I couldn't see an existing thread on this, apologies if there is and I missed it.

Anyway, as it says in the thread title. New series starts tonight.

Yay!

I really hate custard so am not looking forward to any of next weeks creations !

I love custard!

Now I've started watching the Australian Bake Off the issues with this one are even more obvious.

Watching both at the same time may well confuse me.

Emotionalsupportviper · 19/10/2022 09:37

So do I @knittingaddict - custard is the best.

I would possibly even eat liver if there was custard on it.
🤔

Possibly.

Also agree re: Aussie Bake Off.
I am eternally grateful to @Maireas for suggesting it.
I wish I could get the early series, too - I might trawl Youtube, just to see.

awaynboilyurheid · 19/10/2022 09:50

I can’t stand Paul he really only likes the younger woman on the programme, the handshake thing is really overplayed and a bit much as if they should swoon at his handshake!
We also thought it was odd to have Halloween this week and custard next week, someone got timings wrong there! Also it’s a baking show the dressing up seemed silly especially as Matt Prue and Paul ignored it.
I’m looking forward to custard week, sounds delish!

jay55 · 19/10/2022 09:51

I'm on team custard is vile. Glad we don't have smell o vision as the smell of warming milk is the worst.

longtompot · 19/10/2022 10:10

It was odd having hallowe'en this early, though if my neighbours watch this show I'm sure they enjoyed it as they have had their decorations up for two weeks already! Those s'mores looked ok but they aren't what s'mores are imo. The whole point is it does melt including the chocolate and you do get all messy when eating them. The apple cakes looked delicious and I could quite happily eat a slice of pretty much all of them. The final challenge was unrealistic. The time limit for what they had to do, to quote Prue 'exquisitely' was too much. To make something that was tough enough to hang but easy enough to break? Sandros florentines should have been flat and then they might have been able to eat them, but I did love the look of his disco skull ball.

Love custard so looking forward to next weeks. I made a custard filled cake once called Brooklyn Blackout cake and it was delicious!

I wonder if there is going to be an overuse of gelatine? 🤔

Hate custard boak

We've been on holiday to Yorkshire a few times and only recently discovered that Yorkshire appears to be the home of the custard slice. Who knew? (probably loads of you). Every farm shop had them and they were sooo good.

reigatecastle · 19/10/2022 10:43

PrincessScarlett · 18/10/2022 21:04

I don't like Paul and Prue smashing everyone's bakes

No, all that effort and they just smashed them! They could have sliced a neat slice off to try Grin

reigatecastle · 19/10/2022 10:43

I like custard. And custard slices.

knittingaddict · 19/10/2022 10:45

They said they were for smashing though, didn't they? I'm sure Pru mentioned pinatas before they started baking.

LadyEloise1 · 19/10/2022 10:48

I thought the competitors' bakes were great fun ( some better executed than others ).
I'm in awe at some of the creativity.

TheGhostOfLiz · 19/10/2022 10:54

There were some great ideas for bakes. But I am getting mighty sick of seeing talented people rush a job rather than be given an extra hour (say) and doing it properly to be judged on their best work.

Or seeing cakes slide off the plate because there is not enough cooling time. If you want to keep the 4 hour deadline then give them 2 x 2 hours with an hour break in the middle for adequate cooling.

Or seeing breads and buns as a tight knot of dough because there wasn't enough proving time.

If I wanted to see people muck up a bake because they were rushing, I could put a mirror up in my own kitchen Halloween Grin

Yes so do I

And too hard challenges for the time allowed

All of this.

Especially the last sentence . . .

As I mentioned before I find it disappointing that Sandro has had some sort of cake business in his past-selling to celebs etc.

Was Paul's comment about one of Sandro's bakes-and I am paraphrasing-but something along the lines of "this looks like something you'd buy in a shop" a bit of shit stirring??

knittingaddict · 19/10/2022 11:43

I will be surprised if Sandro wins no matter how good he is. I don't think it will go down well if he does. Happy to be wrong because I'm basically suggesting that the competition will be fixed.

Yes I know they said they were going to smash them but just seemed such a shame when so much effort had gone in.

It's a difficult one as I'm sure Sandro would have been checked out before joining the show. He's denied ever accepting payment for the cake he made for Stormzy/Maya Jama.

I know a couple of people who make cakes (brilliant looking cakes) as a hobby and have social media pages showing off their cakes which have attracted attention from celebrities but they would never be classed as 'working as a professional chef' which is what you can't be to appear on Bake Off.

As for the judges saying Sandro's bake looked like something from a shop, they say that several times every year to various contestants.

I like Sandro and his bakes but I don't think he will win as there are at least 2 others that are far superior at baking than him.

woodhill · 19/10/2022 12:10

His bakes always involve alcohol

PrincessScarlett · 19/10/2022 12:17

Yes, I don't like alcohol in every bake and he always comments that he's going to win over the judges with a boozy bake.

LadyEloise1 · 19/10/2022 12:30

I swore I wouldn't watch it when it changed to Channel 4 but I got sucked in last season and this season.
I too wish they'd give the contestants enough time.
It's not as if it can't be edited for tv viewing.

shadypines · 19/10/2022 13:04

Yes it gets on my nerves that they don't have a reasonable amount of time in any cooking programmes. Bread, cake, meat etc etc takes a certain amount of time, no contestant is able to hurry that up.. it's the laws of physics/science.
'Bakers, Prue wants you to make a Victoria Sponge that looks like the Taj Mahal...you have 5 minutes..bake!'

woodhill · 19/10/2022 13:21

Yes the briefs seem to have become more and more difficult

It used to be more low key with Mary Berry

Toddlerteaplease · 19/10/2022 13:56

I'm getting bored of the whole programme now. I used to watch religiously. But really can't be bothered now.

Piggywaspushed · 19/10/2022 17:56

Me too. There is always a contestant I really warm to and this year it is Janusz, so I am only watching out of loyalty to him, really.

Pottery throwdown and Sewing Bee have taken over GBBO's comfort blanket lovely telly mantle.
