On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

Omg it's not on today is it 😭 I really thought it was I'll just have to wait for it tomorrow now.

Has Harry had a look through the pen drive? I don't think he has. He's just got Janice's word for it. Maybe if has looked he would have seen it was Edgar perhaps? But I think Janice said it had pictures of children so more than one...I've got my suspicions on Edgar's mother...

TheMadGardener · 02/10/2022 21:10

The journalist was already in the USA and had gone to see Grieff on another matter - asking him about Janice was an extra and not the reason for her trip.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 02/10/2022 21:18

Of course we only have Janice's word for it that there were images of CSA on the drive at all..... No idea how or why that would work, just throwing it out there.

I thought that but then if the flash drive didn't have CSA images then why would Edgar's note have mentioned a "paedo"?

Good point. I was trying to remember whether they'd actually said it out loud when discussing the contents of the drive, but forgot about the note.

MistressIggi · 03/10/2022 00:06

Edgar is a bit old isn't he..? If he was abused as a child I mean, I suppose pictures could have been transferred to a computer. I really though the vicar moved to stand behind the tutor when she had the laptop open, I thought he saw them himself. I don't think anyone is going to turn out to have an evil secret, I think the premise is more about ordinary people being capable of murder in extraordinary circumstances. (Though I remain convinced I would not behave the way they are doing!)

Supersimkin2 · 03/10/2022 00:16

Janice as Edgar’s abuser? No less likely than being locked up by a vicar of unlikely moral purity.

Rumpleteezer · 03/10/2022 09:48

Wondering if there is any significance to both Janice and Grieff turning Beth’s card over to look at both sides? Also some time has now elapsed as Beth tells Grieff at the beginning of the second episode she has been out for coffees regularly with Janice over the past six months. So intrigued to see where this goes.

Goldpaw · 03/10/2022 11:29

I also thought it was on last night!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2022 11:39

DT definitely stood behind Janice in episode one to look at the images when she first used the flash drive. He saw the images too

Mooserp · 03/10/2022 14:07

I'm looking forward to it. I hope Beth turns out to be more than what she seems.

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 14:23

Caught the first two episodes by chance last night and came on to see if anyone else was watching. I thought it was excellent - so looking forward to the next two.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 26/09/2022 21:38

I do properly love Stanley Tucci though

Same here!

Plus the scene on the tube where all of the women let that scrote know what was what was ACE!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2022 15:00

Just seems weird a vicar would go dooooooooooooown fir someone who isn’t fam,ily

assume he will find out tonight that he’s dead so can tell Janice that it was Edgar

. He lets her go and she will kill the pair of them

msy end up like war of the roses. When both die at the end

I thought he ave Edgar the flash drive to get his fingerprints on it. But I was wrong.

Some ridiculous courses of action - but it's engrossing.

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 18:08

BarnacleNora · 27/09/2022 00:23

Oooh I really liked this! How did Janice manage to txt the journalist though? Did I blink and miss that bit?

Also does the vicar's wife have an extraordinarily well paying job?! Because that is quite an astounding vicarage if she doesn't! Never seen one that beautiful before and I've seen a couple! They're usually a bit more....careworn than that aren't they?!

I said exactly the same to DH.

I've been inside a couple of very large, old vicarages, and they tend to look at least mildly dilapidated on the outside and be very largely uninhabitable inside - often a number of rooms will be totally unused because they are riddled with damp and mould.

This one looks vair' naice.

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 18:09

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 02/10/2022 21:18

But didn't Harry the Vicar take a quick look at them too, and then start to panic?

Jellykat · 03/10/2022 20:45

Such a good programme!
I cant tell which way any of its gonna go, plus fantastic acting.. and its got an extra element you dont see often, thats very 'Twin Peaks'

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 03/10/2022 21:13

So the police are going to come. Want to check his hard drive off the back of this and he gets done for child abuse images anyway even though Edgar is dead. Wife kills Janice.

Yet to work out the Stanley Tucci relevance

Cocolapew · 03/10/2022 21:22

I thought I enjoyed the first 2 but 5 minutes of this one has given me the rage, the vicar taking the fall as a pedophile, not to mention locking a woman in his cellar, is just ridiculous.
DH is going to watch to the end so I'll see how it pans out.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 03/10/2022 21:27

Janice is a murderer or at least a socio/psychopath she's weird.

Jellykat · 03/10/2022 21:29

Janice is clever, great mind games with the wife.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 03/10/2022 21:30

Yeah but the wife has the measure of her

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 03/10/2022 21:36

Now I’ve given in to the escalation of events I’ve got to say I’m enjoying it now

the think of it like a Doctor Who episode helped immensely 😁
