Blimey - even better than could have hoped for. Anybody else watching? Had to resist watching more than 3 tonight...

I was sad when it finished, I was rationing the last couple of episodes to make it last longer.

I think that this and Good Omens show how much benefit there is in having the original writer involved in a screen adaptation.

Also, did anyone else see the first time Dream meets Hob and think his hair made him look like Noel Fielding's character in The IT Crowd?

I reeeeeally want to like this but I've just watched E3 and it's too slow. Visually it's beautiful and Gordon and the Gargoyle were so lovely but I can't be bothered with the pace.

Do like the librarian lady though.

For some reason I can't for the life of me warm to Jenna Coleman - crikey she's gorgeous though - so that didn't help in this episode.

Namechangeforthis88 · 10/08/2022 16:18

Dream fella does put me in mind of that guy from The Cure.

Just done Ep3 and magpie question remains unanswered.

WhatHaveIFound · 10/08/2022 16:22

DS and I are up to Ep5. Had to miss a day when he was ill and now DH is home and he hasn't watched any of it. Might have to break off until the weekend.

I'm loving it I'm making myself only watch one a day max to eek it out. I am a proper geek for the comics though and as I watch I'm always trying to work out if I'd like it if I hadn't read them. I don't mean that in a snobby way I just wonder if I'd find it too weird/ slow as well without that background knowledge of the characters and story.
Selfishly I want people to stick with it so Netflix make more of them! Maybe try one more?? 😝

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/08/2022 23:56

I really enjoyed this. Ep 6 was my favourite. I liked the way Death was portrayed, and I enjoying the time hopping scenes with Hobb too.

I do hope it gets picked up for a season 2.

Cooroo · 11/08/2022 00:02

Another fan and also just watched episode 6. Not read the books.
Death was amazing although one part was very hard to watch. Also the tavern sequence was excellent (better than the diner which didn't quite work for me).
Definitely planning on reading at least the first book, which my DD has somewhere.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2022 00:09

It's very very good. Lord Morpheus reminds me of Matthew from Discovery of Witches.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/08/2022 10:27

Hi punky don't worry you didn't come across like that at all Grin

Mmmm, maybe I should, I felt a bit like I did towards the last few series of GOT - most of an episode with not much development of anything then a cool last 5 minutes. I've a good attention span and love being completely wrapped up in what I'm watching. I may go back to try 1 more episode ...

Equiphant · 11/08/2022 14:58

<nerd alert>

according to the discussion on Neil Gaiman’s tumblr, Jessamy is a Pied Crow which, despite the name, is a type of raven.

they are known as Sheild Ravens in German because of their white patch.

Equiphant · 11/08/2022 15:06

Only made it to ep 3 so far. As a huge fan of the comics i’m finding some of the changes offputting - why kill gregory? I want to see him playing with Goldie! Why cast a black woman as (white male) Lucien if it doesn’t change or add to the story? Why cast Jenna Coleman (aka The Most Annoying Doctor Who Assistant Ever) in anything, let alone as John Constantine, an incredibly cool character?
not sure if these things are as annoying if you haven’t read the comics.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/08/2022 16:26

I haven't read the comics so don't find the changes in the slightest bit annoying, except for Jenna Coleman and even then I didn't know the character was supposed to be cool, I thought she was cast because the character was supposed to be cocky and irritating.

Neil Gaiman was the show runner on this so all the changes have been made or approved by him. I guess he was improving his original story with the benefit of experience, which is different from someone else coming in and making changes that are outside of the author's vision.

TeddyBeans · 11/08/2022 16:36

I've watched up to episode 5 so far. That was grim. Feel like there could be more action, there's a lot of talking and not a lot of things happening. Really enjoying it so far though

Oh crikey if you feel the same as the last season of GOT I can see why you want to stop watching it!

A lot of people are saying that they loved the sound of her wings episode. I would say that was a turning point in the comics and they started to get really good after that one so maybe people who think the tv show isn't working for them will find it improves after that too???

I checked the Netflix top 10 earlier and it was top tv show in almost all countries in the world so I'll stop nagging people to watch it if they aren't liking it I think it's doing well enough 😝.

