New drama starts sun and mon for 1&2

then 3&4 following week on Sunday and Monday

the lovely Nicola Walker and Sean Bean

The acclaimed British actors play Ian and Emma, who are a couple navigating the ups and downs of their 30-year partnership.

They are parents to Jessica (Chantelle Alle) and are dealing with their fears and insecurities as the drama explores the risks and gifts of a long-term relationship.

Marriage on BBC1 sees married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) negotiate the ups and downs of their 27-year marriage. They've dealt with all the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages. The drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship.

When we first meet married couple Ian and Emma they’re in a Spanish airport returning from a lovely holiday — and bickering over a baked potato! By the time they’re on the plane it’s a full blown argument, setting the scene for what’s to come in this four-part series.

looks good

I missed the girl in the pub toilets bit, can someone fill me in please?

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 11:12

The dad and the brother don't like her much.
I found that strange as he seems the weird one not her.

He clearly isn't looking for a job. Maybe he needs one.

Yes he does

too much time on his hands

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 11:19

Maybe he doesn't have the confidence to get another job? Maybe he can't face it or had a break down when his mum died ?
Maybe she'll snap at him once it's clear he won't look for work ?
Maybe she'll end up leaving him for Jamie?

Southeastdweller · 15/08/2022 11:32

Think he’s depressed now he’s lost his purpose. It’s very realistic for men of that age.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 11:36

Yes, trying to start a conversation with someone clearly not that interested in him or the chit chat beyond ' have a nice day' was realistic. He didn't pick up on her body language of ' go away '
NW always plays slightly awkward characters; she was the same in the Halifax programme too. She was self conscious about the new jacket. The otter two colleagues do not seem to like her much either.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 11:37

Other not otter

UrsulaPandress · 15/08/2022 11:41

I thought it was uncomfortable viewing in a good way. I’ll definitely be sticking with it.

SpinCityBlues · 15/08/2022 11:43

It's being reported negatively in terms of viewers' comments in the Mirror, Mail and Express, yet the Mail's reviewer and the Guardian's reviewer are keen.

Is it because the reviewers will have watched the whole thing, or because they can't bring themselves to criticise St Sean Bean and St Nicola Walker? I'd be a bit conflicted too tbh, as their recent TV dramas have been excellent.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/08/2022 12:03

I gave it 45 minutes before I switched off in utter boredom.

It's a huge "NO THANKS" from me, which is a shame. I'd expected something so much better.

This is true

he feels he has no worth

I found it hardworking and intriguing in equal measure. I will watch tonight too. Some of the little things were well observed; tidying the daughters room and surrounded by boxes in their room at bed time, brilliant!
Lots of layers.

I think a lot of women get enough of that at home in real life without having to watch it on the telly.

Ian was awkwardly trying to make conversation with a young woman (Maxine) who worked at the leisure centre. She hid in the staff room to try and get away from him.

Maxine then went to meet her boyfriend in a pub, goes to the ladies and doesn't come out again. We see the boyfriend knocking on the door of the ladies and calling her but she doesn't come out so he goes in.

It then cuts to a scene where she's smiling and showing off an engagement ring to someone.

Odd but intriguing.

LadyEloise1 · 15/08/2022 13:29

Most people commenting didn't like it but critics seemed to have liked it.
I find that often that shows- movies / tv that critics pan, the public like and shows-movies / tv the critics love the general public dislike.

foxlover47 · 15/08/2022 13:34

I binged it all ... insomnia so thought what the heck
I wonder if there will be a second series

Romeiswheretheheartis · 15/08/2022 14:08

She was really rude to her colleagues when she first went in, snapping at them and blanking the new work experience girl. I hope we find out why (as well as the answers to all of the above!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/08/2022 14:14

He does come across a bit Pervy at the gym

get hot and sweaty

She's probably a bitch. No sign of any friends.

Mike Leigh films draw you in and I think this was trying to be like one of those. I adored Mum too. Couldn't get into 'him and her' at all but only seen one episode, so maybe I gave up too quickly on that.
This was just a bit boring , good actors loading up dishwashers wasn't that riveting either and the boyfriend is clearly dodgy / controlling. Even the cemetery bench scene left me cold.
Good to see James Bolam though and he always plays grumpy old men really well.
The title music was interesting: I think it was jarring because it was so different to a mostly very quiet drama where nothing much happens. The kind of thing you might hear in a very alternative play or drama ?
They are all side stepping each other as the song says ? Jamie clearly fancies Emma , which I found odd too
It was all just very strange.

I didn’t get any hint at all that Jamie fancied Emma, why did you? I know he said her horrible jacket was a nice colour on her. But we’ll see what unfolds with the later episodes.

Anyone here live in Hemel Hempstead? It seems like the dullest town ever as depicted here.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 14:42

Thinking about it maybe I saw too much in the Jamie situation! He just seemed to be sucking up to her as if he liked her , but I'm usually wrong

Southeastdweller · 15/08/2022 14:54

I think he’s aware she’s the lynchpin in the office, the person who runs a tight ship (maybe too tight) and is really well organised (maybe the opposite to him) so he needs her, hence the sucking up. But if I’m right then people like Emma often don’t get on well with their colleagues so maybe that’s why there was a weird atmosphere in the office.

That was really weird wasn't it?

there did seem to be a lot of things being "set up" for future episodes like that.

Supersee · 15/08/2022 15:19

I'm only 20mins in and I'm finding it excruciating.
