Anyone watching this? What do you think?

I know it's got super bad reviews but I love it. In spite of the wooden acting, the cringe worthy dialogues and the dodgy accents. I normally don't like action but I'm loving the fight scenes. And I love Arondir, the elf and the other Southlanders, including the orcs and Adar.

However, I haven't watched any TV (or any movies) since game of thrones (and I'm not talking about house of dragons but the original series) so maybe my standards are very low...

I've been enjoying this, I think I hadn't had any expectation from it, so it seemed a pleasant surprise. It looks stunning and reminiscent of the Peter Jackson films. We read the Hobbit as children and I loved LOTR films. I think by the last LOTR book ROTK, the writing style is quite formal, as are the appendices, so I guess it is taking some of the tone from this? Showing events of ancient legend - but maybe the reality was not the same, if they're taking liberties. I think it has been a slow burn, which has ramped up in the last couple of episodes.

Joseph Mawle is fabulous, elements of his character, Jedediah Shine in Ripper Street - evil, but with depth. I have no idea who Sauron is, but hope we haven't seen him yet, that he is hiding in the shadows.

If I struggled with the first episode (found it cheesy and boring and badly acted and picked up my phone halfway through to mindlessly scroll) but loved the original films is it worth giving it another go/continuing d'you reckon?

Yes, I found the first episode a bit slow, but the second was much better, especially the dwarves!

Thank you!! ....I'll try another episode then. I really wanted to like it.

Yes I do think it gets better. The acting definitely improves and the pace picks up slightly. Till the 6th episode it's mostly world building and scene setting though

Anyone watched the season finale yet? I've just finished. I won't post anything about it yet as I don't want to post spoilers but I enjoyed it. It seems the show has gotten quite a bit of criticism but I just loved being back in middle earth again and overall, I've enjoyed the season.

quirkychick · 14/10/2022 20:44

@Doowop1919 I've watched the finale. I enjoyed it too. I might need a rewatch! I think the whole series looks beautiful and certainly has the same look as Peter Jackson's films. It is definitely a slow burn and then suddenly picks up the pace towards the last few episodes. There were certainly some bits that made me smile and you can really begin to see how it is leading on to the LOTR.

TottersBlankly · 14/10/2022 20:56

Yes, watched it today. It’s a bit of a relief that it’s over for now - weekends have become a bit epic fantasy heavy!

Not quite sure what I think yet, but enjoying all the wrap up reviews - particularly in the New York Times.

I've just finished the finale. I'd watched it all, but was a bit meh but thought this episode was really good. Tied it all back to the appendices properly (which I have read because I'm very sad!) and promising for the next series. I think I might watch it again but not today!

I might watch parts of episode 8 and 6 again. I almost never watch TV so it seems like quite a long time to wait for the next season. Apparently it's going to start only in October 23 again.

Topgub · 08/11/2022 13:48

Just watched the whole series.

Lots to enjoy (Elrond and durin, although I'm a bit concerned by durin power hungry wife)

The pacing was all off for me though.

6 eps of not much then bam, with no real explanation the elven rings of power were made and sauron revealed.

Mmmm. Didn't make much sense

DashboardConfessional · 22/12/2022 06:46

I really enjoyed it. Although finding Robert Aramayo as Elrond very wooden. I hate Game of Thrones and a few of them are sweeping about formally as if they're in that.

Unfortunately now if you google Rings of Power the cast comes up and the photo of an actor has "Sauron" under it instead of the name we are first given. 😑