SaltaKatten · 06/08/2022 11:17

I'm a massive Sandman fan and am really enjoying it so far. I've been watching with my 17 year old DD who hasn't read the graphic novels. I've watched the first six episodes which is roughly the first book. The only episode I didn't enjoy so much was the diner episode. It all looks correct and the casting is excellent. I don't mind the changes in gender and race becay the characters are still themselves. In the horrid Terry pratchett watch adaptation, not only was the casting weird, but the characters were not true to the books on a deeper level. Here they got that right which is a huge relief!

I watched the diner episode last night. I found it very hard going, I guess in a good way (ie suspense, wondering what the hell is going to happen to these poor people). David Thewlis was really really good/ creepy.

My DP is a huge Sandman fan and he's liking it. I knew nothing about them and am enjoying enough to watch the lot but I'm not totally hooked. Yet?

bookworm14 · 12/08/2022 08:07

I’m a huge fan of the comics and I think they’ve done an incredible job with the adaptation. I previously didn’t think it was filmable but they’ve proved me wrong. There are obviously changes from the source material but none have felt inappropriate so far. Casting is mostly spot on, particularly Dream, Desire, Cain and Abel, and the gender-swapped Lucienne (and Stephen Fry as Gilbert - genius!).

Relaxalotl · 12/08/2022 08:18

I have really enjoyed it, having known nothing about the graphic novels. I did find that Dream looked disconcertingly like either Dylan Moran in Black Books or Noel Fielding (as his IT Crowd character as someone said further up).

Can someone who knows the graphic novels help me out? DH's birthday is coming up and he has said he's be interested in reading them having watched the show. What do I buy him? Amazon has various volumes including volume 0 upwards, a 30th anniversary edition of volume 1, sandman: Book One and a Deluxe Edition Book One. Which would be best for him?

bookworm14 · 12/08/2022 08:28

I’d get him volumes 1 and 2 (Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House) as this is what the tv series has covered so far. Not sure what the deluxe editions include that the normal editions don’t, but as it’s a birthday present you might as well splash out (unless on a budget)!

Punkypinky · 12/08/2022 08:32

Hi @Relaxalotl maybe start buying the 30th anniversary editions then if he likes them you can get the whole set the same (if you like that sort of thing like me 😊). The first book is preludes and nocturnes the second is the dolls house. This is what's covered in the Netflix seasons.

When I read them many moons ago I was only 15 /16 and had no money so I read them out of sequence as I could only read the ones I could find in the library. That worked fine for me as there are lots of side stories/ short stories.

The best ones in my opinion are brief lives, a game of you and worlds end but they come a bit later. 😊

Relaxalotl · 12/08/2022 09:59

Thank you @bookworm14 and @Punkypinky!It's been puzzling me which to get so this is a huge help.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/08/2022 11:35

DH & I finished it last night - really hope it's picked up for S2 - we loved it! Not read the books but loved Good Omens too.

mrwalkensir · 12/08/2022 20:20

Dream is the wonderful Phoebe Nicholl's son btw

baffledbunny · 12/08/2022 21:22

Loved it, am on my second watch now. I still have the graphic novels from the 90s somewhere. Dream country was my first, which got me into it, but I remember them all so fondly, Neil Gaiman had created such a rich world, with stories within stories within stories to get lost into, and the artwork was also amazing. Unfortunately I have forgotten most of them now! Might dig them out and refresh my memory again!

I really like Death's character a lot, I even wore a silver ankh necklace for a while in my 20s lol. I think Kirby Howell-Baptiste has done a great job of playing her (funny to find out she was Elena in killing eve!)

There were also a couple of standalone spin-off books on Death that were excellent too if anyone is looking for recommendations - "Death: the high cost of living", and "Death: The time of her life". I hope they bring them to the screen too sometime, with Kirby in the role.

Punkypinky · 12/08/2022 21:42

@baffledbunny yes the Death spin offs are great! At least as good as if not better than the sandman books in my opinion. I always thought if I got a tattoo it would be an ankh, I also wore one in my teens / 20s 😊.

Just watched the first half of the sound of her wings. That really stuck to the comic and I'm glad because that is such a good one.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/08/2022 00:07

A question for those who know the books, how many of them are there and how many potential series could there be from them?
