Elena Rybakina seems so unflappable. I wonder why she changed allegiance from Russia to Kazakhstan. I know her parents are from there. Maybe she had a premonition.

I'll be happy for whoever wins.

Not sure I've heard an umpire ask the crowd to settle down before. Grin

IceandIndigo · 07/07/2022 14:20

@JaneJeffer I believe it was because she didn’t get enough funding support from the Russian Federation, so Kazakhstan wooed her. Apparently there’s some big oil tycoon with lots of dosh who is trying to build up tennis there.

Similar to what happened to Norrie, who previously represented NZ but was struggling to get funding support there so switched allegiance when Britain came knocking. Some of the NZ media are talking about him as the one who got away.

JaneJeffer · 07/07/2022 14:25

Thanks @IceandIndigo makes sense. I said I know her parents are from there but after I posted I realised I don't actually know for sure Grin

AFAIK her parents are Russian.

JaneJeffer · 07/07/2022 14:31

I presume they must have some type of ex USSR citizenship deal with each other in those countries then.

What a return!

Loving the variation in this match.

IceandIndigo · 07/07/2022 14:36

I don’t know, but countries can adopt whatever citizenship rules they want, surely? Quite a few countries that will offer passports to “investors” etc, why not sportspeople.

JaneJeffer · 07/07/2022 14:38

Over here we give passports to anyone who ever looked at a map of Ireland @IceandIndigo Grin

Fantastic point!

Riverlee · 07/07/2022 15:13

Watching the doubles match with Iva/Pie (I’ve a pie!) and Zim/Bar. Lots of laughter. The court is 90% empty. If only we were all there.

ChessieFL · 07/07/2022 15:16

I do find it a bit baffling how a player can win a set quite convincingly and then just completely fall apart in the next.

Sounds like one of those book jokes that were popular in the 70's Riverlee

Oh that was so nice of Ons.

JaneJeffer · 07/07/2022 15:21

Well done Ons. I'm sad for Tajana but she's been great to watch and made me cry a lot!

OP posts:
IceandIndigo · 07/07/2022 15:22

Well done Ons! That hug at the net… I think I have something in my eye.

littlbrowndog · 07/07/2022 15:23

Great win ons

littlbrowndog · 07/07/2022 15:23

Mens doubles. Nail biter

JaneJeffer · 07/07/2022 15:24

Nice of Tajana's husband to stay and listen to Ons.

OP posts:
GrouchyKiwi · 07/07/2022 15:30

Well done, Ons! Sad for Maria, but she took the second set so that must feel good. The hug etc at the end made me cry, and Ons' words were so lovely.
