Noticed completely by chance that this is back (Wednesday, C4 8pm).

Hi Soupy! I've been looking for a thread. Just watching the first episode now. What a first challenge! A bloody six seater table.

When I was clearing my folks' house I found the pencil case I made in 2nd year high school woodwork. It was used as a sewing box. The sliding lid still works and the joints aren't bad - but I was really glad when we rotated from wood & metalwork to Home Ec & sewing!

SoupDragon · 25/09/2022 22:42

I thought I was alone!

we didn't get to make anything useful in woodwork at school.

We had to make wooden spatulas at school in woodwork. I wish they’d give them more time on the programme. It’s a bit like they’re setting them up to not do a great job.

SoupDragon · 25/09/2022 22:53

I suppose "anyone" can do a good job given the time. Adding a tight timescale highlights the more talented.

I worry about the waste of wood… What happens to it all after each programme? At least on Bake Off, they can eat it.

SoupDragon · 25/09/2022 23:03

With Sewing Bee they get the garments back (eventually). I imagine they get the pieces they've made back in this too.

I think the offcuts of wood are used in other projects, used for fuel in the burners etc. And they plant trees to replace those used.

I really like Jacob, Calum & Dafydd so far. I hope all the ladies get their 'spotlight' too. They seem to have all gelled really well this year as a group, helping each other out.

SoupDragon · 06/10/2022 09:40

I think I would have sent Daffydd home this week. I didn't think his plane met the brief really.

slme gorgeous toys though! The workbench was just adorable!

I agree Soupy. It'd get about 2 minutes play. But then Sarah's was really unfinished. I'd have played with that one Jacob made ( had to think carefully how to word that) 😄

SoupDragon · 06/10/2022 18:55

Yes, finished Sarah's would have got hours and hours of imaginative play. Plus I feel it had a better finish to it.

i would also loved to have played with Jacob's tools 🤣 That said, I have my own real ones in the garage. the plane he made was just amazing!

I’m really enjoying this. Some insanely talented people. Jacobs toy woodworking station was so beautiful. The saw alone was worthy of woodworker of the week . I thought Daffyd would go this time round. He had a lucky escape. Such a shame Sarah didn’t finish because I agree it would have had great play value.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2022 21:02

Jacob's was my favourite this week (again!) I love his style. I don't disagree with Russell getting Woodworker of the week though.

Just discovered this thread - thanks, @SoupDragon ! I loved Ashley's William Morris daybed, I was really sorry to see her go tonight. I thought it would be Chloe, the strain seemed to be getting to her and her desk wobbled. Jacob is very good, but he seemed a bit smug tonight. And I'm not sure he knew what Mel was talking about when she did the Mr Tumnus imitation with his chair legs - I thought that was really funny, but he just looked nonplussed!

SoupDragon · 03/11/2022 08:26

I laughed at Mr Tumnus too. You're right, Jacob had no idea.

It could easily have been either Chloe or Ashley who went this week, they both made mistakes.

Squizzas · 03/11/2022 10:51

I was looking for a thread for this and couldn't find one. I was really surprised that Ashley went last night. Her vase was ok and her table looked better than Chloe's. I felt she was far more deserving of a place in the finals. Chloe's vase looked like something a 6 year old would make out of a pile of twigs. Jacob seemed to interpret the desk brief as making something that wasn't in his usual style.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2022 11:16

I think Ashley had dodgy joints on the desk too she'd had to fill plus dodgy dovetails in the drawer plus it was very simple. Chloe's had a slight wobble and she'd missed a design element off. I'm not sure how much weight the "immunity" task plays in the final decision. I imagine it was very close as I wouldn't have been surprised to see with of them sent home this week.

To be fair, neither of them are likely to win the competition, it's between Lauren and Jacob and has been for weeks in my mind.

LaGioconda · 03/11/2022 13:57

Chloe has made some lovely things and possibly benefited from that last night. Her rocking chair was lovely.

Squizzas · 03/11/2022 17:42

Definitely final will be Jacob and Lauren. I still feel Ashley was robbed last night.

LadyAddle · 09/11/2022 22:25

That went to the right person! (I'm being careful in case of spoilers) I thought bars might be a bit naff as a challenge, but all the builds were lovely in their different ways. I shall really miss this programme. I've given up on GBBO, so will have to fall back on Great Australian Bake Off until Sewing Bee or Throw Down come back - the Aussie version is great, but they were cooking wallaby and kangaroo in the last episode I watched. It just didn't feel right .... Kanga and Roo in a pie.

SoupDragon · 09/11/2022 22:54

Not who I wanted to win as I didn't like them particularly. They were absolutely the right winner though, I won't deny that. Something irritated me though.

OP posts:
LaGioconda · 09/11/2022 23:57

I was pleased she won, she's been consistently ahead of the others both in design and the quality of her work.

Suboptimalsitch · 10/11/2022 01:47

I felt it was the right choice too.

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2022 22:18

As did I.

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2023 13:24

Anyone watching this year ?

LaGioconda · 14/11/2023 17:06

Yes. I have a fascination with watching people with these skills that I will never have. Not sure who I want to win, probably Nathaniel. Hell of a shame when Nate went out 😀
