Anyway, as it says in the thread title. New series starts tonight.

They reminded me of the things that used to be on my mum's Family Circle magazines in the 70s.

Reminds me of the Friends episode when Rachel make the trifle and the cookbook pages stuck together and accidentally made half trifle half shephards pie.
All seemed equally unappealing tonight.

Having said that they were right to send no one home and 2 next week!

What a horrible challenge. A lot of skill to getting it right, I'm sure, but lordy who would want to eat them?

Honestly, every time they did the little grpahic to say what each baker was making, it made me feel slightly nauseous.

They looked and sounded so unappetising.

Why can't it be like the very early episodes where they were given a (comparatively) simple task to carry out and time to do it?

I'm sure most of us would much rather see a lot of beautifully presented cakes/ breads/pies etc which look delicious - and which we could say to ourselves "That looks lovely! I'm going to have a go at that." rather than think "Xst onna bike! Who the heck thought a liver and custard layer cake with anchovy buttercream, in the form of the Destruction of the Second Temple was a good idea?"

I want to be able to enjoy seeing lovely food as well as the lovely bakers (and they are lovely - but I was a bit surprised that no-one explained the technique of "feathering" to the two who didn't know - it's not a state secret and it would have been a kindness).

I'm off now to check if the woodworker thing is on tonight.

Yes. They don't need to be brand new challenges every time. It's OK to ask this lot to make something well, that has been asked for in previous series.

I caught up thus morning after work. All very off putting.

I would think that they didn't get rid of one of the due to two being absent. The excuse they were all too amazing didn't wash after those monstrosities. The woman with the colourful hair and the stewing steak pizza woman weren't great this week were they.

The Swedish torte monstrosities reminded me of the birthday cakes blue Peter used to make for the pets in the 1970s.

Take a ton of dog food and cover it in butter icing... get down Shep... oh look here's one the studio assistant I made earlier.

It's anyone else just not enjoying this series? Almost desperate 'new' challenges - chocolate on a Garibaldi FFS and those revolting savoury cakes? The contestants picked for TV rather than just a bunch of people who can bake. I'm fed up with letchy Noel too, he makes my flesh creep.

It's nowhere near as good as it used to be sadly.

I've swung from liking to being irritated by some contestants.
But I'm still struggling with names.
And the weird challenges, I think, are throwing off bakers who would usually be quite competent.

We've had obscure bakes before that have not always been great to watch but do level the playing field.

Having familiar things made weird works against the more experienced bakers and annoys the audience.

I'm enjoying but I could enjoy it so much more.
