Anyone watching this? What do you think?

I know it's got super bad reviews but I love it. In spite of the wooden acting, the cringe worthy dialogues and the dodgy accents. I normally don't like action but I'm loving the fight scenes. And I love Arondir, the elf and the other Southlanders, including the orcs and Adar.

However, I haven't watched any TV (or any movies) since game of thrones (and I'm not talking about house of dragons but the original series) so maybe my standards are very low...

I am an avid Tolkien fan, read everything and quite like the movies, but I couldn’t stomach this - boring, sanctimonious, predictable, ridiculous. Very very sad.

SoupDragon · 06/10/2022 09:25

There is another thread although I don't him it's at all active.

I'm enjoying it. I am not viewing it as a Tolkien fan though, I'm watching it on its own merits and I suspect that may be why.

I have read lord of the rings and loved it and loved the movies too. I couldn't get into the Hobbit and I've been trying to read the silmarillon for 20 years or so but I just can't focus on all the "and then..." Statements.

So I guess I'm the perfect audience for rings of power. Love lotr and and that world but not too educated or immersed in it to find that it contradicts what I know from the Books or my own imagination.

Is there? I went back a couple of pages but couldn't find anything on this board. Maybe I should have done a search.

I do think it's quite flaws in ways that have got nothing to do with the books. For example, the dialogues are pretty vapid. Lots of words especially about light and darkness but they don't seem to mean much. The acting is quite wooden as well especially by the elves (except for galadriel). Maybe they are trying to portray dignity and superiority but it's just coming across as very flat. And I don't really like the harfoot stories or the dwarves one. They are just a bit boring.

I love everything that happens in the south lands and I love that the orcs have got a heart apparently, and someone to fight for their rights and that they have strayed a bit from the pure good Vs pure evil line.

Taking of evil, how creepy are those sociopathic harfoots?? Can't imagine Frodo or Sam being so desperate to leave people behind or deriving so much merriment from the death by bee of one of their friends...

I can't find it now either. It might have been in a different topic. I posted on it and can't find it 😂😂

Maybe the posts were so scathing they had to delete it...😱

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's episode though I've got a feeling they'll focus on harfoots and elrond and the dwarves as they didn't feature in the last Episode.

Maybe I should post on aibu:

Aibu to somehow find the love story involving Arondir and Bronwyn really touching?

I like it. It's a bit cheesy but the so are the books. Totally caught up on who Sauron will turn out to be now. And love the dwarves.

QueenOfThorns · 06/10/2022 23:25

We’re enjoying it too. The dwarves are great, but the elves are disappointing. And I am also troubled by the harfoots (harfeet?), they aren’t very nice. I’m not happy about Sauron, but I can’t see any other possibilities unless he isn’t someone we’ve already met.

FivePotatoesHigh · 06/10/2022 23:26

We’re enjoying it. The trick is not to think too deeply about any of it!

Who do you think might be sauron? I would love it to be one of the existing characters to make him morally ambiguous rather than pure evil.

Oh talking of not thinking about it too deeply. .. does harfoot come from hairy feet???

A lot of people seem to think it's Halbrand which I think they have used the conversation with Adar to suggest but I am not yet convinced. Can't see how it's anyone else already introduced so maybe someone new..

ByTheGrace · 07/10/2022 10:38

I'm finding it a bit hard to keep track, partly because I want to binge, but husband is a watch one episode and not want another for a day or two person.

I love the scenery, the costumes and the sets. The acting is OK. The Harfoots are a boring tangent and a bit creepy, Lenny Henry is a distraction, I'm not a fan of him generally, but it's difficult to see him as anything other than Lenny Henry.

I think it was started about the fact that Amazon had locked the reviews... the problem is that "threads I'm on" has an option to remove threads from the list with no way of getting them back again. So, if you can't remember where it was or a key word or something, you've got no hope of finding it again. I think I might have done this as I was enjoying the programme and others weren't.

SoupDragon · 07/10/2022 11:15

I think the main acting is fine.

I've no idea who Sauron is. Speculation is indeed pointing to Halbrand but I'm not sure how. I've not been looking at it too deeply at all.

I'm enjoying it, I've read all the LOTR books and seen all the films, watching this with an open mind and yes it's not perfect but overall it's been good

SoupDragon · 07/10/2022 12:48

CrossPurposes · 07/10/2022 12:02

Yes!

Quveas · 07/10/2022 13:04

It has it's faults (what doesn't) but as a huge fan of ToR I am enjoying it because it does something that Tolkien - a product of his age and background - didn't. It puts women in the picture. I have always thought that Galadriel deserved her place more in the lore. And the portrayal of the driven Galadriel treading a fine line between good and evil plays so well into the depth of knowledge she later has to know not to accept the Ring from Frodo.

Entwifery · 07/10/2022 13:10

I'm really enjoying it. The acting is fine as well, not sure why people are saying it's not good? I'm a massive Tolkien fan and have read all the books multiple times and don't really mind the changes they have made.

I feel it's wooden. Especially the elves. Maybe it's not so much the acting but the dialogues.

I'm trying to read the silmarillon again but I'm just not getting into it.

Just waiting for the kids to go to bed so we can watch episode 7. 🙃

Yes, I don't mind that she isn't all serene and mature yet. She still has thousands of years to mature. I quite like what they have done with her.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 07/10/2022 19:21

I'm enjoying it. I like that the elves are more personable, I think it's realistic that they become colder and more distant as they spend thousands of years on middle earth.

There's theories that halbrand becomes the witch king or the cursed betrayer in the mountain pass who saves the day with legolas.

I think they've had too many characters to do proper story building

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/10/2022 19:21

I’m enjoying though I find the harfoot stuff a bit dull

really enjoying durin & Elrond though agree that generally the elves are not portrayed well (celebrimbor looking about 60?? Do they not know elves don’t age??) arondir is the most elven elf

weirdly and also enjoying Adar - so good to look at the orcs as more than mindless killing machines

certain Halbrand isn’t Sauron as It’s too obvious

I don’t mind the slow pace as they’re still world building & there are over 40 episodes to go

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 07/10/2022 19:22

100% this. Really like this area of the show
