From the same people who made Dark.

The dialogue includes several languages but you can select audio / subtitle preference; I've gone for the actors' original voices with English subtitles.

I had absolutely no idea what was going on but I watched it all anyway. Subtitles seemed to work best for my brain.

I liked it. I just let it wash over me and it all sort of made sense in the end. Kind of.

On the back of this thread, I have just started watching Dark. I hope it has a more satisfying ending than 1899.

The creators have planned 1899 as a three-season story; that wasn't the end.

We watched dark actually but that was pre brain damage. Thank you @Faircastle and @RampantIvy

Oddly he chose to watch Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars when he came out of hospital. Not only could he not understand that for certain but also he had a horrible time in a coma - like a nightmare you can't wake up from and scary. Presumably he either didn't understand that those shows involve a coma or he was looking for something recognisable. There are parts in those shows where the character comes round to a doctor saying something that has been part of his coma dream. Dp said yes over and over to that (he can talk a lot better now - we are very lucky his personality is in tact mainly).

Thanks for the info I may just wait a couple years until final season is about a week away from release and binge it.

Enjoy! Subs > dub for all foreign shows for me. Hope you’ve made the right choice 😉

dearohdeary · 27/11/2022 22:07

Very confusing. Was it modern day or 1899? Is she caught in the cycle for years and years ?

queenofarles · 28/11/2022 10:56

That’s what I thought too dearohdeary then I thought maybe it’s a prequel to dark ? But I read it’s not , it felt like it came out of nowhere ,

TreacsPotNoodle · 28/11/2022 11:25

Started this the other night after being recommended by SIL.

My god it is SO boring!!!

Nothing interesting happens in the first episode. I felt like I'd wasted an hour of my life.

Gave up half way through episode 3.

Katapolts · 28/11/2022 13:22

@dearohdeary @queenofarles did you watch the final episode? It wasn't modern day or 1899...

dearohdeary · 28/11/2022 13:38

I did watch the final episode. Why were they all in old fashioned clothes ? Were the stuck in the simulation for 100s of years?!?

queenofarles · 28/11/2022 14:08

I did kata , it felt like anything from late 60s to early 80s, the inbuilt screens gave me flashbacks of my parents old house! , kudos for the set designers on recreating that particular aesthetic,

They were in a simulation of 1899 - like playing a computer game.

This
I really enjoyed it but then I also enjoyed Dark

Faircastle · 28/11/2022 16:41

@stilldumdedumming I can understand that. Sometimes people find fiction helpful in processing trauma and expressing the things they can't easily express themselves.

It's 3 Seasons long and all on Netflix

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/12/2022 23:03

I adored Dark, as you can probably tell by the username, I watched and enjoyed all of this, but I was very ummmmm..... about the final reveal. The second series will really have to impress to keep me, though I will give it a chance. I'm wondering if every series will be a different year and scenario.

GardenNice · 02/12/2022 21:47

The first few episodes were ok, then it went completely weird. I stuck with it until the 6th episode but gave up at that point.

Yamaya · 02/12/2022 22:01

I absolutely loved it and now have a huge crush on Aneurin Barnard. Didn't realise there was going to be another two seasons so that's exciting.

changeling2022 · 03/12/2022 18:14

Didn't like it until the end. It all made sense then

Bathbomb99 · 07/12/2022 22:47

I’ve just finished it and do come in to find a thread about it. I absolutely loved it! So different. I’ve not seen Dark… need to look in to that.

fantasmasgoria1 · 07/12/2022 22:50

1899 was absolutely awesome! Hope there will be a second series!

TheGoddessFrigg · 20/12/2022 13:13

I absolutely loved this and felt the reveal was absolutely fascinating. and yes it did start slow but they needed us to get invested in the characters. And sometimes it's nice to have a good meaty programme to ruminate on.

And the captain is so handsome!

TheGoddessFrigg · 20/12/2022 13:20

and Im so happy Anuerin Barnard is 35 as I feel less guilty about finding him so attractive 😋

duc748 · 20/12/2022 15:43

For me, Dark is just about my favourite TV series ever. It's certainly right up there with Sopranos, The Wire, etc etc. So it was a high bar for 1899. Did I like it as much? No, it was very slow, and, er, dark! I might watch the last ep back again, but clearly there's more to come.
