new drama. 8 episodes. Sun to wed x 2w

Somewhere Boy stars Lewis Gribben as Danny, a boy who grows up in isolation and is told the world is full of monsters.

Somewhere Boy is the intriguing story of Danny, who has spent his entire life in isolation at a remote house with his father Steve. At 18 Danny discovers that he’s been living a lie and the outside world is not full of murderous monsters, as he's been led to believe.

It emerges that Steve absconded with Danny when he was a baby after his mum was killed in a car crash in a warped bid to keep his son safe. As sheltered Danny becomes older he begins to question their life, leading to revelations, which may make or break him as he faces the real world.

Lewis Gribben stars as Danny, Rory Keenan plays Danny’s dad Steve, Lisa McGrillis plays Sue (Steve’s sister and Danny’s aunt) and Samuel Bottomley stars as Aaron, Danny’s cousin and Sue’s son.

From C4 press: “Overwhelmed with grief, dad Steve bought a house in the middle of nowhere and locked Danny in, telling him the world outside was full of monsters waiting to take him away. Just like they took his mum.

“Steve thought he’d done the right thing, bringing Danny up safe and warm, away from murderers and wars and drugs and governments and burgers and evil.

“For eighteen years they just stayed in, listening to Benny Goodman records and watching old movies with no sad endings. And that’s how Danny grew up. It was all he knew. And he was happy.

“But when Danny turns eighteen his whole world — everything he’s ever known - explodes in an instant and he has to come to terms with a new world he never knew existed.”

Yes it is watchable they just needed to make some reference to his neglect to make it more believable. Even something like when the police bundled him into the police car if the sister had said 'omg you've been living here all this time?' or once in her home to try and talk to him about his isolated life but nope, she waves him off to the pub as if that isn't going to end in disaster.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2022 09:41

I’m just amazed sister never tried to find them or contact them

dad was her brother. Son her nephew

no sign of them for years

I know she said she was relieved he went away but didn’t she ever think of them

I missed some of the first ep. Is the man at the farm the one who Danny thinks killed his mum in a car crash ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2022 13:34

Yes she stole cousins phone. Looked on Google and found that he only got 12mth

Thanks Blondes , that makes sense .

Timeforachange67 · 18/10/2022 19:52

After watching last nights I wonder why she didn’t report him when she saw what the place looked like that they were living in and that he went in carrying a shotgun?

purpleme12 · 18/10/2022 22:14

That actor playing the teenage Danny was in the last episode of All Creatures Great and Small

It's a bit hard listening to how Aaron speaks

LookingAtYou · 19/10/2022 08:09

I've just read a review where it says 'a boy brought up in the most sheltered of environments has to learn to face the outside world'. Crazy! More like 'a boy who survived an emotionally abusive childhood learns his unsupported, psychotic father lied to him his whole life'.

Anyway I'll watch the last 3 and see if Auntie Sue finally admits he was failed and she was as responsible as the mentally ill df!

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2022 13:07

I felt for him at the end

I have to go away now 😢

Ive not seen any thing so far to think his father was psychotic. I think he was initially depressed and afraid his son would be taken away and then didn't know how to get out of the hole he'd dug. I don't think he believed in the monsters

Faircastle · 19/10/2022 22:25

I've just finished it, and found it incredibly sad. I have very little sympathy for Steve.

DenholmElliot1 · 19/10/2022 23:05

I enjoyed this a lot.

I don't understand why there is always an annoucement at the end saying if you've been affected by the issues raised in this programme contact (whoever).
I mean, how many people have been kept in by their parents for 18 years? Thats a bizzare annoucement to make or am I missing something.

OytheBumbler · 19/10/2022 23:17

I've just finished watching. I thought it was brilliant.

I wish there'd been some explanation though as to how a young baby could disappear so completely.

Eightytwenty · 20/10/2022 00:17

Thought this was so poignant, brilliantly acted. One of the best dramas I’ve seen for years. Might watch it again! Twitter was a bit of a distraction so am sure I missed bits.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/10/2022 10:40

I think the dad was really weird and def had mental issues

if he Truely believed that there were monsters he wouldn’t have gone out shagging

he kept his son hidden fir years. Took away his life

then encouraged his son to kill him

poor Danny

plus the police surely would have reliesed the angle of gun and knew dad didn’t kill his self

I don't think that was just depression or digging oneself into a hole. He may not have have been hearing voices or displayed some of the other well known characteristics of psychosis but it's a term that covers a wide range of behaviours. Keeping a child captive for 18yrs, emotionally abusing him and feeding him stories about monsters, then trying to kill him is psychotic behaviour .

'Symptoms of psychosis include delusions (false beliefs) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that others do not see or hear). Other symptoms include incoherent or nonsense speech and behavior that is inappropriate for the situation'

Whose house was it and why were all his belongings left behind, why wouldn’t they have let him take his records for some comfort?!

It was quite disturbing, particularly the bit where he was on the walkie talkie saying hello and told his Dad he was so lonely.

OytheBumbler · 20/10/2022 13:13

I thought the actor who played Aaron was brilliant as well. I went from not liking him to really rooting for him. What a selfish arse his dad was!

Faircastle · 20/10/2022 14:30

When Steve went out for food / supplies, he must have left Danny alone in the house from the start, even when he was extremely young (toddler / preschool age).

Yep

total neglect

Steve didn't believe in monsters. He fabricated them to make his son too frightened to go out. He definitely had some kind of mental illness but wouldn't say he was psychotic.

purpleme12 · 20/10/2022 22:35

Just watching episode 6

Aaron is just so socially awkward it's unreal.

I did feel sorry for him in the scene with his dad though

But why

he was happy to go out

he was happy to date again

why restrict his son
