C4 / UK pace: No Spoilers Please - Handmaids Tale returns anyone else excited?

YEY. just seen the new season is starting 23 October. I binge watched the others earlier in the month so can’t wait for it to start again. The ending was a shocker that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see where they’re taking it. Will serena joy get let go because she was under his orders AND she’s having a baby. Or will she get put into jail and baby taken away when he’s born.

Is there another thread going at uk pace?

I am soooo over the twitchy June faces. We get it, Elizabeth Moss, you're a great actress and your facial expressions were once well loved. But they've been done to death now. Please stop, enough!

FrankTheThunderbird · 24/10/2022 10:45

I think this is the uK pace thread, isn't it?

esgee · 24/10/2022 16:40

Sorry for being dim, but can someone please explain why the supporters of Serena, coming out of the building with the candle lights, saying they were with her. Why don't they go to Gilead if its so great?

They have had had shots of supporters with placards etc in previous episodes
I can understand the men supporting the cause, but not the women in Canada.

Can someone educate me on this please?

XanaduKira · 24/10/2022 17:24

I agree with you @esgee and actually said to my DH last night that they need to fuck off back to Gilead if they support it.

My assumption is that they're Canadian fundamental Christians so can't automatically go to Gilead (does it let migrants enter?) but have been supporters of Serena and Fred from before Gilead was formed. No idea though!

Tulipomania · 24/10/2022 18:25

Even the nuttiest of cults will have their supporters.

Tulipomania · 24/10/2022 18:26

I man, look at Trump. Q Anon, etc.

mycatisannoying · 24/10/2022 02:50

I found it a bit boring and June gets on my nerves now, with her face twitching and pearl clutching.
I was also thinking 'oh just take a damn shower'. It all seemed rather self-indulgent.

Yeah, I'm all heart Grin

I'm the same. I gave up after half an hour. I think it's completely lost it's way now and is getting ridiculous in terms of plot.

eleanorwish · 24/10/2022 20:05

I think Serena playing the part of the grieving widow of a martyred Fred, would be a great propaganda tool for the Gilead regime

mycatisannoying · 24/10/2022 20:58

I must admit, I didn't think Serena would be as bothered over Fred's death.
Clearly I misread the signs!

Notmenottodaynotever · 24/10/2022 22:15

They show her remembering a good time with him. Maybe she will later remember him beating her, or agreeing to her finger being chopped off etc!

WhyDoesItAlways · 24/10/2022 22:46

Can someone remind me about nicks wife? I remember him getting married to someone young (15ish?) but the wife he had in this episode seemed much older and was walking with a stick.

AnyFucker · 24/10/2022 22:51

Have they changed the actress. ?

FrankTheThunderbird · 24/10/2022 22:58

Nick got married to Eden early on. She was very young and then ran away with someone else. They were caught and drowned.

Hes remarried but I'm not sure if we ever saw the wedding or know anything about his wife.

SoggyBananaLoaf · 24/10/2022 22:59

Nick's first wife was executed along with the guard she snogged.

Notmenottodaynotever · 24/10/2022 23:15

I couldn't remember what she looked like - I thought maybe that was her, injured after being dropped in the pool. She must be significant, if she is "in on" his actions

WhyDoesItAlways · 24/10/2022 23:17

Thanks all, I remember Eden being drowned in the swimming pool now. Obviously just missed the bit where he moved onto wife no 2!

dapsnotplimsolls · 24/10/2022 23:17

I don't think we saw his current wife in S4 - we saw him put his wedding ring back on after he met June but we didn't see her.

sagalooshoe · 24/10/2022 23:40

Just catching up on previous episodes and have realised that Handmaid's Tale has the effect of srirring a desire to boil wash and press all my sheets and get everything spic and span and shipshape. I'm pretty sure this wasn't Atwoods desired outcome. My house looks great though

This thought has puzzled me, can anyone enlighten me . Why would Tuello, whose mask I enjoyed watching slipping btw, and presumably the Canadian Justice system agree to allowing Serena return to Gilead to bury Fred , hasn’t she been charged with assault and assisting in Junes rape? Serious charges, she’s hardly going to agree to come back after the funeral, not that Gilead would let her, she has potential hand maid written all over her pregnant belly. Obviously she has to go back to move the story on but it struck me as unlikely.
a) that she would risk going
b) that they would let her

XanaduKira · 25/10/2022 13:04

I thought he did tell her no, so they weren't allowing her to go back? They were just moving her somewhere more secure?!

Me too.

It just seemed so odd that being a grieving widow suddenly meant you would be allowed to dictate leaving the country, despite serious charges against you.

viques · 25/10/2022 13:19

XanaduKira · 25/10/2022 13:04

I thought he did tell her no, so they weren't allowing her to go back? They were just moving her somewhere more secure?!

When they walked to the car passed the people holding candles she said that she expected a civilised country to allow her to go and bury her murdered husband, I assumed she meant she was then going to put emotional pressure on the Canadian Government to allow her to bury Fred inGilead. Tuello didn’t laugh and say “ sorry luv, that’s pregnancy hormones speaking” or words to that effect so I assume it is on the cards.

ProseccoOnIce · 25/10/2022 13:40

Watched it last night on E4.

I spent most of the episode willing June to clean up the blood from her hands.

About Serena going back to Gilead - I thought she had charges against her still?

She'd be bonkers to go back there - but the supporters clearly boosted her ego that she'd be important in Gilead.

And I didn't expect Emily to go back to Gilead - but guess they had to write the character out.

Lastly - Fred's body did not look like it had been "torn to pieces" - it looked rather intact! I thought the handmaids would have castrated him at least!

whatsthestory123 · 25/10/2022 19:21

well ive gone right back to the beginning series 1 episode 1 forgot how good it was and how awful aunt lydia was and as usual for me taking in bits i had missed

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 25/10/2022 20:00

I think June’s going back. But if they are staying consistent with The Testaments, what she can realistically achieve is a bit limited.
