaulted to dubbing in English as well. As the sound quality was so poor I had to have the subtitles on.

Is your DP dyslexic @stilldumdedumming? That must be difficult for him.

stilldumdedumming · 23/11/2022 21:34

@RampantIvy he has brain damage sadly. Which makes it really hard because it seems to be very hard to learn again (we are nearly 3 years into rehab now) and you suddenly realise how much reading there is in every day life.

It sounds like the plot would beyond him (and also not worth it!)

RampantIvy · 23/11/2022 21:36

I'm so sorry @stilldumdedumming. That must be difficult for both of you. Yes, the plot gets very complicated, especailly towards the end.

TBH I started to get a little bored with it by then as it was verging into Doctor Who territory.

Faircastle · 23/11/2022 21:52

I'm glad I stuck with it, in my opinion it started to get more interesting in episodes 7-8.

OP posts:
Faircastle · 23/11/2022 21:54

@stilldumdedumming to be honest it's confusing even if you don't have a brain injury, and due to the content (memory loss etc) it might not be the ideal show for him.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 23/11/2022 22:06

Interestingly, I found 7 and 8 less compelling @Faircastle. By then the plot was just getting so ridiculous.

Katapolts · 23/11/2022 22:06

I absolutely loved it, but I loved Dark too.

LikeTearsInRain · 24/11/2022 00:24

I started Dark as soon as it was released and was hooked straight away. It wrapped up so well too. An actual logically perfect story with no real unanswered threads.

How does this compare?

It’s not wrapped up in 1 season right? So potentially a few more to go?

RampantIvy · 24/11/2022 22:42

On the back of this thread, I have just started watching Dark. I hope it has a more satisfying ending than 1899.
