Anyone seen this yet? I'm not quite as convinced by the casting for this season as I was for previous ones but will withhold judgement until I've watched the whole series.

Elizabeth Debicki looks the part as Diana, although I thought Emma Corrin captured her voice better. Dominic West is very flattering casting for Charles but Olivia Williams as Camilla is uncanny. I never thought she looked anything like her but they've made her a dead ringer! Same goes for Jonny Lee Miller as John Major.

It looks like this season will cover events up to and including Diana's Panorama interview.

I think the casting is way off on just about everyone, although I think that the Queen's portrayal is sometimes a bit livelier than in previous iterations. Elizabeth Debicki is okay, but not all that convincing, especially because she is taller than almost everyone in the cast. It's a bit distracting when she is looking down at everyone, including her brother Charles, who is quite tall in real life, I think. I love her clothes, though, especially that Lady Dior handbag that keeps popping up.

It is entertaining; I give it that. Three more episodes to go.

The poster who said none of them are posh enough was absolutely right.
And at one point I briefly saw Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip holding his knife like a pen during a meal.

Didn't Hugh already play him in Love, Actually?? Wink

Martine McCutchen as Camilla?

Jacopo · 11/11/2022 15:31

Looking at photos of the Queen Mother in 1995 it would have been better to cast Imelda Staunton as the QM and find someone younger to play the Queen. Although I didn't much like Olivia Coleman in the role I think she could easily have played the Queen in this series. She looked too old in the last series so would have been better in this one.

ImAvingOops · 11/11/2022 15:33

John Major was treated very generously I think - apart from the subtle digs that all was not well at home, they've ignored Maastricht and the ERM debacle. I know they aren't strictly to do with the Queen but I'm a bit surprised there was no conversation about Major's political difficulties at all.

Just got to Blair's arrival - they've emphasised the cheesiness Grin

ImAvingOops · 11/11/2022 15:37

@Jacopo, agree. OC would have been very good for this period and IS looks much more like the Queen mother than the actress cast.
I think they've also portrayed the QM as quite likeable but I've read that she had an edge - only interested in William as he was the heir, never bothered with Harry.

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/11/2022 16:02

The portrayal of the QM was the worst of all.

On Philip, I think besides the physical attributes, they had his personality skewed in an odd way. It is known that he was very intelligent and read widely, but he was not at all into over analyzing himself veering into self-pity (or so it seems from all that has been written about him and things that he said in interviews).

Another thing that irritated me is that when the QM and Margaret were questioning his interest in Russia by making snide references to his German antecedents, the script writers completely overlooked that while his maternal grandmother was a German princess (Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine), his paternal grandmother was a Russian Grand Duchess (Olga Constantinovna) and a Romanov.

Hmm. There's definitely something going on here! I've said NOTHING WRONG @Mnhq!
You have a strange embargo on a particular name. It's like saying Voldemort on this site! There is an auto thread hider if you mention a certain name 😡

Jacopo · 11/11/2022 16:31

Well I got an email to say I’d been quoted in a post only to find the post had been hidden! @Eaumyword please give me a hint of what you said!!

ImAvingOops · 11/11/2022 16:48

What happened here? Anyone fancy sending a PM?

Another thing that irritated me is that when the QM and Margaret were questioning his interest in Russia by making snide references to his German antecedents, the script writers completely overlooked that while his maternal grandmother was a German princess (Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine), his paternal grandmother was a Russian Grand Duchess (Olga Constantinovna) and a Romanov.

No, the Queen mentions her, presumably for the viewers' benefit, whilst they're at the dinner table. When she's talking about DNA sequencing.

DeeofDenmark · 11/11/2022 17:31

Harry?

DeeofDenmark · 11/11/2022 17:34

Or is it Andrew?

In that scene, the Queen mentions Victoria of Hesse, but she does not mention Grand Duchess Olga, Philip's Romanov grandmother. That makes sense of course in that scene because Philip's DNA was being used to identify Victoria's sister Alexandra and her children. But in the scene where QM and Margaret are sort of making fun of Philip's interest in Russia, Margaret invokes his German ancestry and the QM refers to him as a "mongrel." But the Queen just lets these remarks pass, when she had to know that Philip might also have some interest in Russia because his other grandmother was Russian and a Romanov.

I really want to know what you said now 🤣

That's the second time a message has been hidden.

What's going on?

Nimblesandbimbles · 11/11/2022 19:21

The first time a post was hidden it was about the actor playing Prince Phillip saying he seemed a bit old for the part. No idea why it was hidden.

A doctor who she was friends with. The actor is Julia's husband in Motherland and played Prince William in a BBC drama a few years ago. And the guy who was Diana's private secretary last season played Harry in the same drama and in The Windsors!

Thank you! Recognise the actor now from Motherland now

CrabbitBastard · 11/11/2022 19:50

Totally agree with PPs regarding the casting.
Imelda Staunton is really good, much better than Olivia Colman, who, as people have already said, doesn't ever succeed in making you think she's anyone other than Olivia Colman. Elizabeth Depinski (sp?) is also good but too tall and skinny. Lesley Manville, Jonathon Price, Dominic West are all badly cast.
The actors playing John Major and Mohammed al Fayed were brilliant.
I knew the Romanav story but whenever it is acted out its always really hard to watch.

Phillip was grander than the Queen!
