I couldn't see an existing thread on this, apologies if there is and I missed it.

Anyway, as it says in the thread title. New series starts tonight.

Yay!

The show stopper seems to get more impossible/weird every year.
There's normally a favourite memory or self portrait at some stage. (Make a life size 3d model of yourself using brandy snaps and 4 different types of meringue for example)

It's anyone else just not enjoying this series? Almost desperate 'new' challenges - chocolate on a Garibaldi FFS and those revolting savoury cakes? The contestants picked for TV rather than just a bunch of people who can bake. I'm fed up with letchy Noel too, he makes my flesh creep.

Sadly, I have to agree with you.

Bring back Mel and Sue and decent challenges!

LemonRedwood · 30/09/2022 13:40

I was afraid this would happen when it moved to Channel 4. The first couple of years were ok, but last year and this year especially it seems to be more outlandish challenges combined with not giving a decent amount of time to produce something edible, all in an attempt to up the drama.

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/09/2022 14:44

I wish the producers would accept that it doesn't need drama - the people (like ourselves) who watch this show enjoy seeing good baking, cooks of all ages and backgrounds, and a lot of skill and imagination. The drama comes from the bakes themselves - there's no pleasure in watching someone's hard work collapse because they haven't had time to bake it properly to there right consistency etc.

(We also like to see them helping each other out - or at least, I do. To me, one of the great joys of Bake-off, Pottery Throw-Down, Sewing Bee etc, is how they will help each other understand recipes and patterns and give each other advice and support when there is a disaster. I like to see people do well, and I like to see them being kind.)

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/09/2022 14:45

*the right consistency, not there - sorry

It happens to all the shows where they get real people on to interact (rather than just a straight forward game-show like Millionaire). Starts off being interesting, ends up with weird psychological games and tricks, odd 'characters' and then fades away

Fizbosshoes · 30/09/2022 17:50

It doesn't help that Noel and Matt seem like they haven't the faintest interest in any of the food/flavours/techniques etc.
And then they make awkward and unfunny comments and jokes where you can tell the contestants are just forcing a polite laugh (except Jurgen last year who didn't pretend to find Matt funny ....which only improved my opinion of him but!) but don't actually find them funny at all. Sue and Mel seemed interested and sympathetic to the contestants if things went wrong.

LadyEloise1 · 30/09/2022 19:18

I loved the look of the Fanny Craddock one. Blush

woodhill · 30/09/2022 21:17

Noel's skinny jeans are too much

Tres leches cake for show stopper, I hope it isn't tres leches in the form of your grandad or something.

Wolfcub · 04/10/2022 20:00

Evening all

littlbrowndog · 04/10/2022 20:03

Evening

jay55 · 04/10/2022 20:03

Evening.
This is a better bread than in bread week.

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 20:04

Greetings @Wolfcub and @littlbrowndog

MrsMitford3 · 04/10/2022 20:04

Mexican week?

Seriously-it's Bake off not a travel show.

All these laboured themes and last weeks grim, inedible showstoppers is just to much.
Do the producers not see we just want lovely, covetable creations?

I am losing interest.

*also please put contestants names up when they are on screen-still not sure who is who...

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 20:05

I like Syabira - I'd like her or Janosz to win.

jay55 · 04/10/2022 20:06

Every week I think the tall guy with glasses is new.

I'm with you here.

Stop looking for gimmicks - just give us outstanding baking that we could copy at home please.

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 20:08

He issuing my little choppy thing!

I've got one just the same!

<feels world famous>

littlbrowndog · 04/10/2022 20:08

Rember the time I think was a semi final on a boiling hot day they had to cook pitta bread over an open fire

Wolfcub · 04/10/2022 20:09

I'm hating Paul and Pru correcting peoples pronunciation it's unnecessarily patronising

PrincessScarlett · 04/10/2022 20:11

This is dull so far.

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 20:11

I would repeat it back to them in an over-exaggerated and sarcastic manner

jay55 · 04/10/2022 20:12

This is a bit weird where they're all making different types of buns.
They wouldn't have Chelsea and Belgium buns and rock cakes in the same round.
