Blimey - even better than could have hoped for. Anybody else watching? Had to resist watching more than 3 tonight...

I watched the first two as well. Really good. Very faithful to the original bur with plenty of interesting character development work.

A little disappointed that the revenge on Alex Burgess was so tame and un-terrible.

Glad to find some other watchers here but I was going to suggest that maybe if anyone is going to binge-watch and race ahead maybe there could be a new thread for each 2-3 episodes so that those of us watching at a slower pace can focus on where we are?

I am really liking all the visuals. The dreaming is stunning.

I preferred Lucifer.

I'm not familiar with the source material but I'm really enjoying this and am now halfway through. The visuals are stunning and I do like a fantasy quest narrative. Amazing performances from Charles Dance, David Thewlis and Gwendoline Christie, and Lord Morpheus is oddly hot. The actor does absolutely nothing for me in anything else!

Might start this tonight 😀

DS and I are planning on watching the first one tonight. It's hard to find something we would both like to watch (50s plus 17 year old) so i'm hoping this will fit the bill.

Would it be suitable for a 12 year old?

It's rated 18, and the graphic novel was very graphic. Only watched one episode so far and it was good, and not too adult yet.
I was terrified it would be awful, hope it stays good.

I'd say no.

It's very sweary, there's some sex (no graphic nudity so far) and the violence is quite gory. I suppose it depends on your 12 year old but I think the 18 rating is there for a reason!

I love Neil Gaiman but I can't read graphic novels so I had no prior knowledge before watching. I enjoyed episode 1.

I'm a massive Sandman fan and am really enjoying it so far. I've been watching with my 17 year old DD who hasn't read the graphic novels. I've watched the first six episodes which is roughly the first book. The only episode I didn't enjoy so much was the diner episode. It all looks correct and the casting is excellent. I don't mind the changes in gender and race becay the characters are still themselves. In the horrid Terry pratchett watch adaptation, not only was the casting weird, but the characters were not true to the books on a deeper level. Here they got that right which is a huge relief!

Love the graphic novels, I really enjoyed episode 1. Love that they made Lucian the librarian a woman. Thought the casting of dream was spot on. All those years ago reading the comics (something like 25?? 30 even?) never dreamed I'd see it on TV! Can't wait to see casting for the other endless characters death and delirium especially. I hope this stays popular enough for them to make a game of you and brief lives. Those are the best ones in my opinion. Well done Netflix!!

David Thewlis is so creepy, he's often a bit weird and creepy in things I've seen him in, but he's properly terrifying in this (so far, episode 5).

I can't help thinking of David Thewlis as the Shame Wizard now, though.

No: it's fantasy-horror, and the parts that are horror are really really horror.

I am on episode 4 and absolutely loving it. The comics were a long time ago for me, but honestly - the casting, the acting, the cinematography - it's stunning.

Just finished ep 1. Two things. The bird seen flying about was a magpie, clearly a magpie, then Dream fella complained that his raven had been shot. Also, Dream fella said he'd been caged for over a century. Alex must have been about 10 at the start (pretty sure it was 1916), so he would have to be at least 110 on the night dream fella escaped, which looked to me to be set in the 80's or 90's. Certainly no way he was 110.

I'm surprised they were so sloppy with what was such a big budget show.

Hey, I can't comment on the Raven /magpie thing as I'm no bird expert, but for the age thing I think they do say that the 'dream fellas' presence and his ruby/ sand / helm helped them stay young and live long lives so I guess that explains it.

Good point. I took it from the newspapers (think there was a Sun with a black and white front cover) and the guards talk about holiday destinations that it was 80's but it could plausibility be 2016 or later.

They're not uncommon birds, and magpies in particular are quite distinctive, DH noticed it too. That's going to bug me. It undermines the suspension of disbelief when there are mistakes.

The raven thing explains itself later

I think they're just all generally called ravens in his realm - but the magpie was female , his next o E is a male and is a raven . (
