I couldn't see an existing thread on this, apologies if there is and I missed it.

Anyway, as it says in the thread title. New series starts tonight.

Yay!

If I had a star baker prize to give out & Sandro was there, I'd give him one.

ConstancetheGardener · 12/10/2022 00:18

I thought I read that he was a professional baker until a few years ago. I think they are barred if they've done it within five years or something but otherwise ok.

knittingaddict · 12/10/2022 07:45

I know this is probably a strange thing to say about a competition, but I'm finding this series just too negative. Paul is being a complete arse to the older women, almost nothing seems to get praised and the general vibe is a bit flat. Not helped by the horribly unfunny Noel and Matt.

Either the bakers are a bit rubbish this year or the challenges are too tricky in the time allotted. I feel sorry for the bakers.

Dawn deserves a commendation for trying to put Paul back in his box. She looked like she had enough of his obvious bias against older women. Good for her.

There's an article in the Metro about Sandro having made cakes for a couple of celebrities. It appears he had at least a sideline in baking commercially. Hmm.

MrsMitford3 · 12/10/2022 08:20

I also feel a bit disappointed that Sandro has done some professional baking-just puts a bad taste in your mouth (see what I did there?)

The show seems to have slipped so far away from the original premise-
just home bakers baking things-not Mexican week with them in horrific cringe sombreros and capes etc. Trying much too hard when we all or at least I loved it for it's amateur bakers and actual baking tasks that I'd want to try to make and eat. For goodness sake after one year I bought a magimix in costco.

I also wanted to scream when Paul called Dawn Mum. That was not an accident. Not funny and not ok.

Fizbosshoes · 12/10/2022 08:23

Next week clip looked like they are wearing costumes/Halloween fancy dress/make up.

What on earth for?? Its meant to be about baking...?Confused
And next week won't be the closest episode to Halloween anyway ....

Yes, agree with all this.

augustusglupe · 12/10/2022 09:28

I thought the same about Paul's comment to Dawn...
How old does Paul think he is exactly? Paunchy bloke mid 50s thinks a lady a few years older than him is like his mum?!!! Prat 🙄

Halsall · 12/10/2022 10:08

Well, I’m not happy to find that Sandro was a semi-pro baker in the past.

And 100% agree with the comments re Paul's snide remarks to any woman over about 40 (& said as much myself upthread). Prue's doing more and more hasty jumping-in to try and backtrack for him. Not acceptable.

LadyEloise1 · 12/10/2022 10:51

I'm not a great cook or baker so can only watch in awe.
Some of those creations last night !!!!
Janusz, Syabira, Sandro and Maxy are sooo good.
I thought Abdul upped his game last night.
Paul Hollywood is so up himself 🙄
Pru tries to defuse the nastiness.
According to the Metro, Sandro has baked cakes, including a cake with an edible globe, for Stormzy, Perrie Edwards and Talia Storm. They came from Sandro's Cakery, which may have been a sideline business. He may have just fronted the business and someone else baked the cakes ?
I think it will be very hard to call the winner.

newnamethanks · 12/10/2022 15:33

Paul, yuk. Bet he asks his young girlfriends to call him Daddy. Time to look for a new job dad.

knittingaddict · 12/10/2022 15:43

We are going to start watching the Australian Bake Off this week. Only series 4, 5 and 6 of channel 4? Is that right?

bibliomania · 12/10/2022 19:07

Tbf, I still like the individual bakers themselves.

Yes - I could only find those three series. Really enjoyed them.

This has really upset me! He has deleted the Sandro's Cakery Insta and Facebook but all his you-tube cake tutorials are still there. Does seem unfair, though he is lovely and comes over very modest and likeable.

Paul mum-zoning Dawn - twice - was outrageous but I guess that's what happens when you date much younger women, you lose awareness of your own actual age. Dawn should have said "That's funny, you remind me of my dad".

Emotionalsupportviper · 12/10/2022 19:53

Paul hugely annoys me when he dismisses older women like this.

He's no great catch himself

Laska2Meryls · 12/10/2022 20:03

I still haven't forgiven Paul for the nastiness towards Jurgen , Handshake for everyone but him, when he was probably a better baker than Hollywood is..

Laska2Meryls · 12/10/2022 20:06

A d yeah a misogynistic git towards any woman he doesn't fancy
.. ( but hell, I still watch it ) .. Abdul's
space cake was fabulous, and Carol was the only one where the surprise actually looked as it should . But yes she was going home after those puds ..

I'd forgotten about that. What an arse he was then and Jurgen was so lovely. It's clear PH is a bit of a bully. It's a shame that he is so tied up in the Bake Off brand as I would love to see him replaced.

He appears to be called Nelson on those videos, rather than Sandro 🤔

longtompot · 12/10/2022 20:31

I saw Ruby Tandohs Twitter post today about being blocked by Paul Hollywood. I wonder what that was about?

Yes - that was horribly rude, and very spiteful.

Jealousy is an ugly emotion, Paul.

That's interesting

My first experiences of lemon meringue pie were having it from a packet with a little sphere of lemon flavour that popped as you cooked the filling 😂

I remember that too. My mum made it loads in the 70's and 80's🙈. I think it came in a packet that said 'Green's'

knittingaddict · 13/10/2022 05:48

There was definitely Greens cheescake mix, so you could be right about the lemon meringue pie mix. I remember them, but not the brand.
