new drama. 8 episodes. Sun to wed x 2w

Somewhere Boy stars Lewis Gribben as Danny, a boy who grows up in isolation and is told the world is full of monsters.

Somewhere Boy is the intriguing story of Danny, who has spent his entire life in isolation at a remote house with his father Steve. At 18 Danny discovers that he’s been living a lie and the outside world is not full of murderous monsters, as he's been led to believe.

It emerges that Steve absconded with Danny when he was a baby after his mum was killed in a car crash in a warped bid to keep his son safe. As sheltered Danny becomes older he begins to question their life, leading to revelations, which may make or break him as he faces the real world.

Lewis Gribben stars as Danny, Rory Keenan plays Danny’s dad Steve, Lisa McGrillis plays Sue (Steve’s sister and Danny’s aunt) and Samuel Bottomley stars as Aaron, Danny’s cousin and Sue’s son.

From C4 press: “Overwhelmed with grief, dad Steve bought a house in the middle of nowhere and locked Danny in, telling him the world outside was full of monsters waiting to take him away. Just like they took his mum.

“Steve thought he’d done the right thing, bringing Danny up safe and warm, away from murderers and wars and drugs and governments and burgers and evil.

“For eighteen years they just stayed in, listening to Benny Goodman records and watching old movies with no sad endings. And that’s how Danny grew up. It was all he knew. And he was happy.

“But when Danny turns eighteen his whole world — everything he’s ever known - explodes in an instant and he has to come to terms with a new world he never knew existed.”

But why

he was happy to go out

he was happy to date again

why restrict his son

Because he was worried that he might die like his wife.

'Because he was worried that he might die like his wife.'

Because he was a controlling, manipulative, abusive psychopath (or psychotic, whichever) who had long lost a grip on reality. His wife's death may have triggered his disturbing behaviour but to suggest it was 'because he was worried' rather over simplifies things.

Can’t have been that worried or else he wouldn’t have gone out

That was so sad , but very watchable . All the loose ends aren't really tied up though , I want to see how Danny adapts to his new life. Maybe there'll be a second series .

I just couldn't quite get over that the auntie knew where he was all along but didn't intervene. If her brother had been by himself if have left him to it too, but knowing there was a child involved and she didn't even do an anonymous referral to social services or anything was baffling.

Oh I agree completely, he was all those things. Somebody further up the thread wondered if Steve really thought there were monsters. My point was no he didn't think there were monsters. He invented them to keep his son inside.

It was so fucked up. Said to DH I felt depressed at the end of it.
I thought it was interesting at the start DH felt a bit sorry for the dad, I didn’t at all. Horrible, abusive bastard. I couldn’t believe the end episode, he actually went even lower. So emotionally abusive too “don’t I make it nice in here, don’t you like it” - honestly I know it’s not real but it made my blood boil.

@Blondeshavemorefun she saw him at the supermarket and followed him. So she knew from when Danny was a toddler (?). And didn’t do anything, the guilt was eating her up, I think.

@Blondeshavemorefun ".....how could she have not gone knocking to see if he was ok"

She saw the gun and ran.
If she went to the police and said that she'd seen her brother, who lived with his son very rurally, with a gun, would they have done anything ?
They should of course have done a welfare check.
She struck me as well meaning but not very bright. Not realising the impact of imposing a traumatised man child on her unhappy son. She wasn't getting the supports she needed from the social worker who was almost willing the "problem" to go away as she didn't appear to have the time to deal with the case.
