The Harvey story is strange : why isn't he working ? Why is the flat such a mess ? Is he just talking to her all the time ?

I think Janine is calling time on the relationship for her own gain, not because she is being mature. Someone who has made a huge point of flaunting her relationship to be nasty to Linda isn't going to have had a complete character transplant.
