New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

looks good

It's not an easy watch at all
They all need to have a big row ! Get it out in the open.
Could be the death of the child has made them all clam up completely and not be normal with each other ? My late mil could give people the silent treatment for hours , so I know what that is like! It is awkward and uncomfortable. She was controlling.

MissyB1 · 15/08/2022 15:37

The saddest bit to me was when their daughter was clearly hoping for advice from her mum but none was forthcoming! When her horrible boyfriend went to the toilet she told her mum that he had told her to stop drinking, and that he kept talking about marriage. Why on earth didn’t Emma warn her? Or at least arrange to meet up for a coffee and a chat?
Instead she just seemed perfectly ok with it - even though she definitely wasn’t!!

I've watched the lot. Hurry up you lot o need to discuss it 🤣

Start a spoiler thread !
There are already two threads : just make sure it's headed up as big spoilers ahead!

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 16:02

Emma clearly doesn't want to upset her daughter by saying she should leave him etc.
Maybe the daughter should go on mumsnet..

Southeastdweller · 15/08/2022 16:06

I think it’s totally credible that Emma wouldn’t say anything (yet) to her daughter about him, not just after the first time she’s met him. Again I thought that was pretty realistic.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/08/2022 16:43

I thought it was really good. Very like a play rather than a TV drama - a lot was unsaid, and the actions and body language were just as - more - significant as the dialogue. Really well-observed, and skilfully written and acted.

SueSaid · 15/08/2022 16:48

I think it makes a refreshing change to see the dullness of many people's lives, the dysfunction in many families.

The acting is excellent, every scene makes you cringe and makes you want to shout at them to stop it, they are clearly hiding a lifetime of being fucked up.

The Dad I think is misguidedly trying to chat to the girl at he gym as he seems to find it impossible to chat to his own daughter seemingly unaware he is coming across as creepy.

I hope it has a feel good ending, that even with the tragedy and dullness they've endured they'll find happiness but you just get the feeling it's going to unravel horribly.

I'm on episode 3 in tears ☹️

Pemba · 15/08/2022 17:07

N0 SPOILERS please

Ilovetea33 · 15/08/2022 17:11

I'm intrigued enough by the holes in the narration to watch more, but I wouldn't be surprised if the writer just set us up and isn't going to answer all the questions.
And yes, those of you who want to discuss later episodes, please start a different thread clearly marked SPOILERS.

Just finished episode 1 , what a strange drama .

It's all very well showing how bored the couple are in their marriage but showing us that, bores us, the viewers .

None of them seem to have redeeming characteristics , even the receptionist at the gym was weird when she met up with her boyfriend at the pub.

Not sure whether to watch tonight.....usually in dramas, something happens in the first episode to catch our interest but nothing did in this one.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 15/08/2022 17:24

It wasn’t just the lack of advice from her mum it was the lack of any response whatsoever … she just continued stacking the plates and left the room!!

She said later her dd had terrible taste in men. Maybe she's seen it all before, offered advice in the past and it wasn't welcome hence their rather tense relationship.

She might have learnt to nod, smile and wait to pick up the pieces.

See, I thought there was loads to catch our interest. The bereavement, the underlying tension over her still working (and his implied jealousy of her boss) and his redundancy, the weird interaction at the gym, the daughter and her controlling boyfriend - I didn’t find it boring at all. On the contrary, I thought it was really gripping.
