new drama. 8 episodes. Sun to wed x 2w

Somewhere Boy stars Lewis Gribben as Danny, a boy who grows up in isolation and is told the world is full of monsters.

Somewhere Boy is the intriguing story of Danny, who has spent his entire life in isolation at a remote house with his father Steve. At 18 Danny discovers that he’s been living a lie and the outside world is not full of murderous monsters, as he's been led to believe.

It emerges that Steve absconded with Danny when he was a baby after his mum was killed in a car crash in a warped bid to keep his son safe. As sheltered Danny becomes older he begins to question their life, leading to revelations, which may make or break him as he faces the real world.

Lewis Gribben stars as Danny, Rory Keenan plays Danny’s dad Steve, Lisa McGrillis plays Sue (Steve’s sister and Danny’s aunt) and Samuel Bottomley stars as Aaron, Danny’s cousin and Sue’s son.

From C4 press: “Overwhelmed with grief, dad Steve bought a house in the middle of nowhere and locked Danny in, telling him the world outside was full of monsters waiting to take him away. Just like they took his mum.

“Steve thought he’d done the right thing, bringing Danny up safe and warm, away from murderers and wars and drugs and governments and burgers and evil.

“For eighteen years they just stayed in, listening to Benny Goodman records and watching old movies with no sad endings. And that’s how Danny grew up. It was all he knew. And he was happy.

“But when Danny turns eighteen his whole world — everything he’s ever known - explodes in an instant and he has to come to terms with a new world he never knew existed.”

he seems to have coped quite well with the world outside to begin with

I recognise dad. Not sure from where

ans why did his family not wonder where they were the last few years

I’m just watching the second episode, I did wonder why the sister hadn’t been around, or did they not know where he was?

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 14:36

Sad only them at the funeral and Angie

prnwhy they seemed weird about her going out with him years ago

@Timeforachange67 I assume he didn’t tell sister where he lived/moved to after his wife died

I’m just watching the second episode, I did wonder why the sister hadn’t been around, or did they not know where he was?

Yes surely he could've been tracked down if she'd have gone to the police or social services, the poor kid had been severely neglected for his whole life.

We'll maybe find out whose dilapidated house it was, can't have been the Dad's as there seemingly wasn't any money left for the funeral but how did he have electricity and water?

It's so sad and poignant to watch, interesting how his cousin lacks confidence and social skills too I hope he ends up helping him more.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 15:59

Yes they could have tracked him down via his ni number

obv worked and had access to money for food and bills

and assuming house wasn’t that far away either

cousin seems a bit of a perve

'Yes they could have tracked him down via his ni number'

Yes and his sister didn't seem overly surprised by the situation. It's such a safeguarding red flag surely when an adult disappears with a young dc. Everyone seems more interested in his weirdness rather than question why on earth he was let down by his family and every single public organisation involved in child welfare.

Immunisations? did he just go off the radar and no one chased it up. I know it isn't a documentary but he was thoroughly failed by everyone and all the tweeness about black and films and old fashioned music seems to be glossing over that somehow. As if the love of his severely mentally ill father was enough.

I'll watch the rest though, see if it does reveal a bit about the obvious massive failings.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 16:25

Totally failed by everyone

poor boy

and to know you father delib Lied and kept you in the dark about mums death and lying about monsters

his dad had serious issues imo

OP posts:
LookingAtYou · 17/10/2022 16:28

'his dad had serious issues imo'

Yes he was clearly severely mentally ill which just begs the question how the poor kid got to 18 without one person noticing. Then to go to a shared house with strangers just just seems so inappropriate. Anyway maybe more will be revealed!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 16:31

And seems to be coping ok with shared house and seeing people vicars- his dads friend - buying a suit etx

and talking to cousin aunt and her partner

if he has only ever seen his dad

OP posts:
butterpuffed · 17/10/2022 17:44

I can't work out how he reached late teens and people didn't know.

He seemed to get used to the outside world pretty quickly [when he let himself out], didn't act wary of it. I think his cousin is gradually getting used to him after being hostile first of all.

Another thing I can't fathom is why they had two half hour episodes following one another , can't see the point.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 17:46

Maybe was 30m x 8 weeks

it didn’t seem like an hour

but like it on night after night

def coped with life meeting people

Yes, might seem a bit of an odd thing to say but he doesn't seem traumatised enough. I'm wondering if he had something to do with his dad's death. Remember at the beginning of the first episode the dad told him to go to bed as he had a big the next day. But yes I'm sure more will be revealed.

Yes I expect that was the case - he must have spoken to her on the pay phone before I’m assuming? Maybe she didn’t realise the extent of the isolation

purpleme12 · 17/10/2022 20:43

No I don't think he had anything to do with his dad's death

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2022 20:44

No he sent son to bed so he could go into the field and shot self

OP posts:
DenholmElliot1 · 17/10/2022 22:43

He seems to have waited till his son was 18 and then shot himself.

I'm guessing his dad was on benefits and thats where he got his money from. He obviously didn't spend much

Yes just bizarre. Subject his son to years of control, manipulation and emotional abuse with stories of monsters then kill himself. What a horrible man, mh issues or not.
