Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

Sorry, I was replying to @BedTaker, thought I had quoted her post in mine.

I am 20 minutes in and I don't think I can watch anymore 😕 I love the crown, its my favourite show. The quality of the other seasons just isn't there. The casting is just atrocious. Dominic West is unbearable to watch. Princess Anne, The Queen Mother & Princess Margaret are unrecognisable. It feels more like a channel 5 production. I'm so sad it's gone like this 😪 does it get any better??

Robin233 · 13/11/2022 18:47

Hang in there 3 and 4 are very good as is 6.

MichaelAndEagle · 13/11/2022 18:50

I've watched it all.....I feel like its moved time along to get us to the next series.
Wasn't gripped but did like one or two episodes.
Agree about some of the actors.
It had a gloomy feel, and I think that was probably deliberate as it was a rough time for the Royal family. Amazing to think how the Queen turned public opinion round by the end of her life.
Looking forward to the next series, feel like they could have done this in 3 or 4 episodes.

Guinefort · 13/11/2022 19:11

I've just finished episode 4. I was about to give up after episode 1 (even though I have loved all the previous series) but I pushed on through and am finding it better as it goes on, so worth persevering if you can.

Casting-wise - Imelda Staunton good, voice and mannerisms are excellent and well studied (although IS styled little too "old" for 1990s Queen imo). Quite like Princess Margaret casting. Initially thought Princess Anne awful but actually much better in later episode, particularly the scene where she puts her foot down with the Queen, I thought very much more authentic. Diana - voice and accent good, although much too tall and thin and too ott on the "Diana-isms".

But I'm so cross about the casting for Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Queen Mother. Absolutely dire!!! Actually, if I cross my eyes I can see a vague physical facial similarity between Jonathon Pryce and (a much older) PP but his posture and voice and intonation are totally wrong and he looks way too old and doddery for 1990s Prince Philip. And who on earth thought the actress for the Queen Mum was acceptable?!!!!! Have they ever even looked at a photo of the QM?!?! Indefensible, diabolical lazy casting.

As for Dominic West, I'm actually raging... he looks NOTHING like Prince Charles and appears to make NO effort to capture his voice or mannerisms. Wrong wrong wrong! I have actually met DW a few times (lives locally) and I'd almost go as far as to say his normal voice is actually more posh than the one he is using for PC 🤣.

Some of the writing is really poor too, using clumpy dialogue to "explain" to us thicko viewers what is going on or things we might have missed during the time jump. Cringey, cringey, out of character unrealistic scenes too (see Prince Philip consoling Penny Knatchbull and late night telephone call between Queen and Princess Margaret to name just two).

Anyway enough ranting. I'm enjoying it well enough, although not a patch on the earlier series (Claire Foy/Matt Smith were just incredible).

Guinefort · 13/11/2022 19:14

What on earth is going on Mumsnet HQ??!??? I just wrote a really long and very benign opinion piece about the new series and my view on some of the casting and as soon as I pressed post it was instantly hidden until Mumsnet could take a look 😭

Guinefort · 13/11/2022 19:15

I've never written anything offensive in my life and certainly not on a chat thread about one of my favourite TV series! How very, very odd

Supersimkin2 · 13/11/2022 19:19

Ooh! Whose lawyer is pulling MNHQ strings, that’s really all we need to know.

Guinefort · 13/11/2022 19:31

All my comments were about the casting choices not about the real life royals.

I also commented that I found some of the dialogue really cringey and clunky. As example of that I mentioned an early scene between the actors playing PP and PK.

I wonder if it was that that sounded the claxons at HQ and yet earlier on this thread there has been actual speculation about real life royal relationships that has been allowed to stand!

ImAvingOops · 13/11/2022 19:47

If Netflix can make this programme, people should be able to discuss it without getting deleted

This reply has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

PrincessJanet · 13/11/2022 20:03

Yeah, you’re right. PP and PK seem to trigger it.

MarshaBradyo · 13/11/2022 20:03

I’m intrigued - what the subject of the posts are that are being deleted

PrincessJanet · 13/11/2022 20:04

On that subject I thought it was something The Crown handled ambiguously well.

ShamedBySiri · 13/11/2022 20:13

And yet MN allowed a disgraceful thread of pure spiteful unfounded gossip about real life relationship to stand despite many complaints and reports.

sashagabadon · 13/11/2022 20:21

I’ve watched half of episode 1 and then just stopped. I will go back and finish it. I am watching Dominic West as Prince Charles and on bbc1 rogue heroes as the SAS leader and I am alsorewatching him as mcnulty in the wire 😁
prince Charles is his least convincing performance!

sashagabadon · 13/11/2022 20:21

Who is pk?

mileaminute · 13/11/2022 20:25

@sashagabadon
P€nny Kn&tchbull

(Written to try to avoid the auto-delete) Grin

sashagabadon · 13/11/2022 20:35

Thanks mile

Suboptimalsitch · 13/11/2022 21:33

Dominic West looked like he’d put so little effort into his role. Apart from the lip gurning thing (which he didn’t get right), I’d have had no idea it was Charles he was playing. I’m not expecting body doubles but nothing was right - accent, mannerisms, they way he stands/walks etc - all totally unconvincing. Same with Jonathan Pryce. He caught nothing of Phillip at all.

DeeofDenmark · 13/11/2022 21:39

Is it just me who watched and thought they must’ve had an innocent friendship but now thinks there was more to it? Why else would any mention be auto deleted.

longwayoff · 13/11/2022 21:43

Yes, its like a channel 5 afternoon film. Terrible script, just awful. Bah.

cathyandclare · 13/11/2022 21:49

Just watched the tampongate phone call. I remember it as being one of the cringiest things ever. I give Dominic West and Olivia Williams for bringing out the humour and relationship out, my toes barely curled!

cathyandclare · 13/11/2022 21:53

I give Dominic West and Olivia Williams credit

Cocolapew · 13/11/2022 22:22

Just watched the Al Fayed episode, they've been v generous with the size of the villa and grounds.
